    Meet the Deadlines.Make an Impact.

    By Nicole Lawrence, Rider University

With the upcoming national studentcompetitions deadline on December 11th, every member of the National Broadcasting Society has the opportunity to make an impact. Youhave the opportunity to set yourself apartand show your creativity. As many of the key note speakers at the Region One Conventionstated: You are the only one who can make your dreams come true. Others can help you, but you are the one who determines your ownfuture. Whether you want to be a scriptwriter,a producer, an editor, or anything else, what you do now is what will affect if that dreamcomes true. How great would it feel to win anational award for your work. Well, that canonly happen if you take the initiative and meetthe deadline. Get ready. Get set. And enjoy Dallas.

Elsewhere in this issue of Signals Online youll read a very important article written by Ron Means.

Rons NBS roots run deep hes a formerNBS National Of cer, a vital force in RegionTwo activities, and respected Chapter Advisorat Freed-Hardeman University. Might I add

that hes also the recipient of the Uray Award, the highest honor bestowed by NBS?

So whats the big deal??My purpose in calling Rons article to

your attention is to offer him full back-up and presidential support for one of themost important initiatives NBS has everundertaken: the First Fund campaign.I wont take time here to explain why thecampaign is vitally important to our future ordiscuss how it will work (you can read Ronsarticle for that info). Rather, Ill use my spacethis issue to explain why its crucial to thehealth of your chapter to actively involve every member.

It just so happens that the First Fundcampaign is the very best way I can think of

for helping to make that happen.First Fund is all about 100 percent

participation. Yep, the whole enchilada. Onehundred percent participation by chaptersnationwide. And 100% participation of eachchapters membership. Thats right: the

goal is to get every member of every chapterinvolved in some way in making the FirstFund campaign 100% successful.

You may think its just another chapterfundraiser. But I want you to think of it assomething much more than that. I want you to set your sights on the target: 100%membership participation. Theres never beena better time for a better reason to make every member in your chapter an active fundraisingparticipant.

CHAPTER OFFICERS, I challenge you and your chapter leaders to embrace First Fundin our effort to actively engage every chaptermembers help and support. Brainstorm your very best fundraiser ideas you know:the ones that give everybody in the chapter areason to participate. Your chapters objectiveis to reach out and ask every member todedicate himself or herself to the cause.

Cause its about our future. The future of NBS. The future of electronic media . . . since1943!

Hello, my name is Ron Means, Advisor forFreed-Hardeman Universitys NBS-AERhoChapter in Henderson, Tennessee. I am very excited, and honored, to be the Chairperson of a new committee and fundraising effort by theNational Broadcasting Society-Alpha EpsilonRho. The First Fund Campaign is a new

initiative by the organization designed to raisefunds for NBS-AERhos continuing mission inproviding a number of unique opportunitiesfor both Electronic Media Students and MediaProfessionals alike.

The campaign has three immediate goals:First, 100% National Leadership Participation:every national of cer and member of theNational Advisory Council makes a donationto the First Fund Campaign. Second, 100%Local Chapter Participation: every NBS- AERho chapter makes a contribution to theFirst Fund Campaign. Third, 100% MemberParticipation: every NBS-AERho Memberparticipates in the First Fund Campaign. Now, allow me to explain just how simple anobjective this is for each chapter/member toaccomplish! For example: Your local NBS- AERho chapter holds a fundraising eventfor the First Fund Campaign that involvesa cookout. You cook and serve hamburgers

and hotdogs somewhere on campus, or in thecommunity, to raise funds. Each one of yourchapter members buys a hot dog or a drink and supports the eventthat is equal to 100%membership participation from within yourchapter to the First Fund Campaign! Now, your local chapter, and all of your NBS-AERhoChapter Members have participated andcontributed to the First Fund Campaign!

Totally doable right? I thought youd agreethat this is too easy. This is only one exampleof how your chapter and all of your memberscan support the First Fund Campaign.

