Using Lattice Platform Manager and MuRata DC-DC Converters to Create Power Subsystems for Embedded Applications

Introduction

Increasing reliability and availability requirements of modern

embedded systems has put new demands on power subsystem designs.

For example, the traditional requirement for hot swap capabilities have now

grown to include advanced features like voltage scaling to save power and

improve reliability, complex fault detection and logging features to simplify

testing and field servicing. Advanced power system components, like the

Lattice Platform Manager and MuRata DC-DC converters can support the

growing need for advanced features in modern power subsystem designs.

This application note will use an example design, for the power

subsystem on a communications system monitor card, to describe the

key device selection and design considerations required for these types of

designs. Key features will include voltage scaling to save power during light

load conditions, increased supply accuracy to increase headroom needed

during high dI/dt loads, and fault logging to improve reliability and prevent

unanticipated down time.

Key components for the design will include the Lattice Platform

manager to sense and control the power subsystem, MuRata DC-DC

converters to source the power rails on the printed circuit board and Atmel

Serial Flash memory to store power fault information during data logging.

POWR1014A Breakout Board Evaluation Kit Lattice Breakout Board Evaluation Kits offer a convenient way to conduct hardware evaluations by providing easy hand-access to densely-spaced PLD I/Os. Because the center-to-center spacing of the package pins/balls of PLD modern packages can be 1.00 mm BSC (Basic Spacing between Spacing) or less, it can be very difficult to probe I/Os once a circuit board has been fabricated. The electrical traces of Lattice Breakout boards connect each I/O to header landings that have 100 mil (0.1 inch) centered holes. By adding test probes, jumper wires, or pin headers to the header landings, you can easily evaluate voltage monitors, high-voltage FET drivers, and open drain outputs of the POWR1014A.

Figure 1: Typical Digital Audio Playback Architectures

The introduction of digital audio playback technology has found a variety of applications where adding audio and/or voice playback to familiar

industrial and consumer devices has significantly improved user interfaces. It is now possible to easily adapt designs for different languages and geographic

regions or to include universal warning signals, tone based announcement indications, audio feedback for touch panels and other similar capabilities that

provide enhanced user experiences.

The availability of integrated digital audio processors, like the Conexant KX1400 now makes it easy to add audio playback capability to a variety of

designs. Using a companion MCU, like the STM8 from ST Microelectronics, audio subsystems can be created for a wide range of applications. The inclusion

of an MCU makes it possible to add significant control and ‘intelligence’ to the design further enhancing the user experience. See the adjacent side panel for

several examples.

Typical Architectures Digital audio playback applications with a central MCU for control have three typical architectures

depending on how the digital audio information is stored. Digital audio data can be stored external to the

audio processor using a serial flash memory with an SPI bus, digital data can be stored in the external

memory used by the MCU to store program and data, or the audio data can be stored within the MCU in a

memory shared with program control. Figure 1 below illustrates these main architecture options.

The first two options use an external Flash memory either accessed by the MCU or directly by the

audio processor. This provides a significant amount of storage space either for audio files (when the

memory is controlled by the audio processor) or program control (when the memory is coupled to the

MCU). These approaches can be expensive solutions, but can be a good alternative for applications like

industrial and automotive applications, where complex control processing is required and significant

memory space can be needed for digital audio files. The MCU internal memory architecture is used when

relatively simple control and smaller audio storage is required. In many applications a significant amount

of audio storage (up to several minutes) is possible when using MCU internal storage and this can cut

parts count and reduce cost significantly without sacrificing user control flexibility. Home appliances

and consumer applications are typical examples that can benefit from using the MCU internal memory

architecture.

Conexant KX1400 The KX1400 is an audio playback IC designed to play 8KHz audio data

directly to an external speaker via an on-chip digital audio processor and

class-D driver. Both 12-bit PCM and 4-bit IMA ADPCM data formats are

supported. It also has a built-in tone generator capable of generating tones

at 4096 different frequencies. The on-chip audio processor eliminates the

need for an external low-pass filter in most cases. The KX1400 utilizes low

power CMOS technology and provides a stand-by power-savings state,

making it well suited for battery powered applications.

