- a multifunctional sports- and recreation complex to meet future demands posed by multiple user groups in a dense city environment at Jordal, Eastern Oslo.

Page 2: Nye Jordal Idrettspark

Jordal is quite uniquely situated in a green urban valley surrounded by a dense city fabric in Eastern Oslo. Today the site contains a park for recreation and a number of sport facilities built at different times throughout the last century. In the North-West corner lies the neglected Jordal Amfi. This venue was home to all ice hockey games in the Oslo Winter Olympic Games ‘52, and is partly preserved for its historical value.

The current site environment presents a number of challenges that are in conflict with future demands; most evidently an unsustainable ensemble composed by dilapidated facilities. Accordingly a re_generation of the de_generated sports and recreation multiplex is required. But in such a dense district there lies an architectural challenge in meeting the demands posed by multiple user groups; being sports associations, residential neighbours, the many children at local schools, and Vaalerenga Ice Hockey Club. Furthermore Jordal has been suggested tohouse parts of the Ice Hockey World Cup in 2018,

but is currently unsuitable for an event of such standard. In dialog with the user groups we have proposed a schematic master plan for a compressed multiplex at Jordal, and moreover develop one part of the architectural intervention to greater detail. The multiplex has a hybrid program including sports, activity and recreation. It has the capacity to accommodate both larger events, like those required by international competitions, as well as everyday activities of local citizens and broader sports associations. A new competition venue at Jordal means that the long and valuable tradition for Ice Sports in the area is preserved. The new arena meets the requirements posed by the International Olympic Committee, and has the capacity to house 6000 spectators. Our aim in this project is to demonstrate that architecture can help solve the apparently conflicting user demands in this dense city environment, ultimately meeting the many set requirements.

DAGENS SITUASJON

- dagens fasiliteter oppleves som en fysisk barriere

- "waste space" mellom fasiliteter og Hølandsgt

- lappeteppe av fasiliteter

- utkikkspunkter, akebakke og lekeplasser i nord-øst

- store trær, hovedsakelig i nord-øst

NYE GREP

- Jordal Amfi, et offentlig byrom. - historisk verneverdi, OL '52 - norsk issports krybbe - tilfredstiller ikke IOC's tribunekrav for en ny arena - nye muligheter, ref side 8.

- Nye fasiliteter på hver side, med takarealer direkte tilknyttet omkringliggende boligfelt.

- Utkikkspunkter, akebakke og lekeplasser er bevart.

- Store trær er bevart.

- Mer bruksareal enn i dagens situasjon.

- Et jordnært slør som binder landskap og fasiliteter sammen til et helhetlig skue.

The photograph of the physical model shows how the programme is integrated into the terrain at the site. Furthermore the facilities are bound together by a continous surface (in green) flowing along with the landscape.

The availability of public space in the future Oslo will be a premium. Therefore it is important that the roof surfaces will be accessible for the public - for activity and recreation. The roof surfaces are placed on the same height level as the surrounding neighbourhoods, making a stronger connection between the park and the residental environment. Along the the edges of the raised landscape are ramps that connect the lower- and upper level, which actively improve the links through the area.

We have chosen to keep and re-open the historical and partly preserved Jordal Amfi (photographs from 1950s) to yet again become a public resource for the local community. But the preserved stands of the old arena are too steep to meet the requirements of larger indoor events, like international ice hockey games. Therefore it is not possible to build a new arena around these stands. But for an outdoor venue these requirements are less strict. Because of their historical value we think they are worth preserving, as the well as the new outdoor space offers a range of possibilities mentioned later in the booklet.

ET 'JORDNÆRT' KONSEPT

Page 7: Nye Jordal Idrettspark

There are three main height levels at Jordal. The top level including the roofparks can be dedicated to recreation, the middle level to play and activity, and the bottom level to organized sports.

TRE NIVÅER MED FORSKJELLIGE FORMÅL

Page 8: Nye Jordal Idrettspark

The neglected Jordal Amfi (Olympic Ice Hockey venue from 1952, and home to Vaalerenga Ice Hockey) is partly preserved due to it’s historical value. It is the Amfi per say that are listed, meaning the concrete stands integrated into the landscape. Everything except from these can potentially be removed due to its neglected standard. But a new venue developed around the existing stands is not an option, because the stands are too steep (45 deg.) to meet today’s requirements of a national- and international sports venue. However, the requirements for an outdoor venue for public activity and recreation are less strict. The “new” space can be dedicated to outdoor recreation and activity, as an attractive public resource for the children and youth in the area.

Above is a scematic diagram of the flow of constituents on site. The main flow of spectators will be entering the FOH from the transport drop-off points and then proceeding to the venue seating or the other areas in the venue. There are 5 entrances/exits through the roof of the venue, which is on the same level as the main approach from Ensjø T-bane to the North. By having these entrances through the roof park the other areas of the Jordal Park will be fully accessible on match day.

The diagram to the right is based upon IOC-requirements of a comptetition venue with BOH/BOH standards.

The buffer space is an architectural conclusion of the interaction between the outdoor park and the indoor venue.

Page 15: Nye Jordal Idrettspark

The buffer space is where the outdoor recreation park interacts with the indoor sports venue. It is a space where the strict requirements of a sports venue meets the free flowing landscape. Through architecture we have tried to create a physical intervention for the interaction between these two distinct "forces". Topography and architecture clash together to create an architectural topography which is housing both the main concourse to the venue as well as recreational spaces and connectors between levels. The system works great as vertical cirlulation, connecting the three main levels.

The rheotomic architecture is working like two separated "universes" within the same footprint. The separated spaces never reveil themselves to each other, but they are physically shaping each other. One space can be dedicated for recreaten, while the other can work as the main concourse for the sports venue.

The recreational space will be mainly directed towards the outdoor park, but also have intermediate spaces where one can see into the arena. Rather than hiding away the activity that is happening within the venue, we have tried to create buffer spaces that tie together the outdoors and indoors.

ET BUFFERROM MELLOM PARK OG ARENAENS INDRE

Page 16: Nye Jordal Idrettspark

The buffer space is the space between the interior venue and the exterior park. The main approach of the site is from the North, which is 15 meters elevated in relation to the lower valley. The buffer space offers vertical circulation for both recreational users and sports facility users, between the top level/roof park and the lower level. The two spaces are separated, although they are acting within the same footprint. Along the way in the recreational part there are spaces where one can peek into the venue.