I am pleased to announce that we havealready reached our goal of 100% participationfrom our National Executive Board andNational Advisory Council Members. Each oneof these NEB/NAC members has committedto making a personal nancial contribution tothe NBS-AERho First Fund Campaign. Mostof the contribution checks have already arrivedat the National Of ce and more are coming ineach week. This shows the commitment ournational leadership has to this new initiativefor NBS-AERho.

I am pleased to be working on the First Fund

Campaign with the assistance of Ray Eaton, Ajit Daniel and David Guerra. Please discussthe First Fund Campaign with your localchapter members at your next meeting andimmediately begin planning how your chapter, and each one of your members, can do yourpart to support this nation-wide campaign. If you would like to further discuss the goals of the campaign, or some ideas for involvement, please do not hesitate to contact any of us. Iam especially interested in hearing back from you on what your local chapter will do toparticipate in First Fund!

Ron Means is the Chairperson for the First Fund Campaign and is the advisor for the Freed-Hardeson Chapter of NBS-AERho. Hecan be reached [email protected].

The 2009 Fall semester is starting to winddown. You know what that means? Its time tostart studying! Although, however important

nals are its also important not to forgetabout the NBS deadlines that are coming up.

Convention grants from the NationalConvention are due December 11. For all theNBS chapters that have been fundraising, this

grant is great because it provides a breath of fresh air. How nice will it be to send someoneto Dallas for free?! Also coming up, theEarlybird Convention registration is dueDecember 11. Members who submit theirearlybird registration will be able to save $50on the overall cost.

December 11 is a busy day! Not only is itthe deadline for Earlybird registration, but the Student Competition Submissionsare also due. The plethora of categories can be found on NBSs Website, under StudentRecognition. There are over 30 different

categories for each chapter to go through andto submit something to!

I encourage everyone attending the NationalConvention to submit something. Becoming a

nalist or winning the Grand Prize is great for you, your resume, and your University.

This past weekend I attended Region 1sConference in Lancaster, PA. There wereabout 85 people there, and it was so muchfun. Millersville hosted this years conference bringing in a variety of panelist ranging from journalist all the way to lm freelancers. Thisgave the students the opportunity to build a broader understanding of the industry as a whole.

Having as much fun as I did at the RegionalConference really amps my excitement for

NBSs Nationals in Dallas, Texas. I cannot wait to see all of my new friends from otherchapters from both this years Regionals inMillersville and last years Nationals in NYC.Dallas, Texas home of the Dallas Cowboys will be opening up their arms to all NBS membersand Chapters this spring, and Im so excitedto see you all there!

Are you still on the rocks about goingto National Convention? Well heres yourdecision YES. Conventions like this are anopportunity that you cant just pass up,especially if you have made it this far to become an NBS member. Im sure everyonehas heard they should go, but why is the un-answered question. This trip to Dallas will be

my 4th convention so let me tell you about my un-forgettable experiences. Chicago, Illinois: I dont remembereverything about Chicago because it was my freshman year, and I was scared being in anew city, with new friends, but its this tripthat I owe my love of NBS to. During the mixeron the rst night is where I got to mingle withstudents at other colleges, many of whichstill talk to today. During the week away fromhome, I listened to so many speakers andattended a new session every hour. What wasgreat about the convention was that there wasa session during every block that interestedme, and another that interested other peopleas well. This was what I thought was a goodconvention, and it was, but they only got better.

Anaheim, California : Being that I amfrom the East Coast, turning down a trip toCalifornia was out of the question. Because

of this convention I was able to see a part of the USA that I didnt think I was ever goingto get to travel to. During the free time I wasable to see all the local beaches, and even walk down the streets of Hollywood. Now this was enough to keep me occupied, butthe real reason I was there was to experiencethe large media market. This trip was thesame as the previous convention in that Igot to talk to professionals, however I took

advantage of the opportunities. I was able to bring copies of my resume to the sessions, andin fact had them critique it. However whatI remember the most about this convention was Career Focus, the round-table discussions with professionals. There was a room lled with tables, and you only had 15 minutes topry all the information out of these uniqueindividuals. I felt pressured, like I was ona mini-interview. Being put in these smallgroups had such an impact on my personality skills, that it forced me to open out of my shell. I then became an outgoing person, inthe perfect city for such the person.