The KX1400 operates in either a stand-alone mode or interfaced to

a microcontroller (MCU) host. Audio data is provided to the KX1400 from

either a user-programmed external serial memory or from the host MCU.

Under MCU control, the user can select phrases or tone sequences to play

from the external memory, play tone sequences via commands, or stream

audio data directly to the on-chip audio processor. In stand-alone mode no

MCU is required; on reset, the KX1400 plays a single phrase from external

memory and then returns to a stand-by power-saving state.

A block diagram of the KX1400 along with the external STM8 MCU is

shown in Figure 2. The MCU controls all operation of the KX1400 via the SPI

bus. A variety of commands are available to play tones, phrases, configure

outputs, set the volume level and mute or un-mute the speaker output all

directly via MCU control.

In this design the Class D amplifier included on the KX1400 further

reduces component count since an external device isn’t needed to amplify

the signal to drive an 8 Ohm or greater speaker directly. Additionally the

factory calibrated internal 8 MHz oscillator provides the precision time base

for audio functions without the need for any external components.

STMicroelectronics STM8 MCU ST Microelectronics offers a wider range of flexible, high-performance

and low-power MCUs appropriate for the widest range of embedded

control applications. The STM8 MCU family offers 8-bit processing with

a variety of key peripherals, internal flash memory and on-chip clocking

and power management blocks to keep device count low while providing

the utmost in flexibility and performance. The STM8 device family features

devices optimized for automotive (STM8A), and general purpose (STM8S)

applications. In our design the STM8S family is the best fit and the high

capacity memory (128KB Flash) offered by the STM8S207SB in a space

saving 44pin package is an excellent option.

The STM8S207SB has an SPI port that can be easily used to connect

to the KX1400 to control all audio operations. The SPI port provides full

duplex synchronous transfers or simplex synchronous transfer, master or

slave operation, up to a 10MHz transfer rate, programmable clock polarity

and phase, programmable data order, interrupt on transmit and receive

as well as faults and overrun, and a CRC function for improved reliability.

Table 1 below shows the SPI signals used to connect the STM8S207SB to

theKX1400.

The STM8S Family can operate in several low power modes and can

wake from a low power state in either a full or half duplex SPI transmit

mode that is useful for reducing power in these types of audio applications.

Overcome Signal Attenuation and Noise & Jitter Interference Challenges in USB 3.0 System DesignTo offset the signal quality degradation, Pericom offers a broad array of USB 3.0 ReDrivers for maintaining a high level of SI (Signal Integrity) during Tx and Rx of USB 3.0 high-speed signals.

The highly anticipated USB 3.0 is now seeing wide spread adoption in PC, Notebook, Server and Portable Devices. USB 3.0 delivers an unprecedented bandwidth, 10 times that of USB 2.0. USB 3.0 supports full-duplex communication, or the ability to send and receive data simultaneously. It also improves QoS (Quality of Service) thanks to advance data error checking, while saving power with the USB 3.0 link power management. Most importantly, it is 100% backward compatible with USB 2.0 devices. However, with all these added benefits, the high-speed differential signal of USB 3.0 also introduces uncontrollable noise, or signal attenuation, causing USB 3.0 signal voltage swing to overshoot or undershoot the “optimal eye opening”. This distorts the quality of USB 3.0 signal eye during high-speed signal switching. USB 3.0 signal quality is gravely impacted when

random or deterministic noise degrades the signal quality with crosstalk during transmitting and receiving of USB 3.0 packets between USB 3.0 hosts and peripheral devices.

Faced with complex PCB layout challenges, USB 3.0 system designers see significant benefits from Pericom USB 3.0 ReDrivers in transmitting and receiving reliable USB 3.0 signals with strong output swing, effective jitter removal, flexible transmit emphasis and receiver equalization. System designers don’t always have full control as to how USB 3.0 end-point devices, like external HDDs, digital cameras, handhelds, or tablets, are connected between host and end point. When the signal travels thru extensive traces, multi-layer vias, connectors before exiting to the USB 3.0 ports or cables, the transmit eye of USB 3.0 host or device may show significant degradation from

jitter, attenuation or insertion loss. As result, the USB 3.0 link may likely suffer greater BER and link recovery during USB 3.0 cable plug and un-plug processes. USB 3.0 system designers need to take greater measures to ensure strong SI during USB 3.0 Tx and Rx signal transmission. Pericom’s USB 3.0 ReDriver devices offer the exact Signal Conditioning Solutions to ensure that the USB 3.0 eye is fully optimized to maintain consistent level of SI when routing extensive long traces across connectors, vias and thru cables.

