Design Considerations for a Point of Sales Terminal using Single Board Computers and LCD Displays

Introduction

Many embedded applications require a complete set of system

features that can be easily addressed by using board level building blocks.

In particular, Single Board Computers (SBCs) have all of the hardware

required to implement a wide set of applications. In addition, the availability

of complete embedded Operating Systems (OS’s) and Real Time OS’s

(RTOS’s) provide a well understood programming environment that allows

the designer to focus on the key elements of the application. The underlying

hardware drivers, file systems, resource allocation functions and system

protocols need not be implemented by the designer, but simply used as

function calls from the higher level applications interface.

To better understand the high level design considerations when

using SBCs as system building blocks it is best to look at an example

design. By observing some of the major requirements, constraints and

trade-offs, during the architecture definition, component selection and

hardware/software integration process we will be able to identify common

design considerations that will apply during a wide range of SBC-based

implementations.

In this paper we will look in detail at the design requirements of a Point

of Sales (PoS) terminal, like that used in a small grocery or convenience

store. The terminal must be able to accurately scan items, determine prices

(perhaps based on weight), assist with inventory management, process

payment, and provide security and cashier oversight. Reliability will be a

key consideration along with power consumption and form factor. A detailed

list of requirements will be developed in the Application Description section

so that trade-off options can be highlighted in the Component Selection

section.

Key components for the design will include the SBC, peripheral boards,

LCD panel and power system. A variety of SBC and LCD vendors will be

considered in the product selection section, but a specific SBC and LCD

panel will be used for the software and hardware integration design

considerations section.

Display more content – and use less power – with Sharp Memory LCDsActive matrix technology and memory in every pixel enables small-display products with robust content and ultra-low energy consumption. Choose from a variety of sizes and specs for your compact handheld, wrist-top, and other small-screen designs.

Consumers continue to demand greater sophistication in

electronic products with small displays. Sharp's Memory LCD

technology delivers a high-contrast, high-resolution display that

allows for denser content than many types of same-sized LCDs

and eliminates many design issues inherent in yesterday's LCD

technology.

Memory LCDs feature embedded 1-bit memory in every pixel

to enable an "always on" display that uses little power, even when

updating images (only a single supply voltage is required). The

technology eliminates sweeping images and the displays’ response

time makes them fast enough to display video. A lightweight, two-

glass design, plus an integrated driver in the panel and 3-wire SPI

serial interface (SI, SCS, SCK) provides a thin module that's easily

integrated into compact handheld, wrist-top, and other small-screen

devices - essentially any product that uses a battery.

Sharp offers Memory LCDs in both Silver Metallic Polymer

Network Liquid Crystal Modules (PNLC) and Clear Monochrome HR-

TFT Modules (availability varies by size). Available sizes include 1.26-

RS-232/RS-485/RS-422 Transceiver with Internal TerminationInternally Switched Cable Termination EnablesRS-232 and RS-485/422 to Share Same Communication Lines

The SP338 and SP339 are advanced multiprotocol transceivers supporting RS-232 RS-485, and RS-422 serial standards in 40 pin QFN packages. Integrated cable termination and eight configuration modes (four modes for SP339) allow all three protocols to be used interchangeably over a single cable or connector with no additional switching components. Full operation requires only four external charge pump capacitors.

The RS-485/422 modes in the SP338 feature up to two drivers and four receivers (2TX/4RX) in half, full, and mixed duplex configurations. The RS-485/422 modes in the SP339 feature one driver and one receiver (1TX/1RX) in both half and full duplex configurations. The RS-232 mode (3TX/5RX) provides full support of all eight signals commonly used with the DB9 RS-232 connector. Both parts also feature a dedicated diagnostic loopback mode, and are pin compatible with each other.

The high speed drivers operate up to 20Mbps in RS-485/422 modes, and up to 1Mbps in RS-232 mode. All drivers can be slew limited to 250kbps in any mode to minimize electromagnetic interference (EMI).

All transmitter outputs and receiver inputs feature robust electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection to ±15kV Human Body Model (HBM) and ±8kV IEC-61000-4-2 Contact. Each receiver output has full fail-safe protection to avoid system lockup, oscillation, or indeterminate states by defaulting to logic-high output level when the inputs are open, shorted, or terminated but undriven. No external biasing resistors are required.

