““

First, one of the things I believe about Naples United Church of Christ is that we are a unique collection of God’s people gathered around a few ideas that I find compelling and life changing. We are different in a few basic ways from many other religious organizations in this community and we need to cherish those differences.

Lots of congregations are friendly. Friendly is fairly easy to achieve, but our call is just a bit harder. We are called to be inclusive, non-judgmental, and welcoming of the diversity that includes all of God’s children without exception. I think we do fairly well with this because inclusiveness is something we value.

We cherish the freedom of the individual conscience and respect one another’s opinions. We celebrate the fact that we don’t have to agree with one another, but when we do disagree the only rule is that we dare not be disagreeable.

As a congregation we recognize that while our ministers are pastors and teachers, they (especially me!) are not the fonts of all wisdom or priests conferred with either magical or intellectual infallibility. It is our job to ask questions and together seek answers that reflect the love of God in Jesus Christ and our call to love one another and this blessed world.

We are people called to resist the cynical talking heads that pollute civil discourse in this beautiful world and rob us of our God given time and intelligence. I don’t talk much about guilt, but it probably wouldn’t hurt any of us too much to feel guilty when we waste our time on things that tear down other people and their ideas instead of attempting to build something good for all of God’s children.

As a congregation we believe that ‘God is still speaking’ and that the church is the place to stretch our faith and grow our understanding of spiritual truth. We are people who don’t need to leave our brains at the door when we come to worship because we expect to be stretched by the mystery of the divine.

Take a walk through our wonderful church library next time you are in the building. It’s located on the south side of the Sanctuary and on the table and top shelves are some of the cutting edge books that might stretch your faith in the new year!

Exciting things are coming. Check out our Adult Education offerings and get ready for a weekend with cutting-edge biblical scholar, Marcus Borg, February 8-10.

As I enter my tenth year with you, I am more convinced of our unlimited potential as God’s people to deepen and strengthen our witness to this community. Who we are matters to so many!

With love, Ron

Let me devote this last columnof 2012 to a few random thoughts.

Moderator’s ReportRecently, I have been asked about the relationship between Precious Cargo Academy and our church by some members of our congregation. I thought it might be appropriate to use this column to answer some of these questions about PCA.

Precious Cargo Academy is a mission of the Naples United Church of Christ and its facilities are part of our campus. I encourage everyone who is interested to go to their website (preciouscargoacademy.org) for more information about the wonderful services PCA provides to children between the ages of six weeks and five years. I will include the opening quote on their website: “Precious Cargo Academy provides a Christian atmosphere where all children are encouraged to be part of a caring and nurturing early childhood education experience”. Each week the three-and four-year-old children meet for chapel with our youth directors in the Sanctuary, and the three-year-olds have chapel time in their classroom. Children are taught a new Bible story a week with an ecumenical perspective. Our youth directors concentrate on behavior-over-belief and teach God within all, inclusion, compassion, and self-awareness while concentrating on basic Christian morals and values. Prayer and quiet reflection are also introduced. Classroom objectives and rules are reinforced in this interactive and fun time with the children.

PCA is funded by the tuition it charges to parents and currently has an enrollment of around 100 children. As a mission of our church, PCA is charged no rent for their facility and pays an annual fee to our church to cover the variable costs it incurs, such as electricity, water and sewer, insurance etc. These costs are paid by our church and reimbursed by PCA. Variable costs are defined as those costs that would go away if PCA did not exist on our campus. In addition, PCA covers its own capital costs, and this last year has replaced some air conditioners and windows etc.

In addition, from time to time our Board of Missions and Outreach has donated funds to the PCA scholarship fund. This helps families who send children to PCA when they run into financial hardships and would have to remove their children without our help. PCA and the Board of Missions and Outreach are currently in discussions about the possibility of establishing an additional fund to provide full scholarships to one or two children who would not be able to attend PCA without full financial help. This has not been done before and seems appropriate for consideration for this wonderful mission of our church.

Our overall children/youth program starts with PCA and extends through high school. We think of this as a continuum where we offer programs for children from the ages of six weeks through seniors in high school. We would like these children/youth to stay a part of our community where we can touch and enrich their lives during this time. We offer all types of programs depending on age, such as Junior Disciples (which includes our youth choir and the annual children’s musical), a Children’s Worship Service, Vacation Bible School and Mission Trips. We also have Rake and Roll (a community service program) and other service projects with some of our mission partners, Youth Group, Confirmation Class and fun outings like Night of Joy at Disney World, Family Movie Nights, and Family Bowling Nights. In 2012 we had 126 children participate in one or more of these programs.

