Natoma Corporation, Norton, Kansas, is celebrating its 30th an-niversary and has recently installed a new Kiwa KH-45 horizontal machining center.

The precision CNC machining firm, which is ISO and AS 9100 certified (and ITAR compliant), offers contract manufacturing to various industries including; avion-ics; medical; defense and commu-nications.

Natoma offers CNC milling, turning (including Swiss), light assembly and packaging. It also has easy access to all finishing processes.

The new HMC (purchased from McClain Tool & Technol-ogy), was needed to keep up with customer demand and the com-pany’s growth.

“We have purchased numerous pieces of equipment from McClain in the past and have been very pleased with the equipment and the service provided,” stated Gail Boller, owner and founder.

The new Kiwa KH-45 features 400mm x 400mm dual pallets, 120 tools, a 15,000-rpm spindle, four axis operation and Fanuc controls.

Natoma, which has a 70,000-sq.-ft. facility, has 28 pieces of CNC machining equip-ment. Its crew of 60 work with a wide range of materials including: plastics; aluminum; stainless steel; hardened stainless steel, tool steels; carbon steel; titanium; brass; brylium; copper; bronze and exotic alloys.

The Mid-America Chapter of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) held a golf outing to benefit its scholarship fund on October 4th at the Tiffany Greens Golf Club in Kansas City, Missouri. Over 90 golfers participated in the event.

Mid-America MSCI Holds Scholarship Golf Outing

Prizes were awarded to several teams and a buffet dinner followed the tournament.

The chapter awards several college scholarships each year to children of MSCI member employ-ees. In 2012 the chapter distributed

The first speaker was Rohina Behrmann of Missouri’s Full Employment Council. She spoke about the numerous programs and opportunities available to NTMA member firms.

The second speaker was Brad Burch from Deco-Prism. He discussed about how process and inventory systems management can save companies time and money.

The final speaker was Franklin Partners’ Omar Nashashibi, the NTMA’s government relations firm. He updated the group on events in Washington D.C. regarding legislation and regulations impacting manufacturing. These included regulations, tax reform and workforce development. He also covered the current status of national and local political campaigns.

“He has erected a multitude of new offices and sent hither swarms of officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.”

If that sounds a little old- fash-ioned, it’s because it’s from the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. The “He,” of course, is the King of England, King George III.

This phrase was repeated recently by one of the speakers at a Manufac-turing Summit, held at United Tech-nical Industries, Inc., Lee’s Summit, MO, and hosted by the Metal Service Center Institute (MSCI). (See page 38)

The object was to discuss “Clos-ing the Divide Between, Jobs, Policy and Growth,” and to mobilize the metals industry around the issues that threaten the long-term outlook for manufacturing.

Several panelists were there to give opinions and hear suggestions on growing the economy, regardless of who is in the White House in 2013.

Not surprising, they felt the main things holding back expansions were political uncertainties with the threat of higher taxes, health care confusion, a lack of qualified workers and a mass of new federal regulations in the past few years.

The person quoting the Declara-tion of Independence was referring to OSHA and EPA regulations and the seeming reluctance of either the in-spectors or the Dept. of Labor to work with the manufacturers, especially the smaller ones. Larger companies sometimes have a lawyer present dur-ing an inspection, but the little shops just have to write the check. OSHA is both judge and jury, they said.

Among the examples of fines not fitting the violation: A company had a

painting department and the paint-ers always checked out the paint with the sprayers before starting the line. A worker had opened a can of paint, ran a test, and stepped away for a few minutes. An OSHA inspector happened to be in the plant, saw an open can of paint, and immediately imposed a $5,000 fine.

Another company had been working closely with its state safety group and was proud of its spotless record over a 10-year pe-riod. When a government inspector found a new hose that had been installed improperly, the fine was set at $50,000, with no regard for the firm’s history of safety.

Stories like these are nothing new, of course. They’ve been go-ing on ever since the Occupational Safety and Health Act was passed

in 1970 and newly trained inspectors had often never been in a machine shop or any production plant.

We recall one inspector who said he had been a jewelry salesman just two weeks prior to his appointment and he was entering a machine shop for the first time. But, with his new govern-ment credentials he was very confident he knew what to find. Generally, over the years, most manufacturers made their peace with the government and understood that surprise visits by the inspectors were a fact of life. They recognized the need for a safe environ-ment, both in the plant and outside. After all, their families and friends often worked with these machines and chemicals, and their homes were in the area, too.

They also invested thousands of dollars to meet the continually in-creasing demands of both OSHA and the EPA and are justly proud of their clean plants and safety records. Unfor-tunately, the situation seems to have changed. The economic downturn and unrealistic regulations appear to be causing manufacturers, especially the smaller shops, a great deal of extra worry and expense. Naturally, this can translate into a reluctance by the own-ers to increase employment or to trust the government to do the right thing, even if the company is ready to start growing again.

Also, since some of the regulations start above 100 employees, or 50 or 10, an employer might question why he would want to add those few ad-ditional workers that could put his firm in a more “expensive” category with greater government oversight?

If the government is truly count-ing on manufacturing to lead the way in creating employment opportunities, as it says it is, those in the regulatory departments haven’t gotten the mes-sage, yet.

