NC State University is pleased to provideinstruction by The Lewis Institute. The organiza-tion is an association of independent trainersand consultants who bring to their clients awealth of hands-on experience in the subjectsthey teach. Since we believe our programs mustbe practical, rather than purely theoretical, those who teach project management arerequired to have actually managed projects.

In the 23 years since its founding, The LewisInstitute has trained over 30,000 individualsaround the world in project management andrelated topics. The Institute's High PerformanceProject Management™ program and the LewisMethod® have been under development for 20years, and the Technology of Thinking™ hastaken five years to develop. Together, theseapproaches form the most state-of-the-art pro-grams designed to help organizations succeedin managing projects.

To ensure that learners absorb behavioral skills, our instructors employ whole-brain and accelerated learning methods of instruction.

These are coupled with modeling of desiredbehaviors either on video or by the instructor,so that learners can see what acceptablebehavior looks like and reproduce it. Becauseeach individual has a different learning style, our approach ensures that regardless of style, the individual’s needs are addressed.

Dr. James P. Lewis has 15 years of industry experi-ence as an electrical engineer and project man-ager, focusing on the design and developmentof communication equipment. Widely recog-nized as one of the top writers on the subject,Jim has published ten books of his own and aneleventh with co-author Bob Wysocki. His LewisMethod® of managing projects has been adopt-ed by thousands of managers. Jim has a BS inElectrical Engineering and a Doctorate inPsychology, both from NC State University. TheLewis Institute is a registered education providerwith the Project Management Institute®.

Your Instructors Will Show YouHow You Can Make a Difference

The Six Sigma people say most organizationsrun at a “three sigma” level, meaning that 30cents of every sales dollar is lost due to scrap,re-work, and warranty costs. The same num-bers apply to projects. Numerous studieshave shown that we waste about 30 cents ofevery dollar spent on projects due to poorproject management. With projects costing in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, asmall investment in training and consultingcan reduce the waste dramatically and gain a payback in very short order. Good projectmanagement can significantly reduce thesewasted expenses!

Additionally, nearly 85% of software projectsget into trouble, with close to 30% being canceled. Estimates last year said that companies lost $128 billion on software projects that self-destructed.

The same is true of product developmentprojects. Alan Mulally, now CEO of BoeingCommercial Airplanes, estimated during the777 program (for which he was chief engineer)that 30% of the cost to develop an airplanewas re-work—meaning that one of everythree engineers on the team was spendingfull time re-doing what two other engineershad done wrong.

You will learn how to help your team perform better by:•Improving communication

•Reducing destructive conflict

•Enhancing problem solving

•Making better decisions

•Increasing strategic thinking and planning

•Constructing better implementation plans

•Fostering higher creativity and innovation

Team-Based Project ManagementDealing Effectively with the “People” Side of Projects

Why You Should AttendA committed and motivated project team can work miracles, but how do you create such a team?By applying the methods taught in this dynamic seminar, you can turn a project group into a winningproject team!

This course will help you learn to manage and lead,to influence and motivate, and to work with teammembers to get the best possible performance fromeach individual. If you have ever said, “I have no trou-ble solving the technical problems in my projects—it’s the people problems I have trouble with,” thenthis seminar may be just what you’re looking for. Thejob of the project manager is to integrate peoplewith different knowledge and skills into a functionalteam, so that each can make a specific contribution. Inshort, a project team needs a leader, not a manager.

A common problem for project managers is thatthey don’t “own” the people in their project team. For that reason, you must have very good peopleskills in order to have a successful project. You musthone your interpersonal skills so that you can exerciseinfluence, rather than power, to get things done. You'll return to work better equipped to bring outthe best in those individuals on your team.

Who Should AttendThis program will benefit project managers involved inengineering, data processing, information technology, construction, research and development, manufac-turing, maintenance, corporate planning, finance, marketing, and quality. The principles can be appliedto any kind of project. The course is especially valuablefor managers who are concerned with effectivelymanaging projects for which the cost, schedule, and performance must meet rigid requirements.

