Carol HolldayGeneral managerThe Tap Room at Dubsdread549 W. Par St. Orlando, FL 32804

Dear Carol Hollday,

I am applying for a summer internship at the Tap Room at Dubsdread. As an intern, I would be able to learn the skills required for planning an event, assist those working on events and eventually become a full time employee.

As an intern at Dubsdread, I could contribute the skills I have learned throughout academic courses as well as the ones acquired through clubs, to the overall production of an event. I have skills in planning, design and communication. I have a background in journalism which would be beneficial when planning marketing materials for events involving Adobe InDesign and Photoshop. I have also completed countless deadlines and therefore know the importance of completing tasks in a timely manner.

Another quality I possess is good people skills. As a member of the Legend yearbook staff, being able to interact with others is essential. I enjoy going on interviews and interacting with other students who I might not have been as familiar with on campus. Getting to know others around you is a vital part of the high school experience. Because of this, I would feel comfortable getting to know clients to help make their event everything they wanted and more. Also, I have the ability to make plans and stick with them. Being photo editor on the yearbook staff has forced me to look ahead and plan to have days completely devoted to yearbook. As an intern, I would be able to plan to devote my days to the work at Dubsdread that needs to be completed.

Although the attached resume highlights my background well, a personal interview might better demonstrate these qualities and skills. I would appreciate a follow-up interview with you whenever you are available. Thank you for considering me for this internship. I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Respectfully yours.

self analyticalJournalism has become something more to me

than just a high school course. It has taught me many lessons that will be essential in my life. I have learned the

importance of meeting deadlines, working with others, and always lending a helping hand.

I first got started in journalism my freshman year of high school. I

was inspired to get involved after seeing all the fun my sister experienced during her years on staff. At first I was hesitant because of the time

consumption it involved, but looking back on it now, I wouldn’t have wanted to spend my high school years doing anything else. I’ve strengthened relationships

and made new friendships along the way and I wouldn’t trade that for free time any day.

One of the most valued lessons I learned in journalism was the importance of teamwork and working together. Because I was awarded the position of photo editor this year, this meant that I would be paired with the copy editor for each deadline. For the first time out of all my years on staff, I met most if not all of the deadlines. We divided tasks and helped each other when it was needed. We also always had to be in constant communication with each other to ensure the deed would be fulfilled.

Journalism is a valuable course for many reasons. It offers you a sense of satisfaction upon sight of your published works. It teaches you the importance of time management, organization, and teamwork. Not only will these be of great importance throughout high school, but throughout life as well. When its finally time for me to have a full time job, lessons that I learned in journalism will show their value greatly. It has prepared me for what is to come.

self analytical reflection oneI believe this spread to be my most significant piece of work. There was much time and effort put into getting great action shots and this goes to show that hard work pays off. Each picture on the page was my own, which in prior years was something I could only dream of. Working on this deadline was stressful but very beneficial in the long run. Due to poor lighting in the gymnasium, good pictures are sometimes hard to come about. I learned a lot about shooting action shots and learned ways to adjust settings on the camera. As a whole, this page essentially went from having no pictures at all on it, to having all pictures that I could be credited with. Although the search for pictures seemed never ending at times, it was definitely worth the stress to see my name next to all the pictures.

reflection twoI believe this piece is the one that could still use

some work. Although I think it is an interesting and fun page, I believe if we would’ve spent more time

searching for people with interesting things in their trunks or backpacks, we could’ve enhanced the page.

It was a struggle to find people with unusual things in their cars because most of the things that were unusual,

were in the cars of people hit listed or really involved in activities. We could’ve gone about finding people a different

way rather than just looking in cars and selecting random students.

reflection three I am proud of this picture for a few reasons. I like that the referee is out of focus, allowing for good depth of field. I also like how the light hits BJ’s face, highlighting his emotion. I captured the action by getting him while he was in the air. This was also the dominant on the boys basketball page and seeing it published was something to be proud of.

reflection three

This picture is something to be proud of because of the emotion captured in it. It is essential to always look for reactions when taking sports photos. As interesting as the players are, people’s reactions are just as satisfying. It all comes down to the second you point and shoot. This photo was captured at just the right second, showing his emotion towards the game.

