Byron Barker is a suit and tie kind of guy.It’s readily apparent as he greets me at the door while

wife of nearly 65 years Beth takes my jacket.Perhaps his penchant for ties is part of what makes

him a popular cashier at Monterey Recreation. It’s an endearing facet of his character, but not the one that drew them together many years ago.

“I saw her walk by the door of the commons room at UVic,” Byron said. “I pursued her.”

“Then I pursued him,” Beth laughs. “I never saw anybody after him. He was a lot of fun you know.”

Saturday they’ll celebrate Valentine’s with dinner at the Fireside Grill, where

Byron swears the “best chef in town” works. “The food is so good and I know what I’m eating,” Beth

says. They figure the getting ready for a night out should fill

the day. It’ll harken back to their early days of dating and marriage. They didn’t have a lot of cash and spent time walking and talking. When they were flush, they headed for nightclubs, for example one on View Street, where they lived for a time, stands out.

“We loved to dance. Loved swing music, we still do of course. We went to every jazz festival here, Dixieland jazz. We loved jitterbugging.”

They’ve danced their way through 65 years of marriage come Sept. 23 and feel keeping a marriage, and a happy one at that, requires only the basics.

“Respect. Respect for your mate’s wishes. We just love each other very much,” Beth says. “You have to have strong feelings to keep a marriage. I love going down the street with Byron’s hand in mine. That’ll always be there.”

“We have common interests,” Byron adds. The couple married on Sept. 23, 1950 when Beth was

23 and Byron 22, with one false start where she didn’t show up for a civil ceremony.

“I kicked myself for not going down there,” Beth says. “Once you’ve decided you’re getting married, you’re getting married.”

They agree today, that in hindsight, the second chance was more the wedding the couple sought.They wound up with a small service performed by a pastor friend and reception put on by the pastor and his wife the second go-round.

“Our spending money was $20 Byron’s dad gave us,” Beth laughs.

“We went to a nightclub outside of Port Alberni with my brother and his girlfriend,” Byron recalls.

They’ve since spent five decades living in or near Oak Bay but “sort of went around in a circle,” Beth says, travelling the Island from Cumberland to Tofino and back to Sooke, where Byron taught. He retired from Central junior (now middle school).

When he had a stroke more than a decade ago, a

daughter decided Byron needed some activities in his life. The family discovered Monterey Recreation Centre. “Six months later he was vice-president,” Beth recalls. He also served as president of the computer club. Between them they attend exercise class, belong to the singalong group, Note-ables, and the garden club.

Byron served as president of the seniors association and for the last dozen years he’s worked as a volunteer at the Fern Cafe, where he is to this day a cashier.

“I enjoy it – the people,” Byron says.“All the ladies love him,” interjects Beth, who also

volunteers at the cafe. Fun seems to seep into most everything this couple

does, even offering sage advice to the young. “Young people, they go into a marriage expecting too

much,” Beth says. “Until the end of time the wife is going to have to give a little.”

Pool offers off-the-wall activity

Aquatic wall climber extraordinaire Samuel Kessner earned the honour of being first up the new equipment at Oak Bay Rec.

The aquatic climbing wall officially opened on Family Day when Kessner clambered to the top and tore the ceremonial ribbon off.

“That really made his day,” said Dr. Jim Force, who first attempted the feat. Force earned first crack at the wall as president of the Rotary Club of Oak Bay that funded the $13,000 needed to get the “wish list” item for Recreation Oak Bay.

“(Climbing) is an activity where you have to be thoughtful. It builds their confidence and physical strength and ability,” said Force, who holds a PhD in education.

“It’s really self directed and makes failure OK,” he adds, noting that a fall means a splash and a return to the back of the line to try again. The lineup when it opened Feb. 9 indicates early success.

“I saw this huge lineup full of anticipation to get into the pool. They couldn’t wait to get in there,” said Janet Barclay, manager of recreation services. “It was really neat to see it in action … the mental and physical effort.”

For her the packed pool represented a small victory in the ongoing battle with “screen time” in the recreation world. It’s a battle Force feels Recreation Oak Bay, and the pool in particular, fights well.

“They have a combination of structured programs and the unstructured play,” Force said. “Play is a really important part of (a

child’s) development.” The wall is designed to maintain a little

mystery for the regular pool-user with a four-panel system that allows for alterations, changing up hand and foot holds. It’s just one of the considerations that went into the purchase.

“We are a smaller pool. It really fit well and doesn’t take up a lot of real estate,” Barclay said. “We have a range of ages and abilities and it’s challenging for everybody.”

Students top international competition

A group of University of Victoria business students are on top of the world.

MBA students Jesal Shah, Andrew Spence, Susan Laidlaw and Karin Feldkamp in the Sardul S. Gill Graduate School at the UVic Gustavson School of Business took first place in the Corporate Knights’ Business for a Better World case study competition at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

The students were tasked with modifying the sustainability practices of the Novartis pharmaceutical company in order to improve its ranking of 99th.

