ELHAM VILLAGE HALL NEWS
The very successful Desert Island Discs series continued
with Pam Ferris as the castaway interviewed by Andrew
Joynes as Sue Lawley! Pam has some very varied musical
tastes and a packed audience enjoyed a lively interview
followed by a delicious finger buffet. What a lovely way to
spend a Thursday evening. (I will never view a period drama
again without thinking of how Pam describes them as ‘a bonnet
job’!)
The next castaway will be the intrepid Henry Shackleton,
interviewed by Pat Webb. This will take place on Thursday
20th December at 7.30pm in the Peggy Pike room. Why
not give the Christmas preparations a break and come and
enjoy an evening of anecdote and music?
The AGM of the Village Hall trustees will take place on
Thursday 29th November 7.30 for 8pm in the Peggy Pike
room. Come along and enjoy a glass of wine and hear all
the village hall news. Everyone welcome!
The wonderful Railway Swing Band will be performing their
Christmas concert for one night only on Wednesday 5th
December 7.30pm at the village hall. Come along and get
into the festive mood. There will be a pay bar and a raffle
at this event. Tickets are £10.00 from Jan Stanyon 01303

Term one has flown by and we have had a fantastic start to the academic year! The children have been learning
about all sorts of exciting topics from how light travels to the creation of the world. From learning about the
wonderful things Florence Nightingale did to playing Lacrosse … it’s all happening here at Elham Primary School!
We have of course enjoyed celebrating all the food we are lucky enough to be able to find so readily in our
supermarkets and in our shops locally. Our families gave generous gifts of food and everyday items that have
been sent to the Rainbow Centre to help those who are less fortunate than us.
News from Elham C of E Primary School
For regular updates check our website www.elhamprimary.co.uk
Earlier in the term we had Bishop Trevor, The bishop of
Dover, visit us for the afternoon. He took time to talk to
the children and went away very impressed with their
knowledge, behaviour and values that they demonstrated.
While he was here he unveiled a new mosaic that has
been created by Graham and Carolyn Ernest-Jones. As
you can see by the photograph, it really is beautiful –
please do pop down and see it close up and in full
colour. It is situated just outside the main entrance door
to the school.
A big thank you to Graham and Carolyn for
their time and wonderful gift to the school.
As 11th November approaches, the children are learning about the
Great War. Year 6 has been making ceramic poppies to go in our
memorial garden – a poppy has been made in memory of each
member of the Elham Community that died in both WW1 and WW2
so we could live freely. The school will be open on the morning of
Friday 9th November at 9.30am when you are welcome to come and
see all the learning that the children have been doing linked to this
topic and see the finished poppies in the garden.

Tickets are on sale (and going fast) for our next show of Glorious! - the true story of
Florence Foster Jenkins, the world’s worst opera singer. It was 1944, the world was
at war but Florence in New York was having the time of her life and making her
dreams come true. Her sell out concert at Carnegie Hall was one of life’s inexplainable mysteries. Her popularity
with people such as Tallulah Bankhead, Cole Porter and Caruso left people baffled. Somehow they saw in this
wonderful woman something other people did not. This enigmatic woman charmed her audiences; her warmth
and generosity won her true, loyal and devoted friends. She was an angel of inspiration. The fact that she couldn’t
sing in tune seemed to fade into insignificance; it was her spirit that sung out - her joie de vivre! There were some
that said she couldn’t sing but no one could say she didn’t sing! She was simply Glorious!
This wonderful show runs from Wednesday 14th to Saturday 17th November at 7.30pm on weekdays and at 3pm
on Saturday. Please note there is no evening show on the Saturday night. Tickets are £8 from Laing Bennett in
Lyminge. Please note you can book by phone (by ringing Laing Bennett) or online (by using our
website lymingedramaticsociety.co.uk ) as well as going into Laing Bennett in Lyminge.
We are also pleased to welcome two new members who will be performing for the first time for us in Glorious. If
you would like to join the society contact Sue on 01303 862837.
Our speaker for October was Gil Ryan ‘The Tea Man’, who gave a very interesting talk. He started by giving
us a brief history of tea which originally came from China. We heard how tea plants were smuggled out to
India and later Ceylon. Today most of our tea comes from Kenya and other African countries. Gil explained
how green tea leaves become black tea through various processes. Britain is the fourth largest tea drinking
nation in the world - the first being Pakistan. Before WW1 tea was very expensive but after the war tea was
globally manufactured therefore bringing down the price, hence we can all enjoy a cuppa!
Our next meeting is Thursday 8 November: Stained Glass with Eve Muggeridge 2.30pm St Mary’s Church Hall. (Items may be
available to purchase).
Lorri 840643
Our meeting in September was a talk given by John and Jane Buss on the Fabian Ware war
graves.
Born in 1869 Fabian Ware was self-educated. He obtained a degree and became a teacher, eventually establishing schools and
colleges in South Africa. He was instrumental in setting up proper graves, with names where possible, for relatives to
remember the dead of the First World War. He organised a mobile Red Cross ambulance unit which rescued casualties and
took names and positions of the fallen. The Army eventually became involved and an office was set up to record and
photograph graves for the families. A Royal Charter was set up in 1917 to establish the War Graves Commission and to plan
the setting-up of cemeteries in France. Each grave was given a Portland stone headstone with a small garden which the
French government agreed to keep in perpetuity and which the War Graves Commission continue to look after.
The competition was won jointly by Connie Burren and Marion Hoare, with Pauline Hodder 2nd, Gladys Harris 3rd, and
Marilyn Norton and Diana Bennet joint 4th.
On the 28th November Melanie Gibson-Barton will be giving a presentation on Bruges.
We meet at Rhodes Minnis Village Hall at 2.30pm, and visitors are always very welcome (first visit free). For further details
please contact 01303 862913
RHODES MINNIS CIRCLE
Janine Doulton is one of the Society’s favourites, an excellent judge, fine
artist, good gardener and an entertaining speaker. On 20 September she
gave us an extremely informative talk on plants which thrive in shade. Many
would say that there are few but Janine produced pictures of dozens of the most unlikely and desirable plants
which do flourish in light to medium shade.
On 6 October we held our Autumn Coffee Morning and bulb sale. Many turned up to enjoy a coffee break, enjoy
the cakes, buy bulbs and delight in the beautiful selection of plants for sale by the Fifth Trust.
Two very handsome planters are now in place in the Market Square, ready to be planted with spring bulbs to be
donated by the Society. We look forward to a blaze of colour next spring.
The speaker on 15 November will be Barry Newman, who will talk about a year in the allotment.
An important date for the diary is 13 December, the AGM and Christmas party.