New York City, New York: Since this wasthe most recent convention I remember themost here. This was a short travel for me, and

I had been to the city many times, but this wasthe city to be in during convention week. My love is news, so right off the bat I knew it wasgoing to be a great convention. Our openingspeaker was Maggie Rodriguez, a CBS Anchor.Hearing her talk about her wisdom in the eld,and her love for it still inspired me to work harder than I had. During the week in NY Itook my inspiration and worked it into thesessions. I asked questions whenever possible, and volunteered my services wheneverneeded. However my absolute favorite part was being able to take a tour of local studios inthe area. Most of the Kutztown Students wentto see the Mike and Juliet show, and seeingthis in action was just so exciting.

During these weeks you bond with NBSmembers all over the country, and you beginto love what you do even more. The fact that we are given the opportunity to submit our work, and get critiqued is extremely helpful

when trying to better ourselves. If my storiesstill havent worked in swaying your decision, then just trust me, come to Dallas with meand many other NBS members and see for yourself. I promise, you wont regret it.

When I found out just a little over a yearago Millersville was hosting the Region 1Conference a urry of emotions came over me.I was excited, nervous and scared all at thesame time. My rst instinct was to step downas President and let someone else take overthe planning. After a little coaxing from my

friends, I made the decision to continue my roll and began planning for the conference. It began by spreading the excitement at theNational Conference in New York. At theRegional meeting, I handed out goodie bags with a bunch of pirate themed items to tour slogan, Map Out Your Future. AfterNationals, Dr. Chuk, the Region 1 advisor, andI emailed back and forth a few times and theplanning began. The MU exec board bookeda wonderful hotel in Lancaster City, had a few awesome speakers lined up and it seemed likeplanning was nally underway.

Fast forward to July 2009, I received aphone call from MUs advisor, Dr. Dorman. He said the hotel had been shut down dueto re code violations. That same week, Ireceived numerous emails from the speakersI had lined up saying they were no longeravailable to attend. I went into panic mode and began talking to everyone I knew about thesituation to see if we could begin making otherarrangements. Luckily, one of our alum workedat another nearby hotel and potential speakers began responding back.

The conference planning was in full swingand I was beginning to get more and moreexcited with each email I received from ouralum and professionals in the eld. Then the best surprise of all cameMark, our facilitiesdirector and engineer, told me he was able

to arrange for the 193rd Special Operations Wing to y into the Lancaster airport. It is the Air Forces special broadcasting plane, and if I do say so myself, it was AMAZING! In thepast two months, most of my attention wasfocused on planning the regional conferenceand I could not wait for it to come. Finally, theday had arrived at on Friday, November 6th at7pm MU NBS kicked off the conference. Ourkeynote speaker, Nicole Brewer of CBS 3, was wonderful and our mixer afterwards was agreat success.

Saturday started off with professionalpanels covering various media outlets.Presentations were done on lm, televisionand radio. Sony brought three HD camerasand showed students how to work the while

Adobe came and did a demonstration on CS4.In the afternoon the conference moved to theLancaster County Airport. I wasnt really sure what to expect when we arrived at the airport, but once we pulled up and saw the plane, I was blown away. It was de nitely a once in alifetime experience and I was very happy tohave that opportunity. After the airport, weheaded back to the hotel to end the conference with the awards ceremony. Everything went better than I could have every imagined andit was so great to meet so many wonderful, motivated people. While there was a lot of work and stress

involved, it was well worth it. Its good to know how much work actually goes into these eventsand I am much more appreciative of those whoplan them. I will be graduating in Decemberand am very excited to step out into the real world. I feel prepared and ready and I owe agreat deal of my success in college to NBS. Iencourage everyone to attend Regional andNational Conventions; the people you will meetand the memories you will make are far greaterthan the nancial expenses.

The 2009 Region One Conference is now history. Many thanks to everyone whocontributed to its success. At the top of thatlist, of course, would be the MillersvilleUniversity chapter, who, under the guidanceof their advisor, Dr. Bill Dorman, and led by Katie Magliochetti, did a fantastic job of planning and running the convention ontheir beautiful campus.