“There’s 12 metrics that they measure companies on: for example water consumption, waste, energy consumption, GHG emissions, gender diversity, things like that,” said Shah.

Saul Klein, dean of the Gustavson School of Business,

said the school is extremely proud of the students’ achievements, tackling the project outside of their regular studies.

“The idea that a group of MBA students can look at that and come up with a comprehensive set of solutions and recommendations to Novartis

to go forward is a wonderful opportunity for them and a great achievement,” he said.

“If there’s any competition that I’m really proud that our students

would win it would be this one.”Laidlaw said the balancing

of ambitious targets with pragmatic suggestions brought success to the team, along with the importance placed on sustainability at Gustavson.

“One of the factors coming from Gustavson is that sustainability is woven throughout all of our courses,” she said.

“Our strategy course has a sustainability aspect, even our accounting course has sustainability woven into it, so the fact that this was a sustainability-driven case actually fits right into the education we’ve received here.”

The competition earned a $10,000 prize for the students, but Klein said the reward for the school itself could be even greater.

“The World Economic Forum at Davos is a major event for global leaders everywhere. And to have our students be able to participate in that event and showcase the school is something that we couldn’t buy that kind of publicity,” said Klein. “It reflects something about who we are as a school, that we have a very strong focus on issues of sustainability, social responsibility, in a global context.”

Oak Bay takes province to task over deer controlChristine van ReeuwykNews Staff

Speakers called for a halt to the deer cull and Oak Bay council crafted a resolution to ask the province for more help with its deer issues on Monday night.

Among the seven speakers at the council meeting Feb. 10 were a pair of Saanich residents as well as visitors Liz White and Barry McKay of Animal Alliance Canada.

“There’s nothing new here,” McKay said of the rift in the community.

“Culling doesn’t work and sometimes has the paradoxical cycle of increased population,” he added.

Oak Bay resident speakers also called for a halt to the cull, including Kristy Kilpatrick who reiterated concerns over lack of signage, public education and a survey of the community. Kilpatrick added she feels those leading the pilot project are

presenting “false choices” between culling and doing nothing.

“It takes courage to stop things mid-way,” she said.

A supporter of the cull spoke last in the 20-minute public participation period. Andrew Stinson noted that deer was a hot topic during the election and the mayoral candidate in favour of a cull won the vote.

“I firmly believe Oak Bay has a mandate to carry out the cull,” he said. “Do not listen to the minority of Oak Bay.”

While the opponents of the cull were greeted with applause, Stinson’s comments were booed.

The crowd stayed to hear Oak Bay’s plan to ask the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities to take the province to task on its deer.

During the AVICC annual general meeting and convention, municipal governments gather to bring forward

issues and concerns from their individual communities through resolutions and debates.

Oak Bay will ask AVICC to request the province provide resources including conservation officers and urban wildlife biologists, and build necessary partnerships with Health Canada and local governments to address deer over population.

Coun. Michelle Kirby made the motion that asserts the resources, authority and responsibility to manage ungulate populations lies with the province. The preamble also says the combination of favourable habitats, no natural predators and the inability to allow hunting have contributed to expanding populations and exacerbated the problem of human-deer conflict in urban settings.

“This is a burden on our small municipality and we don’t have that

expertise,” said Kirby. “We can’t meet the needs of the community. … They’re downloading this responsibility and they need to own it.”

It’s a resolution that has been put forth before by communities such as Kimberley, Kirby found, but this includes an angle of creating partnerships and including Health Canada, which Oak Bay believes could allow for immunocontraception to be considered a viable option.

“I consider it a symbolic motion,” said Coun. Eric Zhelka “I don’t see this will result in any action. At least we can try.”

The deadline for resolutions to the AVICC is Feb. 23, and as per usual practice Oak Bay’s motion will go out to other councils in search of support.

All members of council plan to attend the AVICC annual general meeting and convention in Courtenay from April 10 to 12.

I have been an international homestay host in Victoria/Oak Bay, for 10 years. I have hosted dozens of International students from all over the globe.

These students come from cities where wildlife has all but been decimated. Our beautiful island has been selected by these students, in part, because of our green landscape and proximity to nature. They are in awe of the majestic animals that live in our midst and in our ocean. They are constantly taking photos and posting them on Facebook.

The Oak Bay deer posts have been seen in every country in the world, accompanied by the thankful comments of these students that they have been witness to such beauty.

Some of the international brochures even feature photographs of the urban deer, raccoons and eagles that we take for granted. One student from Korea told me that she would have to travel for three hours to see what we are blessed with in our own neighbourhood.

So I speak on behalf of them when I emphatically oppose an urban deer cull in Oak Bay. They have attended the anti-cull rallies, posted photos on Facebook and written me from Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, China and Taiwan to add their voices to the protest. Oak Bay council must be aware that this is a very negative and barbaric impression to give to our international visitors, and they have asked me to speak for them.

the 1956 “candy on the ruler race”, I would like to take issue with a letter to the editor entitled “Couple cancels stay”, printed in the Feb. 4 edition of the Oak Bay News.