MOBILE TELECOMS
I am pleased to report that a fairly large
project team has now been formed and that its
first meeting will have taken place before you read this
newsletter article. I am hoping to get both help and new
ideas from the members of that project team.
Damian Collins MP continues to be supportive in helping to
get some leverage with the mobile network operators and I
think that significant progress has been achieved. EE,
Telefonica (O2) and Vodafone have all reassessed the
coverage in Elham and have agreed that the coverage is not
good. All three companies are now working up solutions to
address the problem. Telefonica and Vodafone have a
technology-sharing agreement and so they will have one
solution together. None of the companies are willing to
share the details of their proposals with us at this stage, as
these are commercially sensitive.
I think that we can safely say that the first hurdle has been
crossed in getting the mobile network operators to agree
that a problem exists. The second hurdle will be to get
some worked-up solutions on the table and a third may be
negotiations around the positioning, details and impact of
any proposed solutions, in particular bearing in mind the
landscape quality in our Area of Outstanding Natural
Beauty.
One step at a time, but we are definitely out of the starting
blocks!

Elham lived up to its reputation as a friendly
village when it welcomed new residents at
events organised by the Elham Residents’
Association (ERA) in September.
Afternoon tea in St Mary’s Church Hall attracted 14
newcomers of all ages, from young families to more mature
folk. There to meet them were representatives from ERA
and many village organisations, from the Gardening Society
to the Church and Farmers’ Market. Over tea, coffee and
cakes, including a beautiful one offered by the Cosy
Tearoom, the conversation flowed and newcomers were
able to find out all about their village.
ERA also organised an evening village walk and Meet the
Publicans. Our splendid summer weather failed and heavy
rain deterred walkers from venturing out, but six
newcomers attended the Rose & Crown to meet ERA and
villagers and find out more about what Elham has to offer.
ERA is already planning next year’s events, which may
include a Spring village walk and Autumn pub get-together.
Sylvia Scott and her ERA project group would like to thank
all village group leaders for their involvement and warm
welcome to newcomers.