With Pericom’s USB 3.0 ReDrivers, system designers are given greater flexibility to design and route High-speed USB 3.0 signals in a challenging environments while maintaining consistent level of signal quality.

Mobile SDRAMs for High Performance with Low PowerOnly ISSI offers a complete portfolio of LPDDR memories, ideal for applications requiring low operating power and ultra low standby current. JEDEC standard 1.8V supply voltage interfaces with all popular MCUs.

Demand continues to grow for mobile consumer devices like GPS/navigation

systems, smart phones, digital cameras, and gaming units. This creates the requirement

for ever increasing processing capacity and with that the need for more dynamic

memory (DRAM) for fast access and processing of the multimedia content. At the same

time, mobile products are shrinking in size, with less space for batteries, necessitating

the use of LPDDR products. These meet the data bandwidth need but have much

lower operating and standby currents than traditional “PC” memory. The result is the

increasing use of higher density LPDDR devices in various form-factors including BGA

package, Package-on-Package (PoP) and Known Good Die (KGD).

Many Industrial and Medical applications also have adopted LPDDR products to

take advantage of the low voltage / low power features of LPDDRs. Virtually every new

MicroController (MCU) uses advanced process technology, limiting I/O voltage to 1.8V.

Rather than having to use DDR2 devices with much higher density than is needed and

with a substantially higher power consumption, engineers are turning to LPDDR devices

such as the popular 128Mb product from ISSI. The IS43LR32400F offers a sweet-spot in

terms of density and performance, but with lower power and reduced system cost than

equivalent DDR2 devices.

For applications such as Smart Grid equipment, Test & Measurement products, and

medical devices which require extended life time support, the LPDDR devices from ISSI

are the perfect solution to the designers memory needs.

LTC3618 - Dual 4MHz, ±3A Synchronous Buck Converter for DDR TerminationCapable of generating the supply voltage and the bus termination voltage for DDR/DDR2/DDR3 and future standard memory applications requiring both sourcing and sinking of current.

The LTC®3618 is a dual synchronous step-down regulator using a current mode, constant-frequency architecture. It provides a complete DDR solution with an input voltage range from 2.25V to 5.5V.

The output of the fi rst step-down regulator offers a high accuracy VDDQ supply. A buffered reference generates VTTR at 50% of VDDQIN and drives loads up to ±10mA. The second regulator generates the DDR termination voltage (VTT) equal to VTTR. Both regulators are capable of delivering ±3A of

load current at 1MHz switching frequency.

The operating frequency is externally programmable up to 4MHz, allowing the use of small surface mount inductors. 0°, 90°, or 180° of phase shift between the two channels can be selected to minimize input current ripple. For switching noise-sensitive applications, the LTC3618 can be synchronized to an external clock up to 4MHz. The LTC3618 is offered in leadless 24-pin 4mm × 4mm QFN and thermally enhanced 24-pin TSSOP packages.

LHV Industrial Power SuppliesHTK Series provides 300W-800W for wide variety of uses.

The HTK series power supplies consist of 4 power levels, 300W, 400W,

600W and 800W. The design of the HTK series mounts the heat sinks on the PCB;

because of this a chassis is not required to act as a heat sink for the unit. If space

is tight in your application then the open frame version may be your solution.

Since each application is unique, the HTK series is available in an open

frame, U-channel or enclosed versions. With standard output voltages available

from 3.3V to 54V the HTK series offers a standard off the shelf unit that will

fit most OEM applications. If more power is needed up to four units can be

connected in parallel to provide up to 3200W.

If a standard unit will not meet your power requirement, the HTK series can

be modified to provide you with what you need.
