City Songs & the Great American Songbook (1900 - 1950) by M. Lasser
Michael Lasser will describe his coming of age in Broadway theaters and jazz clubs around Manhattan in the 1950s. He gives one man's take on the music he has lived with for more than half a century. First, he’ll explore the ways in which songs portrayed Broadway and Harlem. He’ll follow with a chronological look at how the urban sen-sibility evolved in the early decades of the century, followed by the Twenties, the Great Depression, and World War II.
Michael Lasser, a former teacher and theater critic, is host of the syndicated public-radio show Facinatin' Rhythm (winner of the Peabody Award) and the
author of two previous books.
Autographed copies of his book will be available at the conclusion of the pro-gram, cost $35.00.
Sunday, November 17th 2:00 p.m. Greece Museum
The Prohibition Era in Greece by Maureen Whalen
Join us on Sunday, November 17th at 2:00 p.m. at our museum center for a presenta-tion by Maureen Whalen on the Prohibition Era in Greece. The program is based on the museum’s newest exhibit, Rumrunners, Speakeasies, and Bathtub Gin. What a col-orful time in our history. Latta Road was condemned as “the highway to hell,” the most dangerous gang of rumrunners in Western New York lived in Greece, and police and Coast Guard pursuits often ended with bullets flying.
Maureen spent eight months researching the events and personali-ties of the time and curated the exhibit with the help of Joe Vitello, Alan Mueller, Wally Rust, Fred Stock, Bill Sauers, and Arnie Ammer-ing. A special thanks goes to The Signery for making and donating our title signs and curbside sign.

"President's Message"
October was another busy month for the Greece Historical Society. Several mundane house-
hold projects were completed, such as cleaning gutters and furnace maintenance. We signed a
contract to replace the windows in the museum gift shop and another contract to rebuild our
back exit deck, although that project might not be completed until next spring. Our October
program at the library was well received and we all learned a lot about the history of wineries in
this area.
Our 50th Anniversary Celebration dinner was October 26th. We would especially like to thank
our sponsors (see page 4).
We have just received word from the Landmark Society of Western New York that we will be receiving two awards
at their annual awards ceremony on Sunday, November 17th at 3:00 p.m. at Rochester City Hall. A Special Citation
Award for 50 years as preservation advocate in the Town of Greece and another citation for sponsoring the recently
completed Historic Resources Survey of the Architecture of James H. Johnson.
All are welcome to attend the Landmark Society Awards Ceremony.
Don't forget our Holiday Craft & Collectibles Show on November 23rd.
Bill Sauers, President

“Museum Shop”
Our Museum Shop has received a gift of several historical books from the Landmark Society of Western New York, including books about the Erie Canal, waterfalls of the Adirondacks and Catskills, and the Finger Lakes. Are you into hiking? We have books on that too. All of these books are offered at a very reasonable price. Stop in and check out these historical books. There is so much
to learn about New York State. We also have books about beginning your genealogy search. I just learned something interesting about my family!
Mark your calendar for November 23rd, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m. to shop our annual craft sale.
We are here Sundays 1:30-4:00 pm. and look forward to your visit.
