PARISH SACRIFICIAL GIVING

We sincerely thank everyone for their generosity and support.

For the new fiscal year beginning July 1, 2018, the weekly Sunday collection budget is $46,120

(based on 52 Sundays)

OCTOBER 2018 Sunday Collections Year-to-Date compared to Budget - Surplus / (Deficit) $ (77,696) Actual Fiscal Year-to-Date Average Sunday Collections (18 Sundays) $ 41,803

Did You Know? One of the most rewarding and beautiful minis-tries at Saints Peter and Paul is the Homebound Communion Ministry. Every week, rain or shine, a team of extraordinary ministers of communion from our parish take the Holy Eucharist to our parishioner’s homes. These parishioners may have trouble getting to weekly mass either on a temporary or permanent basis. If you or a loved one finds it difficult to get to mass either temporarily or on a regular basis due to health issues or disabilities, our Homebound Communion Ministry may be for you. As winter approaches, many of our elderly also may find it difficult to travel to mass. If any of these situations describe you or a loved one, please contact Deacon Joe or Paulette Shea for more information.

Did you know you could set up automatic donations? The enrollment and set up process is straightforward. Just visit the parish website main page at: www.sspeterandpaul.net and select online giving. When using a plain white or temporary envelope (like the one pictured below), please remember to include your envelope number on either your check or on the envelope. This will help us give you proper credit for your donation. Thank you for your continued support.

About Contributions…

The Diocese of Joliet is par cipa ng in #GivingTuesday! If you have yet to donate to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA), please mark your calendar for Tuesday, November 27th. The 2018 CMAA goal of $8.2 million is within reach — but we need the help of everyone in the diocese. Every gi , no ma er the size, is greatly appreciated and will help support 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the dio-cese, including ours. Remember, 70 percent of any amount we raise over our parish goal is returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for our parish. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged their gi to the 2018 CMAA, and for being a partner in caring to so many in our diocese. For more informa on about the CMAA before #GivingTuesday, please follow @DOJCMAA on Facebook, Twi er and Instagram or visit jolietdioceseappeal.org.

Give Fathers Baker, Thomas, Tomy, McGeean, and Nestor the greatest Christmas gift of all – your prayers!

Join the parish for a Holy Hour with Benediction

on the vigil of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe Tuesday, December 11th at 7:30PM

in the Holy Family Chapel (Ministry Center) to pray that God will give great graces to the priests of our parish.

Fr. Gerald Fitzgerald, Founder, Servants of the Paraclete, (1894-1969) proposed to the Bishops in the United States and to those beyond our country, that the most effective way to renew and strengthen priests was through the healing power, “the sunshine”, of our Lord in the Most Blessed Sacrament. He insisted on the importance of prayer and sacrifice for our priests, and that priests understand the tremendous grace and re-sponsibility entrusted to them by their ordination. Father Gerald’s message was simple and clear: Priests have been given a sublime and indispensable vocation. They need grace to fulfill their high calling. Grace comes from our Lord Jesus Christ. He is here on earth in His Eucharistic Presence. Go to Him. He will supply and fulfill your every need. Bring the whole family to pray and sign a Christmas card for our priests. Let’s fill the Chapel to show our priests that we support them!

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat…” ~Matthew 25:35 Harvest Sunday Food Drive took place Sunday, November 11th. Eighth grade students from the school and those in the Religious Education program worked with the RE staff at this great event. The students distributed flyers one week and the next week, volunteer parents took students out into the community to collect the food donations. We are proud of their service to others and thank them for all of their efforts in making this drive a success. All food col-lected was contributed to the West Suburban Community Pantry. Year after year, Saints Peter and Paul has been the largest contributor of food to the pantry. This year the parish collected in excess of 11,000 pounds of food.

HARVEST SUNDAY

THANK YOU to all who helped make Harvest Sunday a success. Whether you donated food or money, showed up to sort and pack, or carry boxes out to the truck, your ef-forts made a difference in the lives of the thousands of people in DuPage county served by the West Suburban Community Pantry. From families, small children, young adults, teens, long-time parishioners and everyone in-between, we worked to benefit those less fortunate. It’s amazing what can be accomplished when our parish com-munity comes together. The 118 Confirmation students in the RE program and parish school were instrumental in this effort, braving the rain and cold to place door hangers and collect donations from almost 7,000 homes. A special shout-out goes to the Confirmation II catechists and assistants, all those who volunteered to drive, parish school organizers, Cheri Obendorf who coordinated the drivers, and to Deacon Joe Verdico who coordinated the indoor volunteers.

Dr. Scott Hahn, internationally known theologian and author, explains the inestimable value of the Creed as a sure means of communicating the life-giving faith of the Apostles and as an indispensable source of unity for the Church. Dr. Hahn also brings to light how the Creed has served as a time-tested wellspring of meditation by which a believer can deepen his or her relationship with Christ, making it, in the words of St. Ambrose, “the treasure of our soul.” After listening to this talk, I can no longer merely recite the Creed, but feel compelled to pray it with heartfelt gratitude. Annette - Media, PA

Jam-packed with info, background, context & interesting quotes. He's right! Most of us take the Creed for granted, so it was great to get this fresh perspective and to realize anew how important it is. Paula - Coon Rapids, MN

This talk really encouraged me to ponder the richness of our Faith. I also discovered a great Marian truth that I will always be thankful for! Daniel - Vancouver, BC

Saint Vincent de Paul

The spiritual genius of St. Vincent lies in the success he had in marrying the two

great commandments of the law. The historian, Bremond, tells us: “It is not his love of mankind which led Vincent de Paul to sanctity, but it is rather that sanctity made him truly and efficaciously charitable. It is not the poor who gave him to God, but God who gave him to the poor.” The dynamism, the energy, the love which St. Vincent manifested to the poor did not come from any doctrinaire views on politics or sociology. The source of his energy and the clarity of his spiritual vision came from his contemplation of the words and actions of Jesus Christ in the pages of the Gospel and from his daily contact with Jesus Christ in the quietness of prayer. He became convinced that, once men and women are made new through their personal dedication to Jesus Christ, a new world will follow. (McCullen, Deep Down Things, p. 4688)

Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint

Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by

offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder,

Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need

of assistance? If so, call: 630-718-2127.