If the letter writers are truly serious about making some kind of significant impact on the well-being of Oak Bay’s surplus deer population, maybe they would be willing to provide Oak Bay with the funds necessary to capture and transport all, or even some, of our deer to their neighbourhood.

Should they choose to do so, I’m sure the good people of Oak Bay would be more than happy to throw in a few surplus squirrels just to sweeten the bargain.

Blame it on the deerI must correct the two readers

who commented on dog poop in the school yards. That is not dog poop, it is deer feces. How do I know? The mayor said there is deer feces in the parks and yards, so why should I doubt the mayor?

Also being a senior, I have purchased bear spray and an air horn to accompany me on my nighttime walk to protect me from deer attacks, again as stated by the mayor. Before obtaining these items I was much too afraid to venture out after dark.

Unfounded fearsput health at risk

It was just about a year ago that B.C. had to deal with an outbreak of measles, with about 100 cases popping up in the Fraser Valley, and a few more scattered around the province.

This year, it’s Ontario’s turn.Though it’s still a common disease in

many areas of the Third World, the once common childhood ailment is rarely seen in Canada these days.

There is one reason for that: Vaccinations.

Complications from measles include ear or respiratory infections

like pneumonia, and in extreme cases, brain inflammation, blindness and deafness or, rarely, death.

Measles accounted for 500,000 deaths worldwide in the year 2000. Mass immunizations have drastically reduced that figure. By 2012, the number of measles deaths had been reduced by 80 per cent.

But the number of children that are being vaccinated is shrinking — many parents willing to risk their children’s health, and that of others, by refusing to have their kids vaccinated.

More than 15 years ago, a British doctor, Andrew Wakefield, suggested the measles vaccine, long proven safe, might cause autism. His study has long since been found not only inaccurate, but fraudulent.

Yet, with the help of the Internet, the scare continues to grow. Experts are concerned that people who refuse one vaccine may be spurning others, setting communities up for outbreaks of other dangerous diseases that are slower to propagate like diphtheria and whooping cough.

The typical course for common measles, especially with modern medicines, is relatively mild. But why put your child through even that, and put others at risk, over a misplaced fear of a simple vaccination?

While we don’t advocate mandatory vaccination, we do advocate relying on the advice of doctors and other reliable sources rather than misplaced faith in the veracity of the Internet. Remember, you don’t have to be an expert in anything to set up a website.

The B.C. government presented a cautious preview of the coming year with its speech from the throne Tuesday, announcing the formation of a rural advisory committee while lowering expectations for mining and natural gas exports.

Read by Lieutenant Governor Judith Guichon to begin the spring legislature session, the speech stated the appointed rural advisory committee would “provide independent and impartial advice on helping rural B.C. increase opportunities, manage growth and meet its full potential in communities big and small.”

The speech also made reference to a five-year action plan for the “agrifoods sector,” which has experienced $1 billion in growth in the past three years. An agrifood advisory committee will continue to work on a fish and seafood strategy as well.

Agriculture critic and Saanich South MLA Lana Popham, who is leading an opposition standing committee on agriculture and food, said the government’s reliance on closed-door advisory committees does little to foster public input.

“Agriculture is always a piecemeal project in B.C.,” Popham said. “There’s a committee here, some projects there, but it never relates to a long-term agricultural plan. … On the Saanich peninsula alone, the meat regulations haven’t been fixed since they were fiddled with in 2007. Farmers can’t process meat locally. We have the ability and interest to do more here, but that’s something I asked the minister to focus on a few years ago, and it hasn’t been done.”

Premier Christy Clark said the government will soon start construction on the $8 billion Site C hydroelectric dam and revamp the education system to fill an anticipated skills gap.

“We’re sticking to the plan, and we’ve been successful with that plan,” Clark told reporters. “I know it doesn’t make great headlines in the newspapers, but I don’t think we want to change so we can help you get a news story.”

The government will also allow a temporary tax hike on annual incomes of $150,000 or more to expire, resulting in $230 million less in annual tax revenue, said Rob Fleming, B.C. NDP MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake.

Red Barn tests Oak Bay market

A new player is stepping into the Oak Bay grocery market.

Red Barn has announced plans to open a location at 1933 Oak Bay Ave. in the fall.

“We thought Oak Bay would be a great market for the Red Barn brand to enter into,” said Russ Benwell, one of the owners of the franchise which has three stores in Saanich and

one in Colwood.“We’re very excited to be

coming into that area,we really don’t have anything near the downtown and we identified the Oak Bay area as a key place for our expansion,” said Benwell.

He said the Oak Bay store will be similar to the other Red Barn locations, with a sandwich bar, all of their smokehouse items, fresh produce and Red Barn’s famous bacon.