As we’ve mentioned before, part of the problem is that few people in-volved in policing regulations, espe-cially in manufacturing, have had any experience in businesses, let alone in

producing actual goods. Then too, as the number of regulations has in-

creased and the enforcing staff has expanded, the budget sometimes remains the same. This may be why a number of companies, rightly or wrongly, feel a visit by the EPA or OSHA means an automatic fine of some sort. This certainly doesn’t make for a good partner-ship.

The MSCI held a number of these Manufacturing Summits across the country, giving company owners and managers a chance to discuss their problems and offering ideas that can be passed on to the appropriate governmental agencies, committees and congressmen.

As the government becomes increasingly in-volved in your business, it’s especially important that you remain an active member of whatever association or society represents your industry at both the state and federal level...and voice your concerns and sugges-tions.

In the end, the business of business is no longer just business, as they once used to say. No matter how good their intentions might be, we can’t assume the regulators will always do the right thing, We also can’t assume our representatives will look out for us. It’s up to you.


The Mid-America chapter of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) held its 2012 Manufacturing Summit “Closing the Divide Between Jobs, Policy and Growth” at Unitech in Lee’s Summit, Missouri on September 20th.

The event, which was attended by 150 members and their customers, was moderated by MSCI president and CEO M. Robert Weidner, III, and hosted by MSCI chapter president Gregory Otto, general manager of the Iowa market for Ryerson, Inc.

Participants included: Richard Robinson, president of Norfolk Iron and Metal Company; John Sunderman, president of Owen Industries, Inc.; and Craig Schroer, president and CEO of United Technical Industries.

Political candidates attending the event were: U.S. Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO 2nd District) and Jacob Turk, Republican candidate for the U.S. House, Missouri’s 5th district.

The summit was an opportunity for national and local manufacturing leaders, employees and political candidates to discuss the most pressing issues facing the manufacturing and metal services sectors. “Manufacturing is vital to

our economy. If we want to see job growth in this country, candidates and incumbants must understand that the industry’s needs aren’t isolated to one or two key issues,” said Otto. He went on to explain that trade, regulation, taxes and work force training initiatives and the policies concerning them should work together to make the economy and the political environment manufacturing friendly.

According to a study by MSCI, the metals industry has a direct impact on more than 500,000 jobs. Manufacturing is actually one of the bright spots of the current economy. It accounts for 11.7% of the U.S. GDP, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis. Significant challenges

remain, including the rising cost of health care and the increasing costs the federal government has imposed on businesses.

While questions for the panel centered around MSCI’s policy agenda, which includes positions on energy, trade, tax and regulation, panelists highlighted the importance of strong leadership and decisive action to support the growth seen in the manufacturing industry.

“Industries that create wealth—mining, manufacturing and farming—are also industries that are capital intensive,” said Schroer, explaining how that creates difficulties as far as cash flow. “Most politicians don’t realize that in our system of taxing, you pay twice. You pay first for the tax bill for the current year, but then they hit you up in advance for the estimated tax, assuming you’re going to have the same tax the following year. It starves companies of cash.”

Robinson agreed, “There is a sentiment that it’s bad to be successful. That’s not what this country was built upon. It was built upon successful people reinvesting in their companies, buying other companies, employing more people. If you’re not successful, you’re not

employing people. The tax code should be set up to incent growth.”

“Having lived in socialist countries and then coming back to America to start a business, I know what the effects of debt are,” said Schroer, regarding the national debt. “If you look at the $16 trillion of debt, that’s $160,000 of debt per taxpayer (assuming 100 million working taxpayers). My employees can’t pay that and I can’t pay that, even if it’s spread over 10 years. So it’s a multi-generational problem already. The impact it has on my small business: we have kept salaries low, we’re trying to reduce debt. Our thinking is that when the crunch comes, we need cash to survive. We can either pay interest, or we can pay taxes. We can’t pay both.”

This summit was one of 11 being held across the country this year. MSCI hosts these events every election cycle, following an initial set of town hall meetings in 2004 and 2005.

“This year is a critical election year, at a time when manufacturing could play a very pivital role in getting the nation back on track,” said Weidner. “As a nonpartisan organization, it’s our duty to inform our membership, state and federal representatives and the media about our industry and provide them with the tools to solve the challenges facing it. There are real issues facing the manufacturing sector, which will have real costs for employers and employees alike. Today’s discussion was frank, open and insightful. I hope it will lead to concrete, practical action.”

Founded in 1909, the Metals Service Center Institute has nearly 400 members operating from more than 1,500 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and throughout the world.

Together MSCI members constitute the largest single group of metals purchasers in North America, amounting each year to more than 55 million tons of steel, aluminum and other metals, with about 300,000 manufacturers and fabricators as customers.

St. Louis NtMA tours ranken tech’s New Facility and Awards Scholarships

The St. Louis Chapter of the National Tooling & Machining As-sociation (NTMA) toured Ranken Technical College’s new expanded facility in St. Louis on September 18th.

After a buffet dinner in the new areas lobby, attendees learned about the school’s expanded facil-ity from Ranken’s John Wood. Ranken’s Susan Flayer then discussed branding and marketing with the group. The new depart-ment chair, Wes Biermann then spoke about the school’s vision for the future and provided informa-tion on the available training and skills programs.

In other chapter business, the chapter awarded scholarships totaling $8,000 to two tech school students.

The evening concluded with tours of the facility.