Thanks are also due to the advisors andchapters who coordinated the competition judging: Prof. Chris Cavallaro of MonmouthUniversity (audio), Prof. Dennis Lebec of Mercyhurst College (academic papers andscripts), and Dr. Bill Dorman of MillersvilleUniversity (video). I am also indebted to theproduction crew at Millersville University, who produced the awards video.

Finally, thanks to all of the chapters whoparticipated by sending a delegation or, atleast, arranging for a proxy to representthem.

Exciting New Things atUNAUniversity of North Alabama

BUSY! BUSY! BUSY! We are of cially off and running and have already made asubstantial dent in our fall semester plans. UNA Homecoming was September 28-October 3 and

was a very busy week for all of our members. A whole day was spent planning and paintingour homecoming window which is a traditioncarried out by student organizations on ourcampus. Though it was time consuming, we were proud at the end of the day to put ourname on it!

This was our rst year to participate in theHomecoming Parade and it was de nitely asuccess. Thousands of spectators ooded thestreets of downtown Florence so it was somepositive publicity for not only our local chapter, but the national chapter as well. Now thatHomecoming has come and passed we arelooking forward to helping with the local UnitedCerebral Palsy Walk-A-Thon and Fun-Run atthe end of October. There is a lot of stuff goingon but our members still seem to be excitedand motivated so things are good here at TheUniversity of North Alabama.

They gave speeches on expectations theindustry has and opinions on their personalexperience as beginners in the media. We also were privileged to have sports anchors, JakeRiddell, and Jacob Albracht, from KFDA NewsChannel 10 in Amarillo, TX.They gave their insider on the sports section of the media and gave great tips on constructivecriticism.

With all these great things happening in our

chapter we also are excited to announce ournew advisor, Ryan Hazelwood. We are excitedfor initiation on the 29th of November as weformally welcome all of the new membersinto our chapter. With PASO just around thecorner this chapter has so much to stay busy with. Our commitment to NBS and the mediaindustry has grown into more than a career;it has grown into our passion to improve ourchapter. We are enthusiastic and cannot waitfor Regional Convention!

    New Faces atKutztownKutztown University

The start of the semester brought new faces into the major as well as into the roomof G29 where the National BroadcastingSociety meets. The executive board started totake initiative right away and went into theclassrooms of the new freshman to bring theirattention to the great opportunities outside of the classroom. They talked about conventions, tours, speakers, socials, and the friendships you make along the way. In the rst meetingeveryone introduced themselves. This got theold members to get to know the new membersand vice versa. During our second meeting, ourpresident, Lynda Weed, brought in browniesand rice crispy treats to keep the interest

in NBS strong. We made a great emphasison the regional convention at MillersvilleUniversity, the national convention at Dallas, and dues. The next meeting consisted of thesame information but a tour to NFL Films inNew Jersey was announced which sparked alot of interest. We are all very excited to getthe opportunity to tour such a big facility onNovember 13th.

Our biggest concern is to keep people

interested and coming back. Therefore, wehave planned many socials throughout thesemester. It started on October 1st, when wehad about twenty people show up to go outfor a late night snack at Applebees. This wasa great way to interact with the freshman andother new members. On October 16th was ournext social. The original plan was to go to a

ashlight corn maze but the weather permittedus to do this. Instead we had a movie night inG29. A group of us got together and watched amovie while drinking apple cider and gettingin the mood of the fall season. Other socialsthat we have planned so far this semester area Dairy Queen run on October 29th, bowlingnight on November 20th, and hopefully squeezing in a day to go laser tagging witheveryone before the semester comes to an end. Another great thing we brought to the

meetings to keep everyone interested is whenan executive board member goes out and buys a little gift and brings it to the meetings. We then put all the names of the people that

attended the meetings into a hat and theperson that gets their name pulled gets theprize. Although they can sometimes be cheesy it keeps people interested in the meetings. On October 23rd, we had induction. TheKutztown University chapter inducted 10 new inductees. We are very proud of this numberand take great pride in our new members. It was a great night lled with parents, ritual, and alumni. We had a speaker come from theReading Phillies baseball team, who also wasan alumni from Kutztown University.

