Hi EveryoneElaine and I attended the 2010 OCA Nationals which was a great and successful show put on by the New England Olds Club (over 400 show cars showed up). We handed out over 400 brochures for our 2011 Nationals and many that we talked to said they were making their reservations when they returned home. The NEOC has passed on to us many good suggestions that we can use on hosting our OCA National from their experiences. At the Micke Grove car show Aug 29, 2010, the attending members will be asked to vote on the updates to our 1985 Bylaws (the update is posted on our club web site www.norcalolds.com).Starting with our October 9, 2010 club meeting, there will be monthly 2011 National meetings through July 2011.Hotel registration for our 2011 OCA Nationals at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, NV. can be made by calling 1-800-648-5080 and ask for group rate $69.00 per night for Oldsmobile National Car Show and Swap July 27, 2011 through July 30, 2011.

Your President, Dan Haggerty

Pete and Vera’s ‘49 Club Sedan by Pete Masters

Way back in 1948 after I graduated from high school, I got a job working for an Oldsmobile dealer in Southern California. I had a 1936 Olds 1 bought from this Olds dealer that I drove throughout high school. I think I paid about $50 for it. After a few months I found I really liked the cars and wanted a new 1949 Olds 88 Club Sedan, so I ordered one. After a few months A new 76 Club Sedan came into the dealership that hadbeenorderedforsomeoneelseandtheydidn’twantit.So,beingayoungkid,IsaidI’dtakeit.Ihadthiscarforseveralyearsandin19501hadtogointotheArmy.In 1951 1 married my high school sweetheart Vera and left the car with her while I went overseas to Japan and Korea. When I came home we drove the car for several years and had lots of enjoyment with it.

When I saw a similar car advertised in Missouri in 2004 1 told my wife, Vera, that I wanted it. I bought it sight unseen - a big mistake! The owner sent a few pictures and said it had a little rust. HA!! WhenIgotthecaritwasinbadshapewithrusteverywherewithnofloorpanortrunkfloor.SinceIhadrestoredseveralcarsIdecidedtokeepitandrestoreit.Everybolt and nut was rusted and I had to use my torch to cut a lot of them out. I ended up replacing as many parts as I could. I polished the stainless steel and had everything re-chromed.It was professionally repainted and upholstered to factory specs. with Seafoam Green exterior. Afteraboutfiveyearsofaground up restoration I am now enjoying our car. It brings back a lot of memo-ries.It’snotan88butitisnice to drive.

Top 3 pictures are before and after. Door hinge and post work, quarter panel and floorboard replace-ment was necessary. Pete did all welding required. Left and below is drivers side, one in work the other complete and displayed at a local show. This Olds was Seafoam Green metallic when it left the Kansas City factory in 1949. Now it is back to original color after wearing a darker green for an unknown number of years.

Top are 2 pictures of the rough interior as delivered to Pete. Above is the factory correct interior as finished looking like new.

Below is part of the front suspension dissassembled before it got cleaned painted and new components. This total “ground up”restoration took 5 years to complete.

Right; the original Big Six was complete but tired, dirty and rusty. Below after many painstaking hours, engine rebuilt, rewired, painted and detailed like new. Pete’s first ‘49 Olds Club Sedan was also a Big Six brand new!