I like this picture because rather than having a typical swimming picture that shows them gasping for air, it shows them seconds before their break for the surface. This picture has a center of visual interest and shows action. It also has a creative angle because I was shooting from below the swimmer, up.

reflection fourI believe that I was an asset to this staff for

different reasons. I think that to the best of my ability I strived to help those around me and offer

a helping hand whenever one was needed. I also committed myself to being photo editor this

year. By committing to this job, this meant that I would have to edit and critique people’s photographs, attend events

that others couldn’t attend themselves and grade photo days. Although it was time consuming, it was well worth it to be able to

get credit for so many pictures. I also get a sense of satisfaction when staffers ask me for help or advice because it shows that they value what I

have to say.

reflection four reflection fiveOne of the problems I had this year was keeping track of photo days. I would get so caught up on my deadline that I wouldn’t take the time to go back and make sure I graded the ones for each separate quarter. Because of this, I would get the dates mixed up and turn in grades for the wrong quarter. I also didn’t balance my time well between deadlines and photo days. I should’ve found time to deal with both. There also should’ve been more communication from me to the staffers in order to keep track of who was ready to be graded when. If these problems arose again, I would make sure to write down each person that was ready to be graded and find time to go through pictures thoroughly. I would also always have my handbook calendar with me at all times in order to keep track of who was in charge of covering what day. This could have all been avoided had I been organized and focused on managing my time wisely.

reflection sixOn my midterm, my three goals for the next

semester were to keep up with photo days, catch more mistakes, and shoot more events.

I believe I succeeded at catching more mistakes and shooting more events. I could’ve improved on

keeping track of photo days by being more organized and better communicating with staffers.

I caught more mistakes by really looking at the page and double checking COB’s, resolution, and where the image was placed.

This was helpful for staffers because they could fix their mistakes earlier instead of going through more editors and realizing they would

have to change or edit pictures. I made the effort to take more pictures by attending events that needed to be shot or by going for a staffer that couldn’t make it.

reflection sevenY15. Sports action photo, pg 166I would like the dominant to represent me because I think I did a good job of capturing action and emotion while using good lighting.

Y17. Academic photo pg 52 and 53I’m entering the dominant because it has good lighting and it captures a moment in time.

As students filed into the media center, they counted the

hours they spent preparing for end-of-course testing.

With the push towards EOC testing as a means to evaluate

students’ learning and teachers’ effectiveness, they both felt the

pressures of the high stakes test.

“Teachers don’t have the time they need to devote to using

different teaching styles to appeal to different learning styles

because they’re so focused on teaching all the information on a

standardized test,” senior Rebecca Burns said.

Each second teachers taught and students learned was more

valuable since testing took approximately 119 school days for

benchmarks, FAIR, PERT, FCAT, EOCs and make-up tests.

“Testing is disruptive to learning and time spent in class. I’m not

saying you should never have tests, but everything in moderation,”

science teacher Diana Hannot said.

Students understood the toll testing took on them and their

studies. To prepare for the tests, students and teachers made

adjustments, like not going as in-depth to cover more material.

“Teachers are held to very strict deadlines, so when they see

students don’t understand as much, they might not have the time

to slow down,” Burns said. “Students spend more time taking

tests than learning valuable skills for life.”

Students felt pressed for time since the increase in testing days

decreased the amount of time teachers had to cover the material.

“Teachers sometimes have to leave out certain material just

to cover the most important things before the test,” sophomore

James Downing said. “Testing takes time out of our days that is

valuable and makes kids get behind in their [other course] work

and learning.”

BRAIN CRAZY. In Rosalie Creighton’s Anatomy and Physiology class, senior Travis Corwin analyzes a brain. “I’ve done labs before where I dissected a fetal pig so I wasn’t grossed out [by the lab],” Corwin said. Eight groups dissected a sheep brain.

“[Making the most of my moments] makes me more diligent and focused on what I’m doing,” junior TRISTEN PEREZ said.

PRESSING

Y17. Academic photo pg 42 and 43I’m entering this photo because it is close up, well lit and shows action.

reflection eightThrough my years on staff, I think I have

learned a lot about design technique and how to work with different programs. I believe that

each year my portfolio has developed a little more. My first year on staff, my portfolio was about as basic

as it could get; a black background with a flower brush in the same spot on every single page. It’s safe to say that

it was not one of my best pieces of work. The next year there was a little more improvement. I still used brushes but this time I

played with the colors and typography. Although this portfolio is very basic compared to many, I feel as

though I’ve exerted more effort into this one rather than the previous ones. After changing my original design from a chevron patter, I decided to incorporate some of my photography as well as play with different tools and filters in Photoshop and InDesign. Even though these programs can be pretty intimidating, I’ve familiarized myself with them this year, which is something I tried to stay away from my first two years on staff. I’ve learned that if you just play around with these programs and try out new things, you might be satisfied with your outcome.