“We want to go back to the way it was in the older times where you could go into a small farm market or a smaller mom-and-pop shop and get all the

necessities for your dinner,” said Benwell. “We’re going to support the local movement where possible, Island raised, Island grown, Island made first.”

He expects to have the 6,000 square-foot market open by October and is anticipating upwards of 40 employees at the location.

“There’s been nothing new to that marketplace for a very long time,” said Benwell. “This is a complete new market to that Victoria-Oak Bay border.

“We’re really excited to be a new player in that market.”

Oak Bay’s monthly Embrace the Night walk will be stepping into the light this weekend.

The Embrace the Light walk will take place at 5 p.m. Saturday, starting from the Salish Sea sculpture in the Oak Bay Marina parking lot.

This month’s walk starts an hour earlier than usual in hopes of catching a glimpse of a beautiful sunset at the turnaround point on Beach Drive as well as to be back in

time for participants to still enjoy a romantic Valentine’s dinner.

“Embrace the Night started on Valentine’s night exactly one year ago,” said organizer Ron Carter. “We grew from a modest dozen participants to as many as 70-plus during the summer super moons.”

Saturday’s walk will head south along Beach Drive, duck into the Native Plant Garden across from the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, catching the sunset at

Shoal Bay and return back to the marina sometime just after 6 p.m.

Walkers are advised to wear comfortable footwear and prepare for all weather conditions. Personal reflectors will be handed out. Participants are also reminded to bring a little change if they wish to stop for a few refreshments after the walk.

B.C. income earners does nothing to help middle class families pay their bills or build prosperity,” Fleming said. “I think what we’re seeing is Christy Clark has done nothing but campaign since 2011, and people are finally seeing this government has no focus. Their ridiculous 2013 campaign slogan around LNG has come crashing down.”

As the government continues to await investment decisions for liquefied natural gas facilities, the speech notes that LNG “could create 100,000 jobs and the

revenues to eliminate our debt,” adding that exports are needed to maintain a gas industry that already employs 13,000 people.

Oak Bay-Gordon Head MLA and B.C. Green Andrew Weaver said the government failed to address MSP premium reform, a poverty reduction plan or a housing first strategy in the throne speech.

“There are plenty of things this government could and should be doing right now to actively strengthen and diversify our province,” Weaver said in a blog post.

“Without fail, whenever an idea surfaces

about how our government could address a pressing social or environmental issue, they trot out rhetoric about how the best way to address it is to grow our economy. The government has been saying for years that the economy is growing. Yet they continue to wait for it to start offering solutions to crises in funding for education, health care and social services.”

The speech referred to five new mines opening since 2011, but avoided mention of northeast coal mines that have closed due to low commodity prices that also threaten the operation of metal mines in B.C.

NDP leader John Horgan questioned

Clark’s intention to keep cutting “red tape,” an obsession of the B.C. Liberals since 2001. “They cut red tape at Mount Polley,” Horgan said of gaps in inspection that predated the collapse of the mine’s tailings dam last summer.

The government confirmed it is about to table a third straight balanced budget on Feb. 17, and hinted at new spending aimed at expanding the economy.

The government also plans to launch a new “medal of good citizenship” to recognize those who donate their time and money to improve their communities.

Singer brings some sparkle to UVic for Valentine’s

Vancouver soprano Lambroula Pappas will fill Farquhar Auditorium with songs of love for Valentine’s Day.

The Palm Court Light Orchestra conducted by Charles Job performs with the singer acclaimed for her charismatic presence, exquisite tone and sparkling coloratura.

Pappas is an audience favourite in opera, oratorio, concert and recital who has appeared with the symphonies of Vancouver, Victoria, Saskatoon, Prince George, Kamloops, Montreal, Quebec, London and Spokane.

In the world of opera, Pappas has performed in productions of Pacific Opera, Victoria; Montreal Opera; Belgium’s Opera de Wallonie; and France’s Opera d’Avignon and Opera Nice.

For her Feb. 14 appearance with the Palm Court Light Orchestra, Pappas will perform Bach/Gounod’s Ave Maria, Doretta’s aria from Puccini’s La Rondine, Handel’s Chio Pianga, Sigmund Romberg’s The Desert Song, Noel Coward’s Ziguener from Bitter Sweet and songs by Rudolf Friml and Johann Strauss.

The Orchestra, now in its 28th season, presents a variety of musical

treats including Josef Strauss’ waltz Gay Life, Leroy Anderson’s The Girl in Satin, Gabriel Pierre’s March of the Little Lead Soldiers and selections from the Broadway hit The Pajama Game.

Always entertaining, the Orchestra presents the novelty item The Whistling Bobby. Audiences will have to wait to see if the orchestra actually whistles.

Oak Bay Music Society brings love to Oak Bay with the two-day festival I (Heart) Composers just in time for Valentines Day.

Oak Bay explores new music during the two-day festival featuring four concerts of music composed and performed by the Victoria Composers Collective, mezzo-soprano Kristin Hoff of Montreal and pianist Daniel Brandes.