Proven steps for building the personal credibilityrequired for effective leadership

As a project manager, you are generally given a lot ofresponsibility with little actual authority. The ProjectLeadership Laboratory unveils a comprehensive program for developing the skills of a leader. You’lldiscover techniques for matching individuals' talentsto specific tasks, skills for delegating authority with-out losing control, physical approaches for quicklybuilding rapport with other people, tips for acquiringcredibility in an unfamiliar setting, and much more.

It has been said that the first step to understandingothers is to understand yourself. In this Laboratory, you will assess your own personality and dispositionas a leader using the following instruments:

Kiersey Temperament Sorter (similar to the Myers-Briggs)

 Thinking Styles Inventory

 Leadership Practices Inventory

 LEAD-Self Instrument

 Emotional Intelligence Instrument

These tools and techniques provide valuable data to help you optimize your approach to leadership, minimize your weaknesses, and understand followersat the same time. In addition, the Laboratory helpsyou learn by doing, engaging you in various skill-building exercises to make the theory relevant and practical back on the job.

Why You Should AttendSeldom do projects fail because people don’t knowhow to create a proper schedule or Work BreakdownStructure. They fail most often because infighting, conflict, hidden agendas, communication problems, and egos plague project teams. All of these problemscan be reduced or eliminated completely if people aregiven the proper tools for dealing effectively witheach other. This dynamic program will show you how.

Teams, like individuals, do not always demonstrate a“whole brain” preference for thinking. This means thatteams can also apply ineffective thinking to problemsthey must solve. By enabling teams to think in awhole-brain way, their performance can be greatlyimproved—with obvious bottom-line results. Bycombining individual thinking profiles with theteam profile, project leaders can take maximumadvantage of the strengths of each member andminimize any weaknesses that exist.

When The Lewis Method® is combined with TheTechnology of Thinking™ model, you have an extremelypowerful approach to capturing the strengths of yourteam to deliver project results on time, on budget, and at high performance! No other approach existsthat yields the benefits of this method.

You can help your team perform better by: Improving communication

 Reducing destructive conflict

 Enhancing problem solving

 Making better decisions

 Increasing strategic thinking and planning

 Constructing better implementation plans

 Fostering higher creativity and innovation

Attend and You’ll Learn How to Improve your own thinking and the thinking of

your team, using the “whole-brain walkaround”

Compensate for lack of preference for a particularmode of thinking in yourself and your team

Apply whole-brain thinking to develop a balancedscorecard for measuring project performance

Get a quick “reading” of another person’s preferredthinking in order to deal more effectively with himor her

Apply a whole-brain approach to managing aproject of any kind

Improve communication, planning, controlling, and other aspects of team performance

Who Should AttendThis seminar will benefit project managers whose jobs involve engineering, data processing, information technology, construction, research and development, manufacturing, maintenance, corporate planning, finance, marketing, and quality. The principles you’ll learn can be applied to anykind of project.

Attend and You’ll Receive Your own personal HBDI™ profile and report, which

shows your thinking preferences and describesgeneral characteristics of your personality basedon this profile. You will take the HBDI™ on-linebefore the program and receive feedback on yourown thinking preferences!

How the HBDI™ Will Help YouNed Herrmann, formerly a manager of training atGeneral Electric’s Crotonville Management TrainingFacility, spent 30+ years researching the HerrmannBrain Dominance Instrument (HBDI™). Over one mil-lion people have taken it, and the current databasecontains approximately 500,000 profiles. The statisti-cal validity of the instrument is excellent. In addition, the application of the model to everyday thinkingand thinking in organizations is completely in linewith the work of other experts on the technology ofthinking, including the following: Dr. HowardGardner, who has discovered that there are eightintelligences; Dr. Daniel Goleman, whose researchhas shown that there is a bottom-line correlation formanagers who have high emotional intelligence; Dr.Edward de Bono, perhaps the world’s leading guruof thinking; and Tony Buzan, originator of the MindMap®. We have incorporated the work of all of theseexperts into our program to deliver one of the mostunique sets of tools ever developed.
