Hello Vanessa.

Obama vows ‘relentless’ response to oil spill

Venice, Louisiana (CNN) — President Obama said Sunday his administration has mounted a "relentless response" to the oil spill unleashed by the sinking of an offshore drill rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Obama met with local, state and federal officials involved in the cleanup in southeastern Louisiana, the closest stretch of coastline threatened by the massive spill. Afterward, he said that despite "the most advanced technology available," the spill may not be stopped for many days. "I'm not going to rest, and none of the gentlemen and women who are here are going to rest or be satisfied, until the leak is

stopped at the source, the oil on the Gulf is contained and cleaned up and the people of this region are able to go back to their lives and their livelihoods," he said. "We will spare no resource to clean up whatever damage is caused." Obama met with the commandant of the Coast Guard, Adm. Thad Allen; EPA administrator Lisa Jackson; Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal; and the presidents of several parish governments after arriving, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said. The president's briefing included an update on the procedures being attempted to cap the well and the economic and environmental impact of the spill, Gibbs said. After landing in New Orleans, Louisiana, on Sunday, Obama joined Jindal

on a two-hour drive to Venice, a staging ground for efforts to fight the growing slick. That would mean oil damaging sensitive coastal wetlands and industries, including a vital fishing sector that was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Obama initially planned to fly over the affected area by helicopter, but weather conditions prevented the flight. Before his trip, Cabinet officials warned he would find a dire situation. Salazar blamed the explosion that caused the spill on a failure in rig technology intended to prevent so-called blowouts. "There is no doubt at all here that what has happened is the blowout prevention mechanism at the bottom of the well ... is defective," Salazar said. "While there have been blowouts in the past, we have never

seen anything that has been quite of this magnitude." The well is owned by oil company BP. Lamar McKay, president of BP America, told ABC's "This Week" that the company doesn't know why the blowout preventer failed. All three officials interviewed by CNN repeatedly emphasized that BP is legally responsible for spill and clean-up efforts. They avoided direct criticism of the company, but said BP must do more to try to cap the gushing well. Allen called the spill "one of the most complex things we've ever dealt with," and said it was impossible so far to predict how much oil will eventually leak.

The Neighborhood Explorer

“I’d like to get settled into my new community and develop a local network.”

Samantha Castro

Age:!24

Education:!BA Communications

Occupation:!Real Estate Agent

Goals• Build strong personal and professional

connections• Be ef!cient & effective at work• Know that she is well-informed• Feel con!dent and professional• Enjoy serendipitous discovery• Consume personally and professionally

relevant news• Connect with the local community• Stay current on market trends• Stay within her limited budget

Questions• How do I get useful content quickly?• How much work do I need to do?• How up-to-date is the content?• Why would I pay for news?• How much will it really cost me?• What’s my monthly payment?

Influencers• Ease of use • Reputation• Social value• Career value• Humor• Cost

News Sources• Facebook• LinkedIn• Yahoo News• Co-workers in Columbus (word-of-mouth)• Friends & family in Pittsburgh (word-of-

mouth, e-mail, phone)

News Consumption Habits• Browses on laptop at home or desktop

computer in the of!ce during brief intervals of down time

• Listens to the morning traf!c and weather report on local radio while driving to work

• Likes consuming lighter news towards the end of the day to unwind.

News Sharing Habits• Prefers sharing funny news with friends via

Facebook and sometimes e-mail

Frustrations• Keeping up with the social network is

important for Samantha’s job, but she gets easily distracted online and can end up wasting time if she’s not mindful.

• She is constantly on the go and has trouble !nding time when she can catch up on personal interests. There’s too much to wade through when she does have time.

• It’s tough to track all her expenses, and some months she overspends.

Samantha graduated a year ago from the University of Pittsburgh with a bachelor degree in Communications and works as a real estate agent in Columbus, OH. She has a cubicle at the of!ce and travels frequently in her car to meet with clients.

Samantha moved from her hometown to start her job, so her core net-work is not as close by as it once was. She spends a lot of time following local news as it helps her connect with issues and activities of interest to her community as well as stay informed on current market trends. She keeps in touch with her family via phone and, less often, via e-mail. She uses Facebook to communicate with her college friends and LinkedIn to foster her business connections.

She has a smartphone, a PC laptop, and a work computer. She gets her news at various points throughout the day when she has down time. She makes $35,000 a year.

The Concerned Parent

“It’s tough being a single parent, but I’ve got to do everything I can for my son.”

Daniel Gri!ths

Age:!41

Education:!PhD Electrical Engineering

Occupation:!Community College Professor

Goals• Be a good father but also “cool”• Maintain a strong relationship with his son• Keep track of his son’s activities• Make sure Josh gets a top-notch education• Maintain and build professional connections• Stay up to date on technical news• Get tenure

Questions• Can it get me news about my son’s school?• Will it work on my smartphone?• How can I customize it?• How do I share links with other people?• Why would I pay for news?• How much will it really cost me?• Can the whole family use one account?

Influencers• Family relevance• Convenience• Ef!ciency

News Sources• Slashdot.org• NYTimes.com• CNN (television)• People in his department (word-of-mouth

and e-mail)

News Consumption Habits• Checks the morning weather report on his

smartphone when he wakes up• Browses technology and national news on

his desktop computer in the of!ce during lunch

• Catches up with his son in the evening at the dinner table or, if it’s Friday, on the couch with pizza or at a local restaurant

News Sharing Habits• Enjoys discussing technology news with

colleages• Circulates department news via e-mail

Frustrations• There are so many interesting developments

in the world but never enough time to catch up with everything.

• Going through e-mail takes too much time.• Josh’s school doesn’t send home much

information, so Daniel gets most of the school news directly from Josh (at least, what Josh remembers to tell his dad).

Daniel is a 41-year-old community college professor in electrical engi-neering and a single dad to an 8th grader named Josh. He’s not really into online social networks and only has a Facebook account so he can keep an eye on his son’s Wall.

Between work and caring for his son, Daniel has very little free time. He gets most of his news at night watching TV for 20 minutes before he passes out, but he does read technology news and the New York Times online during his lunch break. He aspires to be a good father and main-tain a strong relationship with his son.

He uses a desktop computer in his campus of!ce mainly to create lesson plans and school documents. He recently got a smartphone and is having fun using it and trying out new apps. He makes $52,000 a year. te