The concert on Feb. 14 at 1 p.m. features Victoria Composers Collective, New Music Program 1 with Program 2 at 4 p.m.

In the Feb. 15, 2 p.m. concert, Hoff performs solo opera Love Songs by Ana followed at 4 p.m. by pianist and composer Brandes performing works for piano by Taylan Susam, Dante Boon, Linda C. Smith and his own pieces.

The full size truck market is big business for automakers and a big deal for the businesses and people who depend on them. For almost five decades, the Ford F-150 has been the best selling truck, with little chance they will squander that crown soon. In fact, Ford finished 2014 with over 126,000 F-Series sold and that set a new record. RAM was the second best-selling vehicle with more than 88,000 sold. What has been happening, over the last few years, is a strong shift from General Motors to RAM in terms of establishing the second best-selling truck brand. The rise in RAM popularity traces back to a few key changes over the last several years, from muscular styling to class-leading interiors, a refined ride, plus engine and transmission advancements. New for the RAM line is a V6 turbocharged diesel in the 1500 or half-ton segment.LooksWhat RAM has been able to do is capture buyer’s imaginations with styling. The big and bold grille is even bigger than last models but has been integrated better into the front of the truck. Depending on the trim the grille finish can be chrome, painted or with a different insert. Be-hind the grille are “active shutters” that close at higher speeds to help send the wind around the vehicle to improve aerodynamic efficiency. There is now a longer side step, which helps reduce buffeting down the side of the trucks, also to aid in fuel economy. One option that makes life easier to live with is the $1,500 air suspension

that lowers for easier entry into the RAM or loading into the bed. This system also automatically lowers at speeds over 100 km/h reducing aerodynamic drag and, yet again, improving fuel econo-my. The opposite is true, at lower speeds and for off-road duties; the air suspension can be raised for better ground clearance. InsideToday’s modern truck is no longer just a vehicle for work; the level of refinement and luxury found in today’s rigs is something to behold. My test unit RAM 1500 LaRAMie Quad Cab 4X4 had a starting price of $51,595 but with a long list of extras from keyless entry and start, to full leather

seats, power moon roof and the larger 8.4-inch uConnect screen, the total came to just over $63,000. Not cheap, but man there is a lot of truck here. The interior is rich looking and feels first rate, from the buttons to the switches and materials covering the cabin. And the room is impressive for all passengers, front and back. In addition to the optional 8.4-inch Uconnect communications and entertainment screen, there is a standard large 7-inch screen behind the steering wheel for fully customizable instant information readouts. DriveThe biggest change for RAM includes the first diesel engine found in a light duty 1500 pickup truck. This is an Italian designed engine that has been used extensively in Europe in Jeep prod-

ucts like the Grand Cherokee. With 420 lb.-ft. or torque, this new “EcoDiesel” has the same out-put as Ford’s Ecoboost but not the same towing capacity. Rated at 9200 lbs. this truck will be perfect for buyers who want impressive fuel economy and good towing capacity; a balance of usability and thriftiness. This engine has not been rated yet for fuel economy but, thanks to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, the new EcoDiesel is going to get better numbers than the already class-leading gasoline V6 RAM. Having driven both the Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel and this RAM, I find the gearing and attitude of the RAM much more dynamic and actually inspiring to drive. In real world driving situations, this big luxurious truck can actually return fuel economy of 10L/100km without babying the engine.

started with dynamic exterior design, followed by class leading interior, then an 8-speed automatic and now

a Diesel. There is even an off-road ready RAM, just shown in Detroit, due to arrive called the Rebel. The RAM EcoDiesel has been selling very well and Chrysler claims they will put this truck up against the new aluminum F-150 for top dog in the fuel economy race. Good times to be looking for a truck.

Montebello, Quebec – The 2015 Subaru XV Crosstrek, Forester and Outback have no problem showing the snow who is the boss.They don’t even break a sweat if you’re commuting on surfaces that yield minimal traction or when putting the Subaru Sym-metrical AWD system through its paces on a winter off-road course.Let’s take a moment to talk about what make’s Subaru’s system so potent in the snow or on slippery surfaces. To start, Subaru designed its AWD system for perfect balance. The boxer engine, transmission, and differentials create a symmetrical layout left to right. This increases stability in every situation, as there is less weight transfer from side to side.Also, unlike the competitors, each vehicle is designed from the ground up to have a symmetri-cal AWD system as a standard feature. This makes the chassis and powertrain a harmonious match. Other competitors often start with a 2WD system and add AWD to the same chassis. It’s that kind of symmetry and engineering that instills confi-

dence in Subaru owners.More than 96 percent of Subaru vehicles sold in the last 10 years are still on the road today.The symmetry allows for predict-able and stable power delivery to each wheel, which was apparent in my test drive. With the traction control (VDC) on, you might experience a little bit of slippage if you go into a corner too hot.But within moments, you’ll have your back end back where it should be. Yes, it’s a little bit of a killjoy if you’re honing your skills to qualify for a driver’s seat in WRC, but for 99.9 percent of the owners, it’s a saving grace. Subaru’s active systems do their best to keep the driver and its passengers feeling relaxed and calm behind the wheel. Such was the case as the temperatures in Quebec plummeted below -15C. The frigid yet abundantly sunny day seemed like a perfect pair for taking the aforementioned Subarus for a test.Starting the day with the XV Crosstrek, which has an MSRP of $24,995, was a treat. This light-on-its-feet crossover has charm and character. Even with the available CVT transmission, it’s pleasant to drive and has the ingredients to make it a desirable all-season kind of vehicle.

