Oak Grove Mission Statement
Our mission is to glorify God through worship, bring people to faithful
discipleship in Christ, equip them for ministry in the church and the
world, and grow in our love for one another through fellowship.
FROM YOUR PASTOR
As we approach Thanksgiving this month, I share with you some familiar words of Scripture. Psalm 100 says:
Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness;
Come before Him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God.
It is He who made us; and we are His; We are His people, the sheep of his pasture.
Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; Give thanks to Him and praise His name.
For the Lord is good and His love endures forever; His faithfulness continues through all generations.
We are all guilty of not giving God enough thanks. When we pray we usually have a long list of needs and wants that we present to God, yet we don’t take the time the thank Him for all the good things He has provided for us. Yet, this psalm is very clear that we need to offer our thanks and praise to God. God gave His life for us, that we might be saved from our sins and receive eternal life. God provides for our needs and He takes care of us every day. Because God is so good to us, we must pause to show Him the appreciation He deserves. We all have many things to be thankful for. It might be good health, a good job, loving family and friends, financial security, living in a free country. Etc. We all have different things to be thankful for; the list is different for each of us. But the truth is every one of us has something to be thankful for. And whatever it is, we must remember tat it is a gift from God. He deserves our thanks and praise. This month think about all the things you have to be thankful for. Spend some extra time in prayer just thanking God for what He has done for you. Read Psalm 100 ever and over again. Begin living with a grateful heart in response to God’s love and generosi-ty. God bless and I’ll see you in church!
Matthew
I will praise God’s name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.Psalm 69:29-31 Let us come before him with thanks-giving and extol him with music and song.Psalm 95:1-3 With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the LORD: “He is good; his love toward Israel endures forever.” And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid.Ezra 3:10-12 All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God.2 Corinthi-ans 4:14-16
Newsletter Notes
From around the Southern Province A “cowbell revival.” That is what Crooked Oak held a while back as host church of the Mount Ararat Regional Conference of Church also consist-ing of Grace, King, Mount Bethel, Willow Hill, and Mountain Laurel Fellowship. The church was packed for the more than two hours of preach-ing, praying, and singing (followed by a splendid potluck supper). Why call it a “cowbell revival”? Quite simple. The bell is rung to tell the one preaching it is time to step down from the podium to let the next preacher take over. Mount Bethel has been sprucing up in preparation for its 160th anni-versary on November 24. In just two weeks time, $5,000 was raised to refin-ish the sanctuary floor. And instead of being covered up by a wall-to-wall rug, the wood will shine forth with carpet runners in the aisles. Trinity continues celebrating its centennial year with neat historical nuggets. Clamber up the church tower, and you can find “Presented by C. A. Hege, July 1886” inscribed on the bell. It seems that Br. Hege made a gift of the bell to Trinity’s predecessor church, Centerville. But when Centerville was closed in 1912, the bell was not left behind but was carted to the new Trinity church, where it still peels out 126 years later. A sad note: on September 28, exactly one hundred years and five months after it was laid, the cornerstone was removed from the old Immanuel church and its contents were carefully deposited in the Moravian Ar-chives: names of Sunday school teachers and scholars, a Bible, Moravian hymnal, the church newspaper, and the local Journal-Sentinel papers with news about the Titanic’s sinking. The old Immanuel building is now an out-reach of Calvary Baptist Church. Immanuel congregation joined with New Eden on October 7, 2002, to form Immanuel New Eden (no hyphen now). After careful thought and discernment King’s joint board elected to dis-pose of the main structure on the Sisk property (adjacent to the parking lot and picnic shelter) by allowing the King Fire Department to conduct a con-trolled burn on November 3. A couple months ago Friedberg’s two ministers made bold (make that “rash”) promises if the congregation packed the church with 525 worshipers on “Back to Church Sunday,” September 23. So the congregation turned out: 528. (Newsletter comment: “Would love to see that many here every Sun-day!” Amen!) And good as their word, Br. Jim Newsome had his head shaved in public that day. And Br. Tom Shelton indeed rode the “Intimidator” mega-coater at Carowinds. And the luncheon that day raised $8,500. Now Friedberg is launching yet another project: an elevator. The aim is to raise or borrow $200,000 and in 4-5 months construct the elevator shaft (the elevator itself has already been ordered), add restrooms, and build a canopy by the educational building. (We’ve been there during a downpour, so we cheer the last item. Might even have to contribute to avoid another soaking.)

Youth Fellowship Group
continues to meet on Wednesday evenings from
6:30-7:30p.m. We have spent an evening talking
in the kitchen over hot chocolate, most evenings
we have enlightening conversations about God’s
love, His expectations of us, Heaven, how it all
applies to our daily lives and such. Sometimes
the teachings are formal and other times we go
with whatever the Lord places upon our hearts.
It is always a blessing...one that we would like to
share with even more young people. If you
have not been joining us, please come fellow-
ship with us soon and bring your friends!
All are welcome!
May God bless each young person and work in every heart in this delightful ministry!
Hebrews 10:25
Let us not neglect our church meetings,
as some people do, but encourage and
warn each other, especially now that the
day of his coming back again is drawing
near.

NOVEMBER 2012
“As Thanksgiving Day approaches,
take time to think about your reasons
for being thankful. How deep are
they?”
Thanksgiving is a special day for us all to take time to
thank our loving Creator for all that makes life worth living
on God’s earth. We can thank God for salvation through
Christ. Thank God for loving families, for caring friends, for
opportunities to learn, labor, and serve in this free land.
Thank God for our churches and this wonderful land we call
home. Oh, how blessed we are living in this endowed and
hallowed land! We are privileged to not only enjoy the innu-
merable benefits of our country, but we Christians are also
given the opportunity to work on behalf of God’s kingdom.
However wonderful our nation is, there are still great needs
among us. Consider those millions who do not yet know
Christ and the glorious salvation he offers. Think of the poor
among us. Consider the slums in our teeming cities. Our
work is cut out for us!
Thanksgiving should not only be a time of giving grati-
tude to God, but also a time of remembrance of those who
need to be redeemed. The Danish novelist, Anker Larsen,
decided to take God and God’s work seriously. He looked
around him and seeing the vast needs of those in spiritual
trouble, Larsen vowed to report to God daily with the words:
“What orders do you have for me today?” Truly thankful
Christians are those who use whatever gifts and talents they
have in the service of God.
Prayer: You but open your hand towards us, O God, and all
our needs are met. Give us grateful hearts and show us
where and when we are to serve in the name of Christ.
Amen