This was a great way for us to get anotherlook at the major and what it has to offer us inthe later years. After the induction, everyonetook a trip out to a local restaurant called TCs. We all ate dinner afterwards to conclude a wonderful night that the inductees will neverforget.(Continued on page 15)

The biggest community service we areinvolved with is Trick-R-Treat night. Thisoccurs on Wednesday, October 28th this year. This is a night where we go down to the mainstreet of Kutztown and bring a camera andmonitor, of course. When the children walk by

they can see themselves on the monitor. Thechildren really enjoy this opportunity and it

shows because they never want to leave thelens of the camera. It is such a great way that we can combine what we learn in the classroomand have a great time giving back to thecommunity.

You think being a senior I would have been

too many socials throughout my four years of being a member in NBS. Unfortunately this isnot the case. Although I have attended every meeting and most of the conventions,

I never once contributed and went to a social with my fellow NBSers. This changed withthe rst social that the Kutztown University chapter threw this semester. We went to Applebees on October 1st at 8pm. I had suchan amazing time. I got to meet and chat withmany people I never talked to and especially got to meet the new members over a great latenight snack. This made me regret missing all

of the socials throughout my college career but I am so happy I nally came to my sensesand realized that socials are a great way tomake friends and to have a good time with thepeople that have the same interests as you. I would suggest attending socials to everyone.

The fact that I attended this one social andthe members of NBS showed me a great time,I have not missed a single social this semester, and I dont plan on it. The social events do nothave to be big or outrageous. The second socialI attended was just a movie night in the room we have meetings every Tuesday. Just hanging

out and eating some food, still made for a greatnight that I will never forget. This is a greatopportunity to keep people, such as myself, interested in the organizations they join!

The attendees from chapters in theupper Midwest were able to see and experiencefacilities in a mid-range market (the QuadCities of Illinois and Iowa). Students agreedthe access and interaction on the tours was animpressive experience.

After the tours, attendees participated ina Career Focus event that gave students anopportunity to interact with professionalsin groups of about ve. Students discussedprofessional goals and asked follow-upquestions to the morning and afternoon tours.

Natalie Linville-Mass, the president of Media Link was the featured speaker Friday night. Her career progress through TV news tohealth-care public relations eventually led tothe development of a full-service media agency which she runs. She suggested students stay at a job for at least 18 months while beginningto explore for a new position after a year. Ms.Linville-Mass encouraged young professionalsto stretch and grow in a position and then look

for new challenges. You also have to makecareer decisions along the way. Once youmake the decision, dont look back; if the job wasnt what you hoped, you can make coursecorrections down the road. She said it wasimportant to love your work and strive for asolid personal life.

Saturday was loaded with panelists whose

titles included news director, news reporter, program director, general manager, mediarelations director, production director, andowner. Some of the panelists were workingtheir way up the career ladder and several hadcome to the Midwest looking for a differentpace of life after working in New York City.

The luncheon speaker was Frank Sundram, the General Manager of WVIK, the public radiostation for the Quad Cities. Mr. Sundram alsostressed the importance of growing in yourcareer. His personal career took several turns

including living in New York City and Gallup,New Mexico. He suggested you have to have agame plan but not be afraid to go in a differentdirection if the right opportunity comes up.The luncheon concluded with the regionalawards ceremony.

Special thanks go to the conferencecoordinator Dan Clouse, advisor to the Western Illinois chapter, and regionalco-directors Mike McHugh and Ajit Daniel.

The Region 3 production competition is under way. This year, were trying something new, taking all the entries online. Since it seems thisInternet thing isnt going away, we might as welltake advantage of it. Entries were submitted via YouTube, will be judged via YouTube, and winners entries will be shown on YouTube. Assuming we dont clog the tubes of the Web, Ithink itll be pretty cool.

The Alabama chapters of NBS recently metin Birmingham, where NBC13 reporter ChrisPollone gave us great advice, that students needV and P, versatility and preparedness, to besuccessful in the eld of media. We then toured Vazda Studios, a big post-production house, and nally Fox6, where we got to see their new HD setup.