The RS-232 receiver inputs include a 5kΩ pull-down to ground. The RS-485/422 receiver inputs are high impedance (>96kΩ when termination is disabled), allowing up to 256 devices on a single communication bus (1/8th unit load).

The SP338 and SP339 operate from a single power supply, either 3.3V or 5V, with low idle current (2mA typical in all modes for the SP339). The shutdown mode consumes less than 10µA for low power standby operation.

FEATURES:

Pin selectable Cable Termination No external resistors required for RS-485/422 termination and biasing 3.3V or 5V Single Supply Operation Robust ESD Protection on bus pins ±15kV Human Body Model (HBM) ±8kV IEC 61000-4-2 (Contact) Max Data Rate of 20Mbps in RS-485/422 Modes and up to 1Mbps in RS-232 Modes Pin selectable 250kbps Slew Limiting 3TX/5RX RS-232/V.28 2TX/4RX RS-485/422 (SP338) 1TX/1RX RS-485/422 (SP339) Full, Half, and Mixed (SP338 only) Duplex Configurations 1/8th Unit Load, up to 256 receivers on bus RS-485/422 Enhanced Failsafe for open, shorted, or terminated but idle inputs Space saving 6mm x 6mm QFN-40 Package Pin compatible with each other

XL375 CC - 260 Watts without FansUltra Small, High Efficiency Power Supply with Convection Cooling Option Delivers 260 Watts Without Fans.

The new Convection Cooling Option for the XL375 family delivers 260 watts across all output voltages and eliminates the fans and fan controllers needed to cool conventional power supplies, saving cost and freeing up valuable component space. Doing away with fans and related components and circuitry is significant to designers tasked with increasing the reliability and decreasing the noise of products (fans may fail, and they generate most of the audible sound in contemporary designs).

OEMs can design in both convection-cooled and fan-cooled power supplies that use the same very compact, low profile 3.3” x 5” x 1.5” packaging, connectors and layout, saving time and cost. The very low profile packaging is ideally suited to 1U product designs and makes the system designer’s job much easier.

The Convection Cooling Option gives OEMs a distinct packaging and cost benefit while also reducing overall power consumption and cooling requirements for applications such as industrial automation, telecommunications, gaming systems, security and surveillance systems, and network servers. Our unique technology gives OEM engineers new flexibility in power system design that pays real competitive dividends in their final products.

All models also include Active Current Sharing to allow up to four supplies to be operated in parallel for high output applications. The Active OR-ing mosfet board option is available for N+1 applications. Both 5V standby and 12V auxiliary outputs can be wired Or-able when the main output is disabled. Synchronous rectification delivers exceptionally high efficiency: up to 93% in some models.

Micrel's ClockWorks™ Flex FamilyHighly Configurable Programmable Clock Synthesizer Family That Breaks the 100 Femto-Second Jitter Barrier

Micrel’s ClockWorks™ Flex Family of ultra-high performance clock synthesizers is based on RotaryWave™ technology. It enables world class reference timing generation for networking, storage and video applications, being the first mainstream clock synthesizer architecture to break the 100 femtosecond jitter barrier. The ClockWorks Flex Family offers flexible clock generation and distribution solutions that cover the most commonly used output formats, LVCMOS, LVPECL, LVDS and HCSL, with frequency coverage up to 250MHz for single-ended LVCMOS clocks and up to 840MHz for differential LVPECL, LVDS and HCSL clock types.

In addition to its class leading jitter performance, the ClockWorks Flex line of clock generation and clock distribution products features superior power supply rejection, a critical performance attribute often overlooked in standard clock product design. ClockWorks devices do not need the normal kit of power supply filtering components required by most clock devices, so saves up to 30% on the total timing solution in hidden power supply conditioning costs and significantly streamlines the overall timing Bill of Materials.

BENEFITS:

Cost-effective compared to crystal oscillator plus buffer solution One ClockWorks device can replace 2 XOs + 2x 1:4 buffer (with differential output) or 2 XOs + 2x 1:8 buffer (with single-ended output)

Short lead time than crystal oscillator (3 weeks vs. 12 weeks) Flexibility: Supports customer-specific frequency configurations Different types and numbers of outputs

Optional SPI access to internal registers: Overwrite frequency configuration on-the-fly after power-up Multi-rate clocking and system level debug support

Better PSRR to simplify power supply design and increase system robustness