Next came the Forester. At a starting MSRP of $25,995, this five-passenger Subaru has some great qualities. Its high seating position elevates the driver to have a great field of vision and the roomy interior and excellent cargo capacity off 974L (seats up), or 2,115 L (seats down) sure fits a lot of stuff inside.Lastly, and my favourite of the batch, was the all-new 2015 Outback ($27,995.)Maybe it’s because I love wagons, or the fact that there’s

an impressive 1,005 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats (2,075L with them folded), or that you can get it with a 6-speed manual, it’s a very well-balanced vehicle. Not to mention comfortable and quiet too.Both the Forester and Outback have a little something extra, too. The CVT equipped models feature X-Mode, a system that further helps you gain more traction in low traction envi-ronments, and comes with hill descent control.

All of these great cars come with 220 mm of ground clearance, meaning you can save your money on a snow shovel! Okay, that’s not entirely true, but that ground clearance allows you to trek deeper off the beaten path if that’s what you’re into. Throughout the day’s activities, whether it was engaging the X-Mode system while stopped in the middle of a snowy incline, or allowing the hill descent control to work its magic descending that same snowy mound, one thing is certain: Subaru builds a

strong product.One might argue that they’re a little behind when it comes to styling and aesthetics. Anyone who has purchased a car has faced an overwhelming list of features on the window sticker. Over the years, there have been some imaginative features offered right from the dealership. Here are five of the more ‘interesting” examples.

Lightning Rods Shifter – 1984 Oldsmobile Hurst: The perfect option for any automo-tive enthusiast who just can’t get enough levers, the Lightning Rods shifter walks a very strange line between a typical automatic and

a full ratchet shifter. As goofy as it may look, Lightning Rods have no problem putting the power to the ground.Swivel Seats – 1975 Chevrolet Laguna S3: It’s a wonder that more cars weren’t offered with swivelling seats, seeing as those troublesome stationary seats are always such a bother to get in and out of. While the swivel seat was designed for easy egress, an added benefit is that your vinyl won’t wear out nearly as quickly.Highway Hi-Fi record player – 1957 Chrysler 300: The Highway Hi-Fi did its best to

stop the needle scratching your precious 45s. Not only is there a generous amount of suspension built into the record player, but the pressure placed on the needle was known to prematurely wear records out.Rim Blow Steering Wheel – 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429: In a time before road rage, Ford, AMC, Chrysler, and GM all thought it would be much better to get rid of the pesky horn button and just have drivers squeeze the wheel. One major defect of the Rim Blow was shrinkage, which caused the horn to sound all the time!

‘His-and-Hers’ Shifter (Hurst

Dual/Gate) – 1969 Oldsmobile Hurst 442: One of the more sexist options to be offered on a car (to date), the Hurst Dual/Gate shifter was brand-ed as the “His and Hers” shifter. The theory behind the ‘his-and-hers’ shifter was women wouldn’t want to be bothered by changing gears while driving! Vikings end season with homestandCome show your support for

the University of Victoria Vikes this weekend as the school’s basketball squads conclude regular season play with the final four games to be played in McKinnon Gym.

The men’s and women’s teams are hoping for a strong finish to their seasons as the men enter their final weekend with a strong 14-7 record. Both the men and women play Trinity Western this weekend, with the women starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 followed by the men at 8 p.m. Saturday’s games start at 5 and 7 p.m. respectively.

It’s a big day for soccer fans Sunday, Feb. 15, when the Vikes men’s soccer team hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC for a pre-season exhibition matchup at UVic’s Centennial Stadium. Whitecaps players will be available for autographs and a

meet-and-greet with the public at the stadium from noon to 12:30 p.m. with kick-off at 2 p.m.

Vikes head coach Bruce Wilson – former Whitecap and national team captain – is in his 27th season at UVic. Pre-

The Vikes men’s field hockey team has a Valentine’s Day matchup against the United Brother’s Field Hockey team, with the game starting at 2 p.m. Feb. 14 at the UVic field hockey turf, beside McKinnon Gym.

While the Camosun Chargers basketball teams are out of town this weekend, the volleyball teams will be ready to hit the court against the College of the Rockies. The Friday, Feb. 13 games start with the women’s game at 6 p.m. with the men to follow. The women will start the action again Saturday at 10 a.m. Catch both days’ games at PISE.