Finally, I would like you all to know that on January 27, 2013 after the second service, we will hold the annual meeting for our church. At this meeting, I will go into some more detail about the state of our church and briefly talk about the broad number of activities that are part of our church community. Our Treasurer, Charlie Hanscomb, will give a brief financial report and we will ask for a vote to approve our proposal to revise our existing bylaws and to approve our nominations to various church leadership positions for 2013. Usually about 150-200 people attend. I encourage more of you to attend this year and promise a short and interesting meeting about our church.

Look forward to seeing you there.

5 December 2012

This is the time of year that we think about our connec-tions to our loved ones, our friends, and those who need a helping hand and our love of God. Christ is reborn in the Bethlehems of our homes and daily lives. Take time, slow down, be still, be awake to the Divine Mystery that looks so common and so ordinary yet is wondrously present in our lives. Opportunity for works of charity are great in our community; bring food for the food banks, help the elderly by reading to them or help a child in need of clothes, shoes or a teacher to assist them in their school work. We all have special gifts to be freely given; a handshake or kind word or a simple smile.

Our 2013 floral calendar is available and can be found at the reception desk every Sunday. Please enter the dates you would like to reserve for special floral tributes. A phone call to Kaleigh in our church office will confirm your reservation; she will ensure that your dedication is included in the bulletin. You may of course, call Kaleigh directly at 261-5469. She will be happy to check the availability of the date you request and enter your reservation. All dedicated arrangements are to be prepaid and the cost is $60.00 for the standard altar arrangement, and $30.00 for the pulpit or lectern arrangement. Following the 11:00 am service, the flowers are yours to take home or share with someone who cannot come to church and would appreciate the beauty. It is a blessing for us when you choose to dedicate an arrangement. Thank you so much!

One last reminder from the Board of Deacons; if you would like to become an usher or greeter, and haven’t let anyone know, please call me at 239-261-5469 or tell one of the Deacons on any Sunday.

Board of Mission and Outreach

One of the stories featured on a recent edition of a television news magazine show recounted the hardship of a family that had slipped from the middle class into poverty as a consequence of the continuing effects of the recent recession. The story graphically illustrated the emotional devastation visited upon this family as they had to rely on a food bank for the first time in their lives.

The United Church Board for Ministerial Assistance, a ministry of the Pension Boards, hears similar stories recounted on an almost daily basis as active and retired clergy and lay employees turn to us for help because the economy has eroded their financial resources, and their dreams.

Your gift to the Christmas Fund for the Veterans of the Cross and the Emergency Fund helps the Ministerial Assistance Board to bring a ray of light and hope in desperate life circumstances.

Your gift can bring joy to the simplest of life’s moments, as illustrated in this note from a recipient of a Christmas “Thank You” Gift Check:

“What a most wonderful blessing it truly is to receive a “check of love” from the Pension Boards this Advent season of our Christian year! My wife and I were thrilled to receive your generous donation so that we can experience a wonder-ful family togetherness…. and then share all our love …and some gifts for our grandchildren and our great-granddaughter too. All this because of your thought-fulness … so that we know we are not forgotten.”

Here at Naples UCC, we will receive this “Christmas Fund for the Veterans of the Cross and the Emergency Fund” offering on December 9.

THANK YOU!

THANK YOU!

To all our thoughtful and generous church members and friends, we thank you for helping the Ebenezer School program through a rough financial time. Our commitment to the school is a big one and it is a continuing one. There are 106 tots learning to read and write, and in their own small way they are ever grateful “to that church in Florida”. For these very special children it is a chance to leave their meager existence and move on to a better life.

Please look for angels on the Angel Tree in the narthex on December 2.

Gifts must be received at the church by Sunday, December 9th.

Each angel is a request for a gift for a baby or toddler at the Immokalee Teenage Parenting Program. The babies and their mothers will have an abundant Christmas because of your generosity. With this program, the Collier County School district seeks to guide teen parents and pregnant teens to earn a high school diploma, and to increase the students’ level of knowledge and skill in health care, parenting skills and child growth and development.

A daycare center cares for the babies while the mothers attend classes. With help from all, we are able to give these young families toys, clothes, and grocery certificates. Those of us who have delivered the gifts in past years know how truly thrilled and grateful they are. Stop by the Angel Tree in the narthex and read the thank-you letters that they wrote!

Here is how you can help.

1. Select an “angel” from the tree in the narthex. Do the shopping. Return the gift to the Angel Tree, gift-wrapped with the angel attached, no later than Sunday, December 9th.

2. Financial contributions for the grocery certificates are most welcome. Committee members will be available by the tree for your contributions, or send your check to the church office marked “Angel Tree”.

You may call Charnley Marsden at 239-261-5469 if you have questions.