IhadseenanOldsmobileconvertibleone-bayandIrecognizedtheseller’sIDfromaprevious transaction where I had sold him an Olds parts car. My curiosity got the better of me so I gave him a call to see why he was selling. He advised me he had been in an accident and was selling off most of his collection of cars. He said “you should buy this car Albert” I told him I would love to but I was in the middleofbuildingmy‘49OldsconvertibleandinstallinganEcotecengineinmywife’sNashMetropolitan.HetoldmehisreservepriceandIdecidedtopass.(itwasafair reserve price even then) I kept on eye on his auction and saw that it did not reach his reserve. So I gave him a call to ask him what he had planed to do next, re-list etc. He said to me “those fools Albert” it came within just a few dollars of selling. He told me that he had lowered the reserve by a third of his initial target. So I asked him “so you would take $X amount ofdollarsforthatcar?Hesaid“that’sright”andIreplied“sold,whencanIcomegetit“?KnowingwhatkindofoffersIhavehadonmy‘49theinvestmentwasmorethansound. HealsoshowedmealistofNOSpartsthathehadacquiredoverthepastcoupleofyears and he sold everything to me for a fraction of what he had purchased them for. Every part he had purchased was documented down to the penny and the date the part was bought and from who. (I think I had bid against him on some of that stuff) He had an entire wall of parts that had been removed from the car, each in a box with a label and instructions of where it went. Along with three photo albums showing every part before it came off. Wow, talk about meticulous. I was also given a polished Magnacharger Supercharger for the price of the mechanic removing the parts off my brothers SSR he was trading in. The upholstery that is in the car is the same it was sporting before disassembly includ-ing the leather seats. All it needed was a new top and carpeting. All the glass except the two wind wings are original, the tires even came with the car. Well worth the 11 months time off my other project.

I have always been a car guy starting back when my uncles would take me to car shows when I was about 8 years old. Back then we had a neighbor that had a son my age and we went to school together. We spent many summers learning to weld, do body work and paint. We did our bikes, model cars and even built a couple go karts and mini bikes from scratch. We were doing all that by age 12. Once I was in high school I entered into the vocational training center that now is know as CCOC. After that I became a journeyman in body, paint, and frame work and eventually went on to own a good sized shop in San Jose. Ican’trememberwhenIbecameinterestedinOldsmobile’sbutIrememberbeingvery impressed by the 442s that came through our neighbors body shop when I was a kid. I know I have always loved the history of the Rocket 88s and there impact on racing. I have had many cars over the years and have shown several of them across a few westernstatesbetweenhereandTexas.I’veshownPro-streetpickupsandVegastoCorvettes from wild to mild but my favorites are Olds converts and Chevy pick ups.AlbertEsquovillAlbert brought his car to the Invi-tational Portal Park Cadillac Show held in July in Cupertino and won the Director’s Award over the likes of classic Packards and Cadillacs. What an honor! That is Pete and Vera Masters ‘49 next to him and Larry Ewings ‘50 4 door 88 with John and Margi’s ‘51 98 on the end. 4 Oldsmobiles in a row! It was a fun day.

Albert Esquovill was willing to tackle this basket case project above which would scare most so called car guys away. He has, in a relatively short time, turned this pile of pieces into a show winning beauty. And he says modestly, it was an easy project because he was already building a ‘49 Olds Convertible and knew just what to do!

Below are photos he viewed on eBay and deciding to “go for it!”

Page 13: O l d s l e t er The - Member Car Slide Sho & Joanne Long, 16242 Melody Lane, Huntington Beach, CA 92649 714-840-4566. Nor Cal #2525, OCA #38989. Car:1950 DeLuxe 88 4 dr sedan, modified

Body gets sandblasted and primed.Below body now on frame.

Taking shape now with body together and white pearl paint applied. There are a few thing not seen in the photo but under the hood you’ll find an all aluminum GM 5.3 with a 4L60E automatic with a little boost from a supercharger and complete matching electronics all done by Albert himself. Again modestly saying “it was easy and the only way to go!”

Frame gets suspension parts and rear end installed.

Now home in Gilroy Albert gets started on the project

I lost a good buddy July 31st, Lenny Dold passed away at 68. We first met at Capachino High School in San Bruno then my family moved away in my second year and we lost contact. I restored my ‘50 Olds in the 80’s and at a show Lenny reap-pears here in San Jose and recognized me.He was a “Car Guy” all the way and even had a couple of ‘50 Oldsmobiles then. He had an 8 car garage with a special car in each one. He did many swap meets in the area and was a familiar face to many. He never joined our Olds Club but was very fa-miliar with the Rocket 88 as seen on right. That is him on the right about 1958. I believe that ‘50 88 303 engine found its way into his ‘40 Fordconvertible. He had a remarkablememory and rememberedwho had what car andwhere they lived all theway back to his childhood. He helped reconnect manypeople including me.Gonna’ miss you Lenny,In Loving Memory,Larry Ewing