Today the universal Church celebrates the Solemnity of Christ the King. To celebrate Christ’s exaltation, the Gos-pel recounts the trial of Jesus before Pilate. Here, Jesus stands bound before the Roman procurator, having been brought to the praetorium by the Chief Priest and His own people, who seek His death. In selecting this Gospel for today’s Solemnity, the Church underscores the paradox of the cross as proclaimed by St. Paul: “For Jews demand signs and the Greeks look for wisdom, but we proclaim Christ cruci ied, a stumbling block for the Jews and an absurdity to the Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks alike, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.”1 In John’s Gospel, it is precisely when Jesus is raised up on the cross that He is raised up in glory. Christ reigns exultant while dying an ignominious death, hanging between two criminals. In today’s Gospel, it is not Jesus who is on trial, but Pilate, who represents the world and those things that the world treasures. Jesus is accused of challenging the authority of Caesar and inciting a revolution, but that is only a ruse to elicit Pilate’s condemna-tion. When Pilate asks them, “Should I crucify your king?” they respond, “We have no king but Caesar.” Pilate is able to induce the Jewish leaders and the crowd to denounce the awaited Messiah and admit that their only king is Caesar. The irony of the cross is that in lifting Jesus up, they have enabled Him to ful ill His mission: “Now is the time of judgment on this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And when I am lifted up from the earth, I will draw everyone to myself” (Jn12:31). The cross did not defeat Christ, but exalted Him. The Jewish leaders tell Pilate, “Were he not a criminal, we would certainly not have handed him over to you” (Jn 18:30). The Greek verb for “handed over” denotes betrayal, not justice. The same verb is used eight times previously in the Gospel to refer to Judas, but now it is the Jewish leaders, even the Chief Priest and the scholarly Pharisees and scribes, who betray Him. They are affronted that Pilate should question them or their motivation for condemning Jesus, and they hope that he will act quickly and not judge the matter for himself. Perceiving their ill intent, Pilate cynically tells the Jewish leaders to judge Jesus themselves, to which they retort, “We are not per-mitted to put anyone to death.” In bringing Jesus to Pilate, they are demanding that Jesus be put to death by cruci ixion, a punish-ment only the Romans could in lict. They want to discredit Jesus – He is no Prophet or Messiah, but a rebellious evildoer, struck down by God.2 Jesus tells Pilate, “My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my subjects would be ighting to save me from being handed over by the Jews.” St. Augustine explains that Jesus’ kingdom is in this world, but not of this world – that is, the Kingdom of God is here among us, yet its ful illment has not yet been fully accomplished. Ironically, the same noun used for “subjects” here by Jesus is used to describe the Temple guards who came and arrested Him in the garden. With Jesus, however, His kingdom does not consist of subjects (servants or guards), but friends.3 Jesus says that His kingdom does not belong here. The distinction Jesus makes is not only in the origin but in the nature of God’s Kingdom: “Eye has not seen, ear has not heard, nor has it so much as dawned on man, what God has in store for those who love Him” (1 Cor 2:9). “The reason I have come into the world is to testify to the truth.” Although Pilate recognizes that Jesus is no criminal, as he will announce later to the waiting crowd, his unwillingness to side with Christ is hinted at in his retort, “What is Truth?” As with the Jewish leaders, Truth is standing right before Pilate but he refuses to listen and believe. In trying to appease the Jewish leaders, while at the same time not wanting to decide against Jesus, Pilate tries to compromise and hopes that by having Jesus scourged, he can appease those who are calling for His death. When that fails, Pilate fully succumbs to evil by handing Jesus over to be cruci ied. In the end, it is not Jesus who is condemned, but Pilate and each of us when we choose the world over the kingdom of God. In the cross, Jesus is victorious. He has conquered the world. He has conquered sin and death. In His passion and death, Jesus shows us how we, too, can be victorious. This is the paradox of the cross – dying to self for the sake of others leads to victory, giving us great joy and peace now and in eternity – a stumbling block and an absurdity for those of the world, but for those with faith, who strive to follow Christ, it is the power and wisdom of God. And so, we join the universal Church in celebrating Christ our King, who was crushed for our iniquities, punished for our sins, who bore upon Himself the sins of us all, and was therefore allotted a portion among the great … “So that at Jesus’ name, every knee must bend, and every tongue proclaim, Jesus Christ is Lord”4 (Phil 2:10). 1See 1 Cor 1:23-24 2Raymond Brown, The Gospel of John, X-XXI, The Anchor Bible, Volume 28A, pp. 842-872 3See John 15:15 4Isaiah 53 and Philippians 2:10 5The language of the Gospels has at times, wrongly been used to justify anti-Semitism. Yet, as Pope St. John Paull II tells us, the Jews were no more responsible for the death of Christ than we are - it is our sins that condemned Him and for that we are all guilty. Still, He came to call sinners, not the just, so we have con idence in Him (Luke 5:30-32).