Thank you for sharing this Christmas!~ Charnley Marsden and the Angel Tree Committee

Dear Friends,

This season continues with much enthusiasm and growth in our children and youth programs. For Trunk or Treat, we collaborated with Precious Cargo to make this event better than ever. The Precious Cargo Academy Committee, our youth, and enthusiastic volunteers, ran carnival games, a tattoo booth, a bounce house and other fun activities. We enjoyed pizza before Trunk or Treating with over 100 participants - what a great evening! Special thanks to all who helped to make this such a wonderful event, along with Bud Schroeder who provided the awesome decorations in our courtyard!

Our volunteering continues to help make a difference in the community around us. A number of our families and youth participated in the Meals of Hope food packaging event. There was even a family room so our younger children were able to share in this wonderful service project. Guest speaker, Katie Schweikhardt from the Harry Chapin Food Bank, one of our mission partners, spoke to our congregation and then joined our children in their worship service. She helped us all understand what an incredible impact we made as we packaged over 128,000 meals. She also talked about other ways we can continue to make a difference in our community. We participated in helping with the congregation’s generous donations by packing and delivering food bags from our Thanksgiving Food Drive to Grace Place and St. Matthew’s House, along with packing food bags at St. Matthew’s House for distribution.

Our youth made over $700 at the Bazaar’s Patio Café this year toward their California summer mission and Synod trip. Thank you all for your support – you are truly blessing lives!

Thank you and God bless you,Nancy Van Fleet

Classes meet for thirteen consecutive Tuesdays in Nelson Hall from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, as well as three Saturday retreats. This class is taught every other year and includes fifty hours of training in Christian care giving. Topics include listening skills, boundaries, feelings, assertiveness, confidentiality, the use of prayer, and ministering to people in specific situations such as divorce, terminal illness, and grief. Stephen Ministers are also trained to recognize when a care receiver’s needs go beyond the care a Stephen Minister can provide and how to refer the care receiver for additional care. At the end of training, Stephen Ministers are assigned to a care receiver and meet with that person for one hour each week. Stephen Ministers also commit to attending one two-hour meeting a month for continuing education and supervision. Many of our Stephen Ministers are part-time residents as are many of our care receivers.

By what measureDo you determine the value of your life -Whether your time on earthWas well spent or wasted? What are the tools you use to make your decision?

What are the ingredients that are in your mind,The value system you use,The voices inside your soulThat fashion your self conceptAnd the way you look at your journey?

What do you talk about mostAnd who do you choose to be aroundAnd who to shunFor what reasons And with what depth?

How do you measure who you have beenAnd who you are now,What you strive for in your futureAnd achievements make you proudAs you begin your mornings and wrap up your days?

By the scenes you have hungOn the rooms of your mind...By the walls you have torn down...By the problems you have solvedAnd the new styles you have tattooed on your soul?

Is it the number of checksThat pour into your storage placeOr the value of the things you own Or the victories you have had over challengesThat stretched your imagination and capacity?

Is it the skill you have That is unique and worthy of another’s admiration -The way you can sell your opinionsThat convinces others in your worldThat you have wisdom beyond the common measure?

Is it your way of caring for life -Your own and others -And the illustration you have beenTo children, friends and the communityThat insures that you will be missed and remembered?

It is your attachment to reality,To “truth” and “facts,”That marks you as a pioneerIn love with adventureYet responsible to the world that provides your sustenance?

What are the standards you set that Color your momentsWith “inadequate”Or causes you to gather the husks of failureAnd line your hallways with disappointments.

By what measuresDo you determine the value of your life -Whether your time on earthWhat causes you to think your life has been well spent - or wasted? What are the tools you use to make your decision?

Endowment Committee

As a reminder, the focus of our five-year endowment campaign “Preserving our Future” has not been on current gifts, rather it has been on asking members to consider making a commitment now to include NUCC in their estate plans only to take effect after they are no longer living. About 90 % of our gifts so far have been estate gifts.

Last month we covered the fundamentals and benefits of including NUCC in your will.

This month we will highlight certain types of assets where your will does not control how those assets are transferred after your passing.

In some ways, this makes gifting those assets less involved than changing your wills and trusts. However, it is important to be sure your attorney is aware of your intentions and actions.

Assets that are often considered for gifts to charities and are not controlled by your will are:

• IRAs, 401(k)s and other retirement plan assets. With each of these different types of retirement plan assets you get to name a beneficiary or beneficiaries to receive the benefits of your plan.

• Life insurance policies. You need to name the beneficiary or beneficiaries of your life insurance policies who are to receive the death benefits after your lifetime.

• Some observations for you to consider in naming beneficiaries for your retirement plan and insurance policies –

• NUCC (and other favorite charities) can be listed as partial beneficiaries – allowing you to balance family and non-family as you see fit.

• It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. You can name NUCC as a contingent beneficiary – only to benefit if your primary beneficiary is no longer living.