As high school hoops wind down for the season, Oak Bay’s senior boys travel to St, Michaels University School for a 7:30 p.m. start Monday, Feb. 16. Wednesday, Feb. 18 brings the AA boys South Island playoffs to SMUS.

Looking forward to spring, Carnarvon has scheduled an additional tryout for U14B (2001 and 2002) softball Saturday, Feb. 14, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Oak Bay Rec Centre Indoor Sports Field.

“The first contractor will collapse the trap while the second contractor puts their full body weight on top of the deer and collapsed trap then holds the head still while the first contractor dispatches the deer using the bolt gun [This means applying a dead bolt gun to the head of the struggling deer with the intent of delivering maximum damage to the deer’s brain]. Contractors will promptly re-establish the trap from its collapsed state, open the gate and move the deer to a waiting covered truck. Contractors will use a black plastic bag to cover the head of the deer after the bolt gun has been used, to catch any blood while the deer is being taken to the truck. The deer must, under cover and in the back of the truck, away from public view and be bled within 15 minutes of euthanasia, to reduce meat spoilage. Blood must be collected in a container to maintain a clean work site. Once the deer is bled and the trap set up for daytime, the contractor will move on to the next trap location.” (December 2014-Oak Bay’s RFP for a deer cull contractor.)

There’s no place like home, which is why Abstract Developments has designed its new 14-unit condo in Cad-boro Bay, Element Beach Residences, with expansive living areas.

“The size and number of units is driven by the loca-tion,” said Abstract’s devel-opment and acquisitions manager Sam Ganong.

“We see a demand from downsizers, and the com-munity plans drive it too, across the street is a three-storey building, this fits in with the community.”

There are three layouts available: a one bed, one bath and den; a two bed, two bath; and a two bed, two bath with den. They range in square footage from 737 to 1,009, with seven units on the second floor and seven on the third floor.

The ground floor will be commercial space, either for office or retail, which will be subject to zoning.

The floor designs are based on creating a home feel rather than a condo with an open kitchen and living area that is flowing and expansive. Because

condo living areas often feel small with limited storage, Abstract tried to make it more functional by adding storage with custom mill-work throughout.

It’s a much different proj-ect than Abstract’s recently completed City Park town-homes overlooking Rudd Park on Whittier Avenue, just south of Boleskine Road.

Only one of those 14 units is still for sale.

“City Park townhouses are geared to entry-level buyers and young families, driven by its proximity to Uptown,

which has been successful,” Ganong said.

“Here in Caddy Bay, every-thing is already established.”

Keeping with Abstract’s flashy appeal are design schemes by Sandy Nygaard (Nygaard Interior Design) who has worked with Abstract before. Nygaard is leaned on to institute a brash, West Coast feel inside the home, using colour schemes, earth and wind.

The kitchens are loaded with slide-in gas ranges by Whirlpool, part of the stain-less steel appliance package.

Element condos will be sold in three stages. Phase 1 launched in September and sold out. The remain-ing nine units will sell in

Phases 2 and 3, with the next phase likely to launch this spring.

Five Greater Victoria youth charities have been awarded $84,800 from Coast Capital Savings.

Coast Capital Savings’ Vancouver Island Young Leaders Community Coun-cil awarded $490,000 in grants to 37 Van-couver Island youth-focused, not-for-profit organizations.

The grants support programs that help more than 13,000 youth in the region, according to a Coast Capital press release.

Among this year’s recipients in Victo-ria are:

n University of Victoria’s TeenWork Youth Employment program, $25,800;

n Community Living Victoria’s School and High School Project, $15,000;

n University of Victoria Student Society’s Suicide Prevention Training, $12,000;

n Victoria Brain Injury Society, $12,000;n KidSport Greater Victoria, $20,000.The grants, up to $30,000 each, are

awarded through a unique “for youth, by youth” process led by the Vancouver Island YLCC, one of three regional Coast Capital youth councils.

Each YLCC is made up of eight youth volunteer leaders from the community and Coast Capital savings, all 30 years old or younger.

Conor Pommerville, chair of the Van-couver Island Council, said each year the funding decisions prove challenging.

“The granting decisions this year were not easy,” Pommerville said.

“The council worked long and hard to determine which organizations should receive grants, and we believe that these 2014 recipients truly embody Coast Capital’s community promise to build a richer future for youth.”

Pommerville, 31, has been on the council for two years.

“The great thing was to be able to grant these organizations money to help them run their programs and to meet the people who run these pro-grams.

“It really hits home a lot more when you get to see it all in action.”

The local community investment pro-gram and the YLCCs were developed with the support and approval of the Coast Capital board of directors.

“The Coast Capital board of directors are excited with the work of our com-munity-based YLCCs and the thoughtful funding decisions they are making that support local not-for-profits,” said Coast Capital board member Bill Wellburn.

