Catholic teaching tells us that human beings, created in the image and likeness of God, have by our very existence an inherent value, worth, and distinction. God is actually present in every person. Think about that. The

creator of the universe who is LOVE, and made us out of love for love is with us and in us - regardless of our race, nation, sex, origin, orientation, ability, vocation, culture, economic standing, or any other characteristic, trait, or label. Our dignity is the great equalizer - because all people have the same fundamental value, and the price tag is enormous. All human persons are both a reflection of God and a mirror of themselves, and thus we must honor and respect this dignity of human life as a divine gift. YOU are a DIVINE GIFT! Your life is a divine gift!

This is what Saint Irenaeus wanted to emphasize in his celebrated definition of humanity; “Man, living man (which includes men and women), is the glory of God”. Man has been given a sublime dignity, based on the intimate bond which unites him to his Creator: in man there shines forth a reflection of God himself. YOU are a REFLECTION of GOD! WHO IS JOHN HENRY NEWMAN? We are named after (soon to be

SAINT) JOHN HENRY NEWMAN. Living in the 19th Century, John Henry Newman is considered a giant in the fields of Theology, Philosophy and Education

who’s lectures and writings on those topics were considered significant contributions to both the Church and the academic world. Of particular importance were his essays “The Idea of the University” in which he observed that the Church and Institutions of Higher Education were driven by the same goal - the search for universal truth. His influence spread very quickly that shortly after his death, “Newman societies” started at Universities around the world to support and encourage Catholic students at secular institutions to see the link between their studies and their faith.

WHAT IS REDHAWK CATHOLIC?REDHAWK CATHOLIC is the short form of saying: the NEWMAN CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY AT MONTCLAIR STATE UNIVERSITY. Our “Newman Club” was first chartered as a club by the Student

Government Association at Montclair State University in 1950. In 1967, the Archdiocese of Newark bought the first house (894 Valley Road) which became the Newman Center - and expanded in 2014 with the purchase of the house next door (890 Valley Road) which has been dubbed “Newman II.” Both houses are open every day for prayer in our chapel; meetings and gathering spaces for our various programs; pastoral and psychological counseling and just as a place to hang out. Our mission is to help students grow in their faith through spiritual, social and community outreach programs. We do this through helping each other deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and the Catholic Church which he founded. We are sponsored, funded and operated by the ROMAN CATHOLIC ARCHDIOCESE OF NEWARK. We are chartered as a CLASS I ORGANIZATION OF THE STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION and are a recognized active partners with the University on many committees and initiatives. We have been named “Organization of the Year” by the MSU SGA twice in the last decade as well as being ranked #3 in a Nationwide survey of the top 50 Newman Centers.

encapsulates the core of your being. Our Catholic faith has much to say on this topic of our human identity and dignity. Please come to Newman Night on Tuesday, Oct. 8th to learn more about how God sees you. The implications of knowing your true identity in Him will make a remarkable difference in how you see yourself.

“There is a cacophony of voices calling out to you; there are a thousand influences pulling you this way and that. What’s the one necessary thing? It is to listen to the voice of Jesus as he tells you of his love and as he tells you who you are.” – Bishop Robert Barron.

What made you choose MSU? MSU chose me! It was the school where the Newman Catho-

lic Center was located and that was where I was asked to serve on staff. I have been here since February 2007.

What do you think you could improve on when it comes to practicing your faith life?I can always improve on seeing

the face of Christ in each person, regardless of how I feel about them.

What did you want to be when you were a kid? I wanted to be an artist.

Where do you see yourself in five years?I hope to be spending my days with family and friends, doing some traveling and leading a simpler life.

What is the best thing about Catholicism? The best thing is knowing that I can receive Jesus fully (Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity) in the Eucharist. Food and sustenance for my difficult journey here on earth.

What is something unexpected that hap-

pened to you over the summer?I finally realized I have little control over my life or the lives of others.

What is your favorite Sports team? The New York Giants

Least favorite?The New England Patriots

What is your favorite Halloween candy?Dark Chocolate with almonds

What inspired you to choose your major/mi-nor/career?After college I was excited to work in the retail and wholesale fashion business. It was challeng-ing, great money and prestigious. I did that for 13 years. Then I was home raising my daughter for 13 years. For me, being a Mom was the most fulfilling of all. This was also a time when I came back to my faith after being away for a long time. I was searching for truth and meaning in my life. Later on, I became involved in working as a vol-unteer in a healing ministry. I eventually accepted a job at the Newman Catholic Center serving MSU. It will actually be 13 years this coming spring! I have had both experiences of work-ing for self-gratification and acquiring material

things to working for others, often with little or no financial reward. The most joy has come from the last two… being a Mom, helping others and also working with the staff and students over the years at MSU. Giving of yourself changes you in ways you would never expect!

Was there a time you felt God let you down? Of course, many times. Often when I experienced loss or things didn’t work out the way I had want-ed them to go, I felt abandoned. This happened especially when I was not in relationship with God or in touch with my Catholic faith.

How did you get through it?I felt lost during these times and would often get angry at God. Sadly I would move further away from him. It was not until I had made the decision to seek him out on a more personal level that I realized he had never left me. He was just waiting for me to come back. Today I don’t hesitate to reach out as he is always there. Things may not turn out the way I hope, but I know he is right by my side to get me through it.

What is your favorite event at Newman?I love seeing everyone for our Sunday Mass on campus and socially I will have to say our infamous BBQ’s are the best!