• Just as with charitable bequests contained in your will, these beneficiary designation transfers not covered in your will—offer the same benefits

• Simplicity – just completing the beneficiary designation form will accomplish the transfer after you die.

• Flexibility. Because you are not actually making a gift until after your lifetime, you can change your mind at any time.

• Versatility. Your designation can leave a specific amount of money or a percentage of the asset to NUCC.

• Tax Relief. If your estate is subject to estate tax, your gift to NUCC will not be included in your taxable estate.

Be sure to include retirement plan assets and insurance policies as you consider your participation in our endowment campaign. Please call the church office to set up a meeting to discuss your personal contribution and desired role in “Preserving our Future.”

“Fixing the Moral Deficit” A Balanced Way to Balance the Budget“Fixing the Moral Deficit” A Balanced Way to Balance the Budget

by Ron Sider

The author engages some core philosophical and ethical questions, such as: Am I responsible for my neighbor? Should we have special concern for the poor? What is justice? How much inequality is unacceptable or desirable? What is the role of government in overcoming poverty? He lays out the hard economic facts in tandem with clear biblical principles for engagement.

“Following the Path” The Search for a Life of Passion, Purpose and Joy“Following the Path” The Search for a Life of Passion, Purpose and Joy

by Joan Chittister

In our modern society, the range of answers to the question, “What am I supposed to do with my life?” can seem overwhelming. The author brings the insights of her years of teaching and contemplation to bear on this issue, giving us a new way forward. Through her examination of spiritual callings, gifts, change and discernment, she guides us through the process of finding our gifts and following our own special call.

“Listening to the Light” “Listening to the Light” How to Bring Quaker Simplicity and Integrity Into Our LivesHow to Bring Quaker Simplicity and Integrity Into Our Lives

by Jim Pym

The author shows us how to incorporate Quaker ideals and practices into our lives—to find our own Light—the Divine—within ourselves, to realize that the everyday is spiritual, to simplify our lives and care for the planet, to bring a sense of commitment and integrity to our actions, and to learn to listen. In the words of William Penn,“True godliness doesn’t turn us out of the world, but enables us to live better in it, and excites our efforts to mend it “

The Women’s Fund of Southwest Florida releases ground breaking research report on the status of women in Southwest Florida with assistance from The Women’s Fellowship of Naples United Church of Christ

Noteworthy

First comprehensive study on the economic, health and achievement needs of girls and women in the region.

The Women’s Fellowship of Naples United Church of Christ invested $1,000 in 2012 to support the work of The Women’s Fund of Southwest Florida. Today, The Women’s Fund has completed a study on the status of women in Southwest Florida, examining four core areas including population and diversity, employment and income, achieve-ment and autonomy, health and well-being. The Women’s Fund commissioned the Regional Economic Research Institute at Florida Gulf Coast University to investigate the status of women and girls in Southwest Florida in order to benchmark progress, inform public policy, set funding priorities and programming, and to inspire demand for additional knowledge about the status of women and girls in Southwest Florida.

Key findings of the research are being used to help guide The Women’s Fund of Southwest Florida in opportunities for establishing programs and directing funds. Several posi-tive attributes for women in Southwest Florida were found:

• A greater percentage of girls than boys graduate from high school

• More women are registered to vote than men

• Nearly 10 percent of women are self-employed in their own business

• Women currently have lower rates of unemployment

But other key findings cause concern:

• Median annual earnings for women are about 87 percent of that earned by men in Southwest Florida

• Women own only 26 percent of Southwest Florida businesses

• Less than 10 percent of Southwest Florida corporate board members are women

• No women represent Southwest Florida in the U.S. House or Senate

• Southwest Florida homeownership rates for women (8.5-15.2 percent) are substantially less than overall homeownership (71-79 percent)

“The research explored issues facing women and girls in Southwest Florida such as why fewer women work in management occupations than men, how many women start businesses per year, and what types of businesses women are likely to start,” said Brenda Tate. “As a result, The Women’s Fund is investigating several new programs to support financial and educational opportunities for women. One is a leveraged savings program for low-to-moderate income women to assist them in building financial assets for education/training, first home purchase, or business startup/expansion. The other is a program to offer women business owners access to capital for their business start-up or expansion paired with training and counseling. The success of these programs will depend on the Fund’s collaboration with partners such as the Small Business Development Center, CredAbility.org, and financial institutions serving our region.”

The mission of The Women’s Fund of Southwest Florida is to raise money through federal and state grants, and relationships with individual and corporate donors, and employ a strategic grant-making model to fund programs and organizations that address the special, critical needs of women and girls in Southwest Florida. Founding members of the Women’s Fund of Southwest Florida Board of Directors include Brenda Tate, president; Linda Uhler, Secretary/Treasurer; Lalai Hamric, Vice Chair and Lou Pontius, Chair.
