. On October 8, 2013, it was announced that Pope Francis had con-vened the Third Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops to be held in the Vatican October 5-19, 2014. Among the many situations enumerated in the preparatory document as demanding the Church’s attention and pastoral care are:
the widespread practice of cohabitation
same-sex unions (which are then permitted to adopt children)
mixed or inter-religious marriages
the single parent family
a culture of non-commitment and a presumption of the marriage bond as temporary
forms of feminism hostile to the Church
migration and the reformulation of the concept of family
relativist pluralism in the conception of marriage
the influence of the media on popular culture in its understanding of marriage and family
underlying trends of thought trends of thought in legislative pro-posals which devalue the permanence and faithfulness of the marriage covenant
an increase in the practice of surrogate motherhood
new interpretations of what is considered a human right
and a weakening or abandonment of faith in the sacramentality of marriage and the healing power of the Sacrament of Penance
The Liturgy Corner
The (opening) greetings signify Christ’s presence to the
gathered community, and with the people’s response
(“And with our spirit”) the “mystery of the Church
gathered together is made manifest” (GIRM, 50).