County Councillor’s report Elham November 2018
Thank you to everyone who turned out for the annual
‘streamclean’ of the Nailbourne on 22 September. As well as
my District Council colleague David Godfrey there was a good
turnout from Elham Parish Council, those who border the
Nailbourne and public spirited villagers from further afield. We
ranged in age from 5 to 75 and a few hours’ work cleared the
stretch behind Hog Green so that the water can move freely
and is now less likely to flood with the winter rains.
You have until 21 November to make your views known about Kent County Council’s budget for 2019/20. I’ve had a hand in
putting together the information on the website for this consultation and I hope we’ve made the budget choices clear. Many
people see their council tax bill as a payment for services received such as the road network and waste disposal. This is only
a very small part of what your council tax covers. Well over half of KCC’s expenditure is on social care – this covers
protection of children from harm and neglect, fostering and adoption, care of the elderly who cannot meet their own care
costs (in their own home or a residential or nursing home), services for those with mental or physical disabilities and lifelong
care for those with Learning Disabilities.
So far we’ve made most of our savings where it doesn’t show in efficiencies, streamlining services and making more use of
technology. We have not closed a single one of our 99 libraries and still have a mobile library service, an archive centre and a
growing e-book service. We offer subsidised bus travel for schoolchildren (this is over and above our legal responsibility),
have a community warden scheme, country parks and support sport and the arts – all discretionary services. In all we have
over 300 services both statutory and discretionary many of which you won’t notice until you need them.
We are in a better financial position than many other councils with social care responsibilities but even with a council tax
rise of 5% (that’s 3% for inflation and an extra 2% to meet extra social care demand) we will need to make savings. The
consultation asks you to say what your priorities are to help us shape a budget that has support from Kent residents. Go to
www.kent.gov.uk and look for ‘budget’ or you can use one of our libraries or contact me.
There’s also a consultation under way from Highways England about the Government’s plans for a Lower Thames Crossing.
This is important for us as it should relieve pressure on the Dartford crossing, M25 and M20 and allow HGV traffic to have a
much more direct route to the Midlands and the North from the Channel Ports. The preferred route was announced in
April and this latest round of consultation takes on board some of the feedback received since then. Go to
lowerthamescrossing.co.uk/haveyoursay for more information and the response form. You have until midnight on 20
December to respond.
Susan Carey, Member Elham Valley, Kent County Council
Volunteers taking part in the ‘streamclean’
As you can see from our Newsletter contributions, we are keeping busy.
Massive steps have been made in progressing an improved mobile phone signal, new residents have been
welcomed in style and, in partnership with the Gardening Society and Parish Council, the churchyard is being
maintained.
We are now starting to identify those assets that have value to the community with a view to registering them.
Whilst we would have no right to buy, we would have the right to bid, in the event of them closing and being put
up for sale.
Our village shop is one such asset. We now have a project group looking at how we can better support the shop
to ensure that those who need it continue to get the service they rely on.
Our next meeting is scheduled for 20th November; details to follow. If you are passionate about improving our
village and Parish, for the benefit of all who live there, then please join us.

It is with great sadness to announce the sad passing of Brian Cottingham. My father moved us to North Elham in
1980. Elham became very much a part of his life especially after losing his beloved wife Anne.
Brian became involved with the footpath gang along with his best mate 'Max' the German Shepherd usually
sitting watching men work in the back of Dad’s Land Rover. A big thank you to those who visited or enquired
after my father.

Any future? Take a bet!
A loving person with empty lap
Still grieving ‘Zimbah’, sees Puss-cat
They fall in love, so share a home

CHURCH MATTERS
Dear Friends
Autumn has traditionally been a time when Christians explore the big questions about life and death. Watching the
leaves fall and the nights draw in is an opportunity for all ages to think about love and loss and remember in special
ways.
For many this will involve being at events to mark Armistice Day, which this year is also Remembrance Sunday on
11 November. Whether this is a service at our memorial led by Rev’d Weeks and Rev’d Hancock or a large event
in the cathedral, many of those who come will be ‘returning’ to church.
Many more will have attended ‘remembering’ services around All Souls Day, like our Elham Valley Group Evensong
and Remembrance of Loved Ones Departed service on 4 November, taking time to think of those they grieve in a
more personal way.
Of course, before this we have Hallowe’en and all that entails these days. Some parents aren’t sure quite what to
feel about Hallowe’en - is it just harmless fun, or are there aspects of it that don’t fit in with how we want to see
the world? A child's christening service is very honest about the reality of good and evil, and Hallowe’en can be a
good time to talk about those things and how the love of Jesus can be a ‘light in the darkness’ for everyone.
The word ‘hallowe’en’ actually means ‘the eve of all hallows’ day’ - in other words, the night before the church’s
festival celebrating All Saints. A Saint is sometimes thought to be an exceptionally holy person - someone really
special, who did extraordinary things because of their faith in God. The famous saints are all amazing examples of
what it’s like to live God’s way. But in the Bible, St Paul calls all Christians saints – a saint is simply a friend of God,
who seeks to live their life according to God’s purposes. When someone is christened, they truly become a Saint,
so All Saints’ Day is a celebration of the whole family of God, when we remember those Christians and those of
other faiths who have died, who we don’t know personally.
Research around Life Events showed that attending these All Souls services is valued by families as part of their
connection with church and can be another step on the journey of faith. For bereaved families, the reflective space
can be hugely helpful, whether they have recently attended a funeral service, or whether they are remembering
someone who shaped their life many years previously.
To quote Charles Wesley – ‘One family, we dwell in him, one Church, above, beneath; though now divided by the
stream, the narrow stream of death.’
