What is it?

• Nuclear energy is energy in the nucleus (core) of an atom. Atoms are tiny particles that make up every object in the universe. There is enormous energy in the bonds that hold atoms together. Nuclear energy can be used to make electricity. But first the energy must be released. It can be released from atoms in two ways: nuclear fusion and nuclear fission. In nuclear fusion, energy is released when atoms are combined or fused together to form a larger atom. This is how the sun produces energy. In nuclear fission, atoms are split apart to form smaller atoms, releasing energy. Nuclear power plants use nuclear fission to produce electricity.

Where is the Nuclear energy form found?• Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant is located in

Somervell County, Texas. The nuclear power plant is located 40 miles (65 km) southwest of Ft. Worth and about 60 miles (100 km) southwest of Dallas. It relies on nearby Squaw Creek Reservoir for cooling water. The plant has about 1,300 employees and is operated by Luminant Generation, a subsidiary of Energy Future Holdings Corporation. In June 2008, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approved a request to increase the generating capacity of units 1 and 2 by approximately 4.5% each. Luminant Generation Co. implemented the changes during refueling outages.

How is the Nuclear energy form is used today?

• Nuclear Energy is America’s second largest source of electrical power after coal.

• Over 110 nuclear power used in America today.• Saved America 44 billion dollars because energy is

cheaper to produce then coal.• The energy is used to heat water, which produces

steam which turns a turbine

What are the advantages?• Nuclear energy has overcome 3 of the largest problems that

us people have come across in a struggle to get energy.• If you were to build a nuclear energy power plant, they do not

take up a lot of room.• It is the most concentrated form of energy.• Nuclear energy power plants do not cause that much

pollution to the air.

What are the disadvantages?

•One of the major disadvantages of nuclear explosions. The cause radiation. Which radiation harms the cells and tissues of the body.

Interesting Facts • There are 442 nuclear energy plants all around the

world All of those nuclear energy plants contributed more than 19% of the world’s energy.

• Nuclear power plants don’t need to use as much andd energy as other plants

In France nuclear energy powers over a and 80% of the countries electricity.

Economic impacts

•Nuclear energy has cost the U.S. over $492,000,000,000• It also can’t reduce foreign oil prices

Environmental impacts• Although a Nuclear energy power plant may not cause that

much pollution when an accident happens it can cause many problems in the environment and in people. And it can be much more deadlier the pollution, due to fossil fuels. It can hurt the environment and people because of the radiation poisoning. It can kill you instantly or kill you later because it gave you canser problems.
