Focus on Brain Tumor, Cerebrovascular and Head Trauma

A CME Conference designated for 11 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™

The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park

Friday-Saturday,December 13-14, 2013

Dear Colleagues:

On behalf of the Cushing Neuroscience Institute, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System, I would like to extend to you an invitation to New York Neurosurgery, a symposium that will be taking place at the Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park, on Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14, 2013. This year’s two-day CME event will focus on brain tumors, cerebrovascular disorders and head trauma. The event is designed to provide participants with state-of-the-art knowledge and expertise in these fields, drawn from national leaders and experts.

The conference dates and times have been chosen to allow you to bring your family to New York at the perfect time to see the lights and decorations, and to do some holiday shopping. The program dates also coincide with a celebration honoring Dr. Robert Grossman, who spent many decades as Chairman at Baylor and later Houston Methodist Hospital, from where he has recently stepped down. We are honored to have Dr. Grossman as this year’s keynote speaker and recipient of the Cushing Neuroscience Institute Lifetime Achievement Award. This celebration is included in your CME registration fee and will take place the evening of Friday, December 13 at the Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park. It is a beautiful venue that you will certainly enjoy and I encourage you to make your reservations as soon as possible given that it is a busy time of year in New York City.

It is my hope that you will be able to attend this innovative program and ultimately contribute to a better understanding of complex neurosurgical and neurological conditions. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or the Office of Continuing Medical Education at (516) 465-3CME (3263) if you have any questions. Regards,

Statement of Need: Positive patient outcomes are reflective of clinicians being aware of available treatment options and the optimal use of current technology. As new technologies are developed, it is imperative to keep physicians updated. Knowledge gaps exist regarding a lack of awareness for cutting- edge treatment, prevention and management of concussions, brain tumors and neurovascular disease. Attendees will be exposed to technical details regarding physics and devices for the treatment of patients with brain tumors including the benefits of SRS delivery and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging in neurosurgery. State-of-the-art treatment protocols, current clinical trial updates and post-care best practices will be reviewed and discussed.

Program Objectives: All North Shore-LIJ Health System CME activities are intended to improve patient care, safety and outcomes.

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

n EVALUATE treatment modalities for neurovascular disease including new evolving technologies to optimize patient outcomes.

n DEFINE indications for SBRT for RT and for surgery for patients having cancer metastatic to the spine.

n DESCRIBE the importance of imaging in the planning and surveillance of patients who are treated with SRS and CEA.

n REVIEW surgical, endovascular and medical modalities for neurovascular disease.

n EXPLAIN on-field evaluation and acute management of concussions.

n DEFINE orientation of clinical research in traumatic brain injury.

Target Audience: Neurosurgeons, Neurologists, Neuroradiologists

CME Accreditation: North Shore-LIJ Health System is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Credit Designation: North Shore-LIJ Health System designates this live activity for a maximum of 11 AMA PRA Category 1 credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Verification of Attendance Will be provided to all professionals attending the conference.
