Students
Illustration. John and Mary.
To start off
In this unit, John and Mary are going to explain to you the differences between cardinal and ordinal numbers.
This unit is divided into four activities:
Activity 1: In this activity you are going to learn what cardinal and ordinal
numbers are.
Activity 2: In this activity you are going to make a recording with Audacity
about numbers.
Activity 3: In this activity you are going to play a game.
Final activity: In this activity you are going to complete a document with
some activities about numbers.
At the end of this unit, you will have done several types of activities: you will have
to work with classmates or on your own, you will have to think, to go a step ahead if you want more information, to evaluate yourself, etc.
These are some of the skills you will be practising along this unit:
You are going to learn cardinal and ordinal numbers.
Sometimes you will work with other classmates. Other times you will work
alone. Your teacher will grade your participation in the group.
You are going to work with audio editing software (Audacity).
Introduction
Illustration. Introduction.
Help John and Mary by doing the following activities about numbers:
Activity 1. Cardinal and ordinal numbers.
Activity 2. Let's record ourselves!
Activity 3. The Number Contest.
Final activity. One, two, three.
Activity 1: Cardinal and ordinal numbers
Let's practise together: Cardinal and
ordinal numbers
In this activity you are going to work in pairs. Ready?
Firstly you have to visit this link:
Numbers!
Take screenshots of each activity you do (you can use GIMP), paste them onto a text document and then, send it to your teacher via email.
When you finish, your teacher will write some numbers on the Interactive
Whiteboard. You have to say the corresponding ordinal numbers and your teacher will write them in a text document on the Interactive Blackboard.
Finally, you will do an individual activity. In the document you will see a table with
two columns, one for cardinal and the other for ordinal numbers. In each one there are blanks that you have to complete. Save the document before you start:
Cardinal and ordinal numbers.

When you finish the document, you will share it with your classmates and your
teacher using Google Docs. Then, you and your classmates will correct each other.
More...One for the first
In this activity you are going to play a game. You have to work in groups of four students.
These are the rules of the game:
You have to look for a name for your group (for example, A, B or C) and
create a document in Google Docs (you will share this document with your
teacher). Then, the students of each group will be numbered from 1 to 4.
Student number 1 from group A is the first player. He or she has to stand up
and say three numbers in English. He or she can say ordinal, cardinal
numbers or a mix of both.
In each of the other groups, player number 1 must write down the numbers.
When they finish, the teacher will correct the numbers on the Interactive
Whiteboard. If the player of a group has written the three numbers properly,
that group wins one point. If he or she has written one number wrong, that
group doesn't win anything and the group of the player who has said the
number wins the point.
The teacher will have a spreadsheet on the Interactive Whiteboard to write the score of the groups.
Activity 2: Let's record ourselves!
Let's practise together: Let's record
ourselves!
Now you are going to learn how to use ordinal and cardinal numbers properly. You
will see some sentences to complete on the Interactive Whiteboard. For example:
Today is May the (fourteen/fourteenth).
The (one/first) month of the year is January.
When I go to high school, I will be (fourteen/fourteenth).
The (eleven/eleventh) month of the year is November.
All the classmates must agree on the correct answer.
When you finish this activity you will make a recording with Audacity in small groups. The next document has some sentences to complete, read and record.
Let's record ourselves!:
Complete these sentences.
Be careful! You write and pronounce dates in a different way. For example,
you write '1st January 2004', 'January 1st 2004', '1 January 2004' or
'January 1 2004', but you say 'The first of January, 2004' or 'January the first 2004'.
Now, look at the dates below. How do you say those dates?
September is the ____ month of the year.
The ____ month of the year is February.
Halloween is on _________ October.
On _________ December we celebrate Christmas Day. _________ February is Saint Valentine's Day.
When you have made the recording, all the classmates will listen and talk about it. The whole class will decide on the best recording.
You have to send the recording to your teacher by email.
Finally, the whole class will see these links and practise a little bit more:
Be my Valentine.
Festivals and special days.
The Greatest Britons.
Let's practise together: I can explain to
you
In this activity you have to work in pairs. You have to make a presentation in
Impress.
In your presentation you have to explain how to write ordinal numbers. Your presentation must have these topics:
Ordinal numbers from 1 to 20.
Ordinal numbers: 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100
You can use this link:
Ordinal numbers (Wikipedia).
When your presentation is finished, you will upload it to Authorstream. Then you will have to explain it to the whole class on the Interactive Whiteboard.
All the classmates will correct the presentation if there is a mistake. Then, you will
apply the possible corrections and you will send the link of the final presentation to
your teacher by mail. The teacher will put the links in the class blog to share your presentations and all of you can use them to study.
Activity 3: The Number Contest
Illustration. The Number Contest.
Let's practise together: The Number
Contest
You are going to play a game about ordinal and cardinal numbers. Split the class
into two groups. Each member of each group will decide on one ordinal and one cardinal number. Each group will use the document below to write the answers:
The Number Contest.
The quiz works like this:
Someone in the group will say one of the written numbers. One member of the
other group has to say it in English and write it on the Interactive Whiteboard. Later, he or she will write a sentence with this number.
Your teacher will correct the work according to the following score system:
Proper pronunciation: 1 point.
Number written properly: 1 point.
Sentence written properly: 2 points.
Your teacher will write the score in a text document on the Interactive Whiteboard.
Now it's time for the other group. The game will continue until all the classmates
play. Finally, you add all the points in each category to find the winning group in:
Pronunciation.
Writing numbers.
Writing a sentence.
And you will find the overall winner. It will be the group with the highest score in all sections.
The document with the answers of each group will be the final product for the teacher. You have to send it to your teacher by email.
It's your turn: Bingo
In this activity you are going to play a game of Bingo with your classmates. Your
teacher will give you a card.
When all the students are ready the game will start.
Your teacher will say a number, if you have written it, you have to colour the cell.
If you have finished a row, you will say "Row!" and the teacher will check if it's right. If it is yes, you win one point.
The game finishes when somebody completes the table. At this moment he/she will
say "Bingo!" and the teacher will check it. If so, that student will be the winner and he/she will win three points.
Good luck!
Self-evaluation
Before starting the final evaluation, check what you have learned with all the
activities you have been doing so far.
Final Activity
Task: One, two, three
In this activity you have to complete a text document that your teacher will send to
you by email.
When you finish, you have to send the document to your teacher again.
The document has the instructions of the four activities that you have to do:
Activity 1: Numbers, listening. Your teacher will say 10 cardinal numbers and
10 ordinal numbers, you have to write them down.
Activity 2: You have to write 6 sentences with some numbers from Activity 1.
You have to write 3 sentences with cardinal numbers and 3 with ordinal
numbers.
Activity 3: You have to write some sentences properly.
Activity 4: You have to make a recording with Audacity. You have to read the
sentences of Activity 3. When you finish your recording, you have to send it by email to your teacher.
