Halakhic Corner Q: What is the proper way to fulfill the Mitzvah of sitting in the Sukkah? A: Rav Yoel Sirkis, in his early 17th century commentary on the Tur, entitled Bayit Chadash (commonly known as the Bach) writes that a person should make it a point when sitting in the Sukkah to remember that he or she is doing so because G-d took the Jewish people out of Egypt and provided them with a protective cloud of glory during their sojourns in the desert. While it is important to always have in mind when performing any Mitzvah that one is doing so for the sake of G-d, it is especially important when sitting in the Sukkah as the Torah explicitly states, “So that your generations will know that I caused the Children of Israel to dwell in booths when I took them from the land of Egypt”. Since the Torah puts a special emphasis on knowing and understanding the reason behind the Mitzvah of Sukkah, special care must be taken to remember this fact while sitting in the Sukkah. If a person does not have the proper intentions in mind, Rabbi Yosef ben Meir Teomim in his 18th century work, Pri Migadim, posits that one has nonetheless fulfilled the mitzvah of Sukkah. The Mishnah Berurah adopts this opinion. Interestingly, Rabbi Yaakov Ettlinger, one of the great German Rabbis of the 19th century, in his Sefer on the laws of Sukkah entitled, Bikkurie Yaakov, rules that since the Torah has put special emphasis on remembering the reason behind Mitzvah, if one does not do soone has not fulfilled the Mitzvah. It is therefore critical to take a moment during the first meal on Sukkot to pause and think about why one is sitting in the Sukkah.

FROM YICC’S SEFER HA’MINHAGIM SUKKOT 1. On the first two nights of Sukkot and on Shabbat Hol

HaMoed we do not say Kiddush in the Shul after Maariv.

2. On the first two days of Sukkot, Hoshanot are recited after the repetition of the Musaf before Kaddish Titkabel.

3. During Hol HaMoed and Hoshana Rabbah, Hoshanot are recited immediately after Hallel.

4. One Sefer Torah is taken out of the Aron and held on the north side of the middle Bima throughout the Hoshanot. The Aron and Parochet are left open during the recitation of Hoshanot.

5. At the end of the Hoshanot the Hazan puts down his Daled Minim right before he says the verse of L'Ma'an Da'at. At this juncture the Sefer Torah is returned to the Aron. When the Torah is in the Aron the Hazan says L'Ma'n Da'at followed by Kaddish Titkabel.

6. On Hol HaMoed and Hoshana Rabba if everyone in the Shul has a set of Daled Minim and there is no Avel present, then the Sefer Torah is taken out of the Aron and placed on the Shulchan while everyone does the Hakafa around the Shulchan.

7. An Avel does not do Hakafot on Chol HaMoed and Hoshana Rabba but does Hakafot on the first two days. On Hol HaMoed and Hoshana Rabba he should hold the Torah at the Bima. If there is more than one mourner present, the other mourners just stand in their place and do not do the Hakafot.

SHABBAT CHOL HAMOED 1. On Friday night of Shabbat Hol HaMoed Bameh

Madlikin is not recited and Kabbalat Shabbat begins with Mizmor Shir Shel Shabbat.

2. On Shabbat Hol HaMoed, we do Hoshanot after Musaf. We only open the Aron, but we do not take out a Sefer Torah.

3. Kohelet is read on Shabbat Hol HaMoed. Even if a Klaf is used, no Brachot are said.

4. When Kohelet is read, we recite Anim Zemirot and Shir Shel Yom before reading Kohelet.

5. On Shabbat Hol HaMoed in Musaf, the Hazan does not say Adir Adirenu after Kedusha.

6. We do not say Kah Keli on Shabbat Chol HaMoed.

PLEASE REDEEM YOUR PLEDGES FROM YOM KIPPUR Please remember that you can pay your Kol Nidrei Pledge