Youth groups earn credit union grantsDid you know?n Coast Capital Savings annually invests seven per cent of pre-tax profits in charitable programs and local initiatives to help strengthen the communities it serves. This amounted to $5.7 million in 2014, for a total of nearly $56 million since 2000.

n Coast Capital Savings is Canada’s second largest credit union, owned by its 512,000 members. It has branches in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Vancouver Island.

Victoria real estate sales rise slightly in JanuaryThe Victoria Real Estate

Board reports that 351 properties sold in the Victoria region this January, an increase of 2.6 per cent when compared to the 342 properties sold in the same month last year.

“We don’t expect to see big numbers in January. It’s

a slower month traditionally for real estate,” said Victoria Real Estate Board president Guy Crozier. “Even this slight increase after the 11.67 per cent year over year increase in sales we saw in 2014 shows the continued stability of our market. There’s also a good balance

of inventory available for sale, which will likely appeal to buyers as the spring season hits. Last month while we saw 10 single family homes sold for over a million dollars, there were also 95 homes sold for under $500,000.”

At the end of January there

were 3,283 active listings for sale on the Multiple Listing Service, a slight decrease from the 3,489 in January 2014. This continues a trend that started in mid-2013 where there are fewer listings in the market than there were in the same month of the year previous.

World adventures by air, land and sea !


Those readers who follow maritime news will likely have read last month about the rediscovery and identification of a sunken Second World War-era submarine cable repair ship off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii.

The USS Kailua made quite a few headlines when she was found 800 metres beneath the surface, resting largely intact despite the fact that she had been deliberately torpedoed and sunk by the American Navy in 1946.

What got less coverage was the fact that in the same immediate vicinity were two sunken Japanese submarines. One was a mini-sub and the other was one of the most remarkable advances in naval weaponry to come out of the Second World War: an I-400 class submarine.

Japan focused her wartime energies on the Pacific theatre, of course, and therefore was quite specialized in terms of what technology she advanced. Very little was spent on terrestrial combat, but air and naval innovations got a lot of attention.

There were only three I-400 class submarines ever created (I-400, I-401, I-402), and they were absolutely without par at the time.

At 122 metres in length and a surface displacement of 3,530 tons, they were the largest submarines on earth until the nuclear ballistic missile subs of the 1960s, and to this day remain the only submarines in history that could carry and launch airplanes.

The I-400 class were known as the Sentoku in Japan (meaning “special submarine”) and were conceived by the same man who designed the attack on Pearl Harbour, Japanese Combined Fleet Commander-in-Chief Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto.

Design and conceptualization of this hybrid weapon began one month after Pearl Harbour, in January 1942.

Construction began in 1943, and originally 18 were commissioned. The subs development was set back with the death of Admiral Yamamoto in April of that year when his plane was shot down over the Solomon Islands by the

Americans, and the commission was scaled back to 11, and then to only five by the end of the year.

Only three were completed in 1945, at which point the trajectory of the war had shifted

and materials and money were drying up. Japan was losing the conflict.

The concept behind the design was to have a vessel that was not only a submarine, but also an aircraft carrier.

Yamamoto wanted the Sentoku to be capable of terrorizing not just the west coast of North America, but the more heavily populated east coast

as well. In theory, it could emerge

suddenly from the sea, close to shore, and launch bombers which could attack the mainland.

It was so enormous that it carried a crew of 157 men and three Aichi M6A Seiran floatplane bombers, which were housed in a 35-metre long by three-metre diameter, water-tight hangar.

These aircraft were stored with their wings folded in, then rolled out through the enormous hangar door and launched by a 26-metre pneumatic catapult. All three planes could be launched in approximately 45 minutes.

In theory, the Seirans would then complete their bombing missions, return and land on the sea next to the submarine (they were, after all, float planes), then be picked up by an onboard hydraulic crane and returned to the sub, which would in turn disappear beneath the waves.

Perhaps even more remarkably, the Sentoku had a

range of 59,545 kilometres, and could travel around the world 1.5 times before needing to be refueled. This capacity remains unmatched to this day by any diesel-electric submarine.

It also had an extremely advanced rubberized coating designed to keep it relatively undetectable by Allied sonar.

So, why isn’t the I-400 class better known? Quite simply, it’s because they never had a chance to participate in the war.

I-400 and I-401 were on their way to their first engagement at the Ulithi Atoll in August 1945, but before they arrived the war ended with the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Their Seiran bombers were pushed into the sea to escape American capture, but the two subs were seized on Aug. 28, 1945 and returned to Sasebo. There a number of Japanese subs were sunk, including the I-402, but I-400 and I-401 were then sailed to Hawaii for the American Navy to examine.

A year later, they were deliberately torpedoed and sank to the bottom of the sea. There was great concern that the Soviets might get their hands on this technology and use it to their advantage in the nascent Cold War.

The remains of I-401 were found again in 2005 and those of the I-400 in August 2013, close to the location of the USS Kailua.

A single Seiran plane survives today in the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C., the only visible remnant of a unique piece of largely forgotten naval history.
