The Lakes Free Range Egg Company

David: “Some time ago, I had the opportunity to buy a piece of land just across the road of our 1st packing station and when the time was right, we decided to extend our current business by installing a new packing station. This was of course not an overnight job! We talked to several suppliers not only for the equipment in the packing station, but also for our building and facilities. In our philosophy of supplying the best free range eggs, our leading edge of range enrichment for our hens, only a modern, sustainable, carbon neutral and overall environmental friendly packing station fitted in our business model. Our packing station is located in Penrith which is a small community with <15000> inhabitants. We had ambitions to create an

The Lakes Free Range Egg Company located at Penrith, Cumbria is one of the leading and most inspiring free range egg suppliers in Great Britain. With more than 50 local free range and organic egg suppliers and a state of the art environmentally friendly building, the Free Range Egg Company supplies a large proportion of the McDonald’s egg requirement in Great Britain. An Omnia 330 FT with Moba Robotics was installed in July 2011 at “The Lakes”. After 3 months of operation we interviewed owner David Brass, Managing Director Mark Gaskin and Factory Manager Maria Harris.

environmentally friendly and sustainable packing station, we knew that we would become one of the bigger industries here in Penrith and we wanted to make sure that we would be welcomed by the local community as well fit in to the beautiful landscape of the Lake District. We had detailed discussions with our local community and fine-tuned our plans. With local contractors we started our project. Mark: “If you look at our packing station you can see that we tried to integrate the Penrith look and feel in our facility. When you see the front of our plant you have no idea that behind it we run a fully equipped egg packing station. I am pleased that we chose this

“99,8% net efficiency with Moba Omnia”

arrangement, not only for myself but also our employees, who are proud to work at such an environmental friendly and leading edge facility.”

David: “We try to be industry leading and innovative in everything we do. For instance our flocks of hens show some of the lowest mortality and highest egg production of any UK Free Range flocks. I am convinced this is thanks to our system where we use more trees and bushes in the range where the hens are roaming during the day. A more natural environment for animals pays off. When designing a packing station also top level equipment is needed. You want to challenge the team in the packing station and by giving

3

them the most modern tools and equipment you will get the best results, both from people and equipment. Our team is very proud to work in this state of the art environment.”

Maria: “At first I was a little wary of the Moba equipment as it offers so many functions. I was used to working with an older type grader with much less features and that worked fine for me. But after a week of Omnia training at the training centre in Barneveld, the Netherlands, I became more confident and saw the benefits that this machine had to offer. I’ve been running the machine now for 3 months and I like how it operates. It seems like the machine thinks for us and is designed to get more production efficiency than any

other machine I’ve worked with before.”Maria walks to the small desk besides the machine with almost no paperwork and says: “I love the traceability!! With so many farms and a wide variety of different products, keeping track of all eggs was a paper nightmare with the previous machine. The job that cost me over 2 hours per day is now completely taken care of by the Omnia itself. All info nicely stored in comprehensive overviews - brilliant!!

Mark: “Our staff are eager to work with the Moba Omnia as they learn more every day. Every operator knows the machine basics, but the trick is to get even more out of this machine than we have already achieved.” Mark points at the MMI screen and says: ”As you can see, todays average shows that we are running a 98.9 grade A percentage. A great compliment to both the farm management for their exceptional egg quality as well as the Omnia that handles these eggs with its famous individual egg handling. Not only has the Moba Omnia met our expectations, the Autopack equipment and service is well organised. We have a CP12 Case Packer, the Case-Display-Combi MR 30 Case Packer MR 10. All three Autopack machines handle the eggs with the utmost care. One

operator can easily control both MR Robots and at the same time assist the manually packing process from other Omnia packing lanes where smaller product runs are being produced. The set-up of the machine operation is well thought out. The packing station is designed in such a way that we can run the operation as efficiently as possible, with allowance made for growing our business in the future.”

David Brass

With the installation of the Moba Robotics we knew that we had purchased relatively new types of equipment and we had a lot of suppliers to choose from. Moba offers one stop shopping, an integrated solution and a long term service commitment, even through their own office in the U.K. All these things were taken into account while choosing for Moba Robotics. If in the future we can grade more eggs for different customers, we need to make sure that not only the grader but also the packing equipment can grow with us. The Moba Robotics series offer this possibility.

1 MR 50 depalletises pallets with eggs. The

stacks are placed on the loader of the egg

grader. Since the robot locates each layer there

is no need for pre-aligning the pallets before

processing with all possible risk of creating

cracks.

2 Moba Omnia FT graders are the centre of the

grading operation. With its product oriented

setup the Omnia database is the link between

the logistic and information flows. The

industry confirms that Moba Omnia graders

produce 2% more grade A thanks to the

individual egg handling principle.

3 Moba Contiflow system links the grader to

further downstream automation. Upto 4

functions can be included such as buffer

The sophisticated pick up head is capable

of handling a large variety of different packs

in the most gentle way.

