October 17, 2016

Dear Prospective Blake Parents and Students, We are delighted you are joining us tonight for the annual Northeast Consortium (NEC) Open House program at James Hubert Blake High School. Tonight presents an opportunity for you to get a glimpse of our school and all we have to offer. Since Blake opened its doors in 1998, our evolving community of students, staff, and parents has been a source of tremendous pride. We enjoy sharing the growth and accomplishments of our academic, signature, athletic and career readiness programs. There are many reasons why Blake has been the most often requested high school in the Northeast Consortium Choice Process for the majority of the years this process has been in place. In short, it begins and ends with the quality of our total academic program. Parents comment on the tremendous results of our Ninth Grade Academy, which features supports that help to ease both the academic and social transitions from middle school to high school. Our course offerings include diverse electives and the most extensive Advanced Placement selection in the Northeast Consortium, elements that provide students opportunities that in many cases are unique to the Blake experience. Our career readiness model helps students identify and focus on career goals and complete “capstone” experiences that synthesize the learning in many classes. A tour of our one-lunch period is a model of how to “lunch and learn”, with one-on-one teacher-student work, clubs and activities, and teacher professional development. While we are in our nineteenth year as a school, visitors frequently comment on how new our facility looks, which we attribute to the great pride our students, staff and community take in all that happens at James Hubert Blake High School. As you tour this evening, we hope you will come away impressed by the contagious enthusiasm of our school community. Our signature program in the arts and humanities, for which we are known countywide, will surely dazzle you. We are confident you will be equally impressed by our offerings in math, science, technology and the richness of our overall school program and environment. Please talk to our students- they are our very best ambassadors and are unfailingly candid about their experiences here. Also, take the time to speak with parents of Blake students within your community. They, too, will relate personal reasons why Blake is a school with high expectations for all students. We hope that you enjoy your tour and will take the time to ask questions of the many students and staff who are here this evening. We have made a conscious effort to maximize your time seeing and experiencing our program. At the end of the open house, we would appreciate your filling out the short feedback form to let us know if this program met your needs and expectations. Have a wonderful evening. We hope to see you next year as James Hubert Blake High School students and parents.

Sincerely,

Christopher S. Berry Principal

Elizabeth H. Yargici Signature Program Coordinator

The mission of the Blake High School Instrumental Music Ensembles is to make a positive difference in the lives of the members by providing musical and visual experiences and performances, and to assist them in achieving their potential as they develop confidence, cooperation, leadership, responsibility and high standards of excellence and character.

The Roaring Bengals Marching Band and Bengal Guard have a rich history of outstanding performances, and has quickly become one of the finest marching units in the DC Metro area. In the past, our band has been honored by participating in the 71st Annual Nokia Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, Walt Disney World, the New York St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the NATO Parade of Nations in Virginia Beach, and the 62nd Annual Konica Minolta Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Florida. The band is very excited to have been invited back to New Orleans to perform at halftime of the 83rd Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl. Every performance has brought great credit to our school, and will continue in the years to come.

James Hubert Blake High School’s Choral Music Department has consistently provided sound instruction, challenging repertoire, and a nurturing learning environment throughout the program’s history. We currently offer three levels of choruses as well as a Musical Theatre class. A number of our singers are selected to participate in the Montgomery County Youth Chorus and the Maryland All-State Chorus each year. Our choirs consistently receive excellent and superior ratings at both county and state festivals. Additionally, our choirs have been invited to perform at The Kennedy Center and have recently participated in festivals in Alexandria, Myrtle Beach and Walt Disney World.
