Pioneers of Nursing Informatics Transform Healthcare

Dr. Harriet H. Werley Dr. Virginia K. Saba

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Nursing Informatics Pioneers in the United States have been working to improve healthcare with the use of information management and technology for at least 35 years. The American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Nursing Informatics Pioneer project which honors these Pioneers will be described. Here are two Pioneers – Dr Harriet H Werley on the left and Dr. Virginia K. Saba on the right. In 1977 Dr Werley along with Dr. Margaret Grier conducted the First Research State of the Art Conference on Nursing Information Systems at the University of Illinois in Chicago. Due to her many accomplishments including the Nursing Minimum Data Set and a founding editor of Research in Nursing and Health, there is an award in her name through AMIA with a nurse as first author that is judged to make the greatest contribution to advancing the field of nursing informatics. Werley became the first nurse researcher at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the Army Nurse Corps converted to a baccalaureate-prepared group under her leadership. Werley was named a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 1973; she was designated a Living Legend by the organization in 1994. She became a Fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics in 1991. Personally, I see these ladies and the “mothers” of nursing informatics in the United States. More about Dr. Saba to follow.

Presentation Notes
Since 2004, the members of the AMIA Nursing informatics History Project seek to examine our history to evaluate the present and predict or plan for the future. The current Co-Chairs of the AMIA Nursing Informatics Working Group History Project are Dr. Juliana Brixey and myself. Along with the project members, current and past, we seek to identify actions by which nurse informatics specialists are advancing health care and further evolving their role. There are 143 pioneers that were identified when the project started, each of whom who have contributed to the evolution of nursing informatics. Each Pioneer was responsible for one or more significant innovations that impacted on clinical practice, administration, research, nursing informatics education and/or on healthcare/nursing technology. This project provides a historical picture of how efforts of the Nursing Informatics Pioneers have helped create today’s and promote tomorrow’s nursing informatics specialty which has served to transform healthcare.

Overall History Project

• Build National Library of Medicine archive for nursing informatics history

• Research/document history

• Videotape stories to preserve history for Nursing Informatics

Pioneer Defined

• Innovator, trailblazer, or groundbreaker in some aspect of nursing informatics

• “First” in opening up a new area/aspect of nursing informatics,

• Shaped the thinking/direction of nursing informatics, and

• Demonstrated sustained leadership in nursing informatics

-AMIA Nursing Informatics History Committee, 2005

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The Committee defined a Nursing Informatics Pioneer as: “An innovator, trailblazer, or groundbreaker in some aspect of nursing informatics, first to open a new area and prepare a way for other nurses to follow, who shaped the thinking/direction of nursing informatics and demonstrated sustained leadership in Nursing Informatics.”
Page 9: Nursing Informatics Pioneers - Amazon S3s3.amazonaws.com/rdcms-himss/files/production/public...She is a senior practitioner, researcher, and policy exec\ tive in nursing, health informatics,

Videotaping

• 145 pioneers identified • 33 videotaped (Chicago, Washington, Baltimore)

– July 2005 – November 2007 – Summer Institute in Nursing Informatics – AMIA Fall Meetings

• Selection – Earliest contributors to various aspects of

nursing informatics – Availability and willingness to be interviewed – Limited resources

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Due to the large number of candidates, it was decided to restrict the project to those in the United States. It was also determined that we would focus on those that had contributions during the years 1960 to 2000. Based on convenience and funding, 33 of the pioneers were interviewed during AMIA Symposiums in Chicago and Washington, DC., and the Summer Institute in Nursing Informatics in Baltimore, MD.

Our second objective was to: Discuss the contributions of  selected nurse pioneers to healthcare I already mentioned a bit about Dr. Harriet Werley. From these selected pioneers bios, we can learn about Dr. Kathleen McCormick. Dr. McCormick is Senior Principal Scientist/Vice President, SAIC-Frederick in Rockville, Md. She is a senior practitioner, researcher, and policy executive in nursing, health informatics, bioinformatics, cardiopulmonary physiology, and gerontology. She has co-authored 5 editions of Essentials of Nursing Informatics published by McGraw-Hill, New York. She has also published over 100 peer reviewed journal articles. Kathleen has a demonstrated personal dedication to achieving major advancements in nursing and healthcare informatics. Her first role in NI was as a nursing informatics scientist and clinical trial researcher within the National Institutes of Health, Clinical Center, and the National Institute on Aging. She was first involved in 1981 with a Computers in Nursing course sponsored by NIH and spoke at the early 1980s NIH national conference. She is a Fellow in the College of Medical Informatics, American Academy of Nursing, The Gerontology Society of America, and HIMSS. She is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, Institute of Medicine. Susan Newbold – you already learned about me in the introduction. I co-founded CARING, a large, geographically dispersed Nursing Informatics group in 1982. and you may not know that I conducted the first hospital workshop: Computers in Nursing Practice in 1983 and Dr. Saba was a speaker. Dr. Saba, a nationally and internationally known pioneer of computer technology in nursing has for over 40 years, spearheaded the nursing informatics movement. She initiated academic technology programs and supported development of healthcare information technology systems including Clinical Care Classification (CCC) System. During her career served as a Nurse Officer, USPHS, providing national leadership and promoting technology in nursing practice. She served in academia receiving in 1997, Distinguished Scholar Title from Georgetown University where she integrated nursing technology in SON programs, facilities, and where she conducted federally funded research creating CCC System, National Nursing Standard. Also. While Dr Saba served at Uniformed Services University, she coordinated the initial Graduate Nursing Distance Learning Project with Veterans Administration. She has served on several national (ONC) healthcare standards committees for Meaningful Use initiatives. She is President/CEO of Sabacare Inc & CCC System integrating this nursing terminology into electronic healthcare documentation systems.