MR 60. The MR 40 is a tray palletizing robot that

places offgrades, smalls and large-volume-sales

onto pallets. It can handle both pulp and plastic

trays, even simultaneously when required. The

MR 60 scans cases or crates based on for example

barcodes and loads a maximum of 4 pallet

Moba 2500 valuable in serving niche market

Can you tell us something about your company?Evert Jan: “My grandfather once started a poultry company in the village of Voorthuizen. My father, Wim, subsequently took over the company from him years ago. In those days I worked as a sales representative for a wholesaler in animal feed. Several years ago, I decided to give up my job and join my father in running the family business. My father now manages the poultry division and my wife and I manage the egg trade.

How many eggs are we talking about? “The company has 75,000 hens, divided over 4 stables and clustered according to 3 age groups. The eggs produced by hens with the ideal age for laying consumer-grade eggs are sorted and packaged, and in the afternoon I deliver them personally to our customers. The remaining eggs are used for industrial purposes. Our customers are mainly small

Smart business concept based on constant high quality

The Van de Vis family from Holland always does things a little different. In a world in which everyone seems to pursue quantity, their focus is on quality. They combine a smart business concept with the right resources and tools and a much higher than average measure of passion. Moba talked to Evert Jan and Marjan van de Vis about their family enterprise, a poultry/egg production company.

enterprises such as restaurants, poultry stores, food stores and market vendors, all of whom in turn rely on providing high quality. Considering my career as a sales representative, it somehow feels natural to generate new business and to keep our customers loyal to us. The thought of doing nothing else but work on the premises and not getting out every now and then makes me restless. I love being among people. “

What makes your company so special?“The great thing about this company is that we are completely autonomous and manage everything ourselves. The hens in the stables are consistently given the same feed, and the eggs used for trade are always from hens in the ideal age group. This guarantees a constant high quality, which, for customers who depend on taste, such as restaurants, market vendors and pancake houses, is a vital issue. “

Which machines do you use?We have a Mopack 100 that gets the eggs ready for shipment, and about a year ago we invested in a new Moba 2500 to sort our products. The first thing we noticed about the machine was how quiet it was. We had become used to the daily racket created by our old machine. Obviously, the silent mode in which the Moba 2500 operates proved to be a breath of fresh air. And what’s more, the exceptionally high level of egg handling it offers fits the high standards pursued by us. The machine has a modular design, which means that we can always extend our current 4 conveyor belts to, say, 6 belts at some point in the future if required. Moba even constructed a special table for us that stands between the sorting machine and the farm packer, which is ideal. Switching between the two is now very easy. It enables us to operate all equipment with 2 persons most of the time, and with 3 persons when a stable progresses towards the end of a laying period, which is when the hens quite simply produce a larger number of grade B eggs. ”

What are your plans for the future?“We are carefully investigating the possibilities of expansion, but the one thing that distinguishes us from others is and will remain the high quality of our eggs. Our current machinery gets the job done to perfection. We are completely satisfied for now. “

Moba implements 100 robots in less than 2 years

Autopack widely accepted by egg industry

AutopackThe automatic handling of all kinds of egg trays and cartons is becoming more and more important in todays egg packing stations. Various products, launched under the name “Autopack” by Moba, are designed for handling packed eggs in the trajectories before and after an egg grading machine. Besides labor saving, customers are automating these processes more and more for quality and logistic reasons. With increasing capacities of egg graders, the need for packing higher volumes of eggs into cases with a constant reliable quality is becoming more important by the day. And not only case packing but all processes of loading and unloading trays, consumer packs, cases, displays, shippers, crates and pallets are facing the same interest for further automation. Moba embraced this challenge and since many years serious investments have been made in research and development.

Over the years many hundreds of different Autopack projects are installed worldwide. Moba supplied over 200 Autopack units to projects that can be labeled as “Total

“Remarkable” says mr. Katsumi Masumoto of Yaskawa headquarters in Japan. “In 18 months Moba integrated 100 robots in their projects. This immediately makes them one of the bigger integrators in Europe and certainly the nr. 1 in the egg market.”

Moba roboticsThe latest Autopack innovation is the Moba Robotics series. A complete series of robot applications is designed for all various tasks in the egg business. Customers do appreciate the flexibility of these products. An important factor is the generic software. Moving a robot arm from A to B is something that everybody can do. Moba is striving after a flexible system that is able to handle a wide variety of products in our highly specialized niche market. Examples like shared pack libraries, uniform user interfaces and runtime adaptable robotgrippers give a totally different dimension to the Moba Robotics series. The generic software is made in such a way that long term service can be guaranteed and future upgrades are always possible. And this without the need of total reprogramming all functions!

Adriaan Goede b.v. invests in first egg breaker of new OVOMASTER generationNew Moba Coenraadts egg breaking system introduced on Eurotier

Moba Coenraadts, the latest member of the Moba Group, is proud to present a complete new generation of egg breakers. Although the name is the same, cooperation between mechatronical teams resulted in significant innovations. With the capacity of 110,000 eggs/hour (305 cases/hour) this breaker excels in robustness and reliability. Innovative crackers of the Ovomaster result in higher yield and the hygienic concept of the system results in the lowest possible bacterial load of the egg products. Improved control features and optimal visibility of critical processes complete the package that will be on display at the Eurotier show in Hannover.
