Around the Club…

Commodore’s Log…

Another season is in the books and most of the boats

are tucked in on the hard for the winter. After a bit of a

slow start the weather improved and we had a great

August and September. As a result of the wet summer

our lake is back up to where it should be, which is at its

90 year mean for this time of year, and up two feet from

the spring. I hope everyone had a wonderful year. I would like to announce that the CN Station should

be reopened before Christmas with Kerry Berlinquette at

the helm. The space is getting a makeover and is almost

ready to go. She hopes to improve on the original model

that we had which was a bar with light snacks. I am sure

it will be the place to be when she is done as we all know

she knows how to throw a party. With this new

responsibility she will be stepping down as Social

Director at the end of her term in November. She will be

missed and I would like to thank her for her seemly

endless energy in organizing events that bring us all

together. Our AGM meeting has been set for November 28. At

this meeting, as you know, our annual elections for the

board will be held. As well, you can hear about all the

projects that have been completed and new ones that

may be coming. This is your meeting and your chance to

be heard so I encourage you to attend. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the

directors for their hard work over the last year and over

my two year term as Commodore. I wish them well and

look forward to the Club continuing to grow and

improve. Todd Siciliano, Commodore

Thunder Bay Yacht Club

Marina Advisory Committee (MAC)… The MAC meeting scheduled for October 15th was rescheduled to October 30th,

and again to November 6th, 2013. However, one item of interest to late season boaters not reported from the

September MAC meeting is that City officials are advising that the last day to leave the marina is Friday, November

15th.

Representatives from MAC, as well as the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Temple Reef Sailing Club and Thunder Bay Yacht

Club, met with senior City Administration on Friday, October 25th for a Prince Arthur’s Landing-South of Pearl St. Meet &

Greet. The purpose of the meeting was to introduce key stakeholders interested in waterfront development south of

Pearl Street and to provide opportunity for the stakeholders to give preliminary input into a strategic planning process

for that area. As well the group reviewed draft terms of reference for the study of issues in relation to new/expanded

marina requirements.

MAC Representative Ray Innes at [email protected] or 344-7555.

In Memoriam…

William “Gordon” Phillips, a long-time resident of

Thunder Bay and TBYC member, passed away peacefully,

Sept. 22, 2013 at St. Joseph's Hospice. He was 96 years

old. Gordon was born May 4, 1917 in Mount Dennis

(Toronto) Ontario, the youngest of 11 siblings. He was

raised in Southern Ontario where he met and married

Lenora (Reeder), also of Mount Dennis. It was here that

his career with CNR began. He became a locomotive

engineer and this brought him and his family to Port

Arthur in 1946. His spare time was spent travelling,

skiing, sailing and enjoying the outdoors, but mostly he

could be found on his sailboat “Molokai”. Gord and

Lenora travelled to the Caribbean, Southern U.S., Mexico

and Hawaii. There were also many ski trips to British

Columbia, Montana, Colorado and Wyoming. Gord was

predeceased in 1991 by Lenora, his wife of over 50 years.

He is survived by their four daughters: Ginny Ekberg,

Nancy (Russel Smart), Janet (Ali Hernandez), Catherine

(Novoselac) Phillips and his grandchildren: Gillian

(Novoselac) Thompson, Emily Smart (Rob Porter), David

Smart and Penny Smart and great grandson, Reggie

Porter. He is also survived by numerous nieces and

nephews. “A tourist remains an outsider throughout his

visit; a sailor is part of the local scene from the moment

he arrives. (Anne Davison). We wish you fair winds and

following seas, Gord.

New Members… The Executive, on behalf of the Club, would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Full Members

approved at the October meeting: Don LeBlanc; Dale Savela; David Wadson.

Volunteer Hours…Make sure that you put your volunteer hours in the log book at the Mission Clubhouse by the end of

November or you communicate them to the appropriate Club Director who can forward them to the Club Treasurer.

Yard/Storage…The hydro poles on the north side of the Mission property are up and functioning. The LED lights are

working well. Thanks goes out to Ray Inness and his crew for the hard work on the project. The water service to that

part of the yard is also in. Note, however, that the water at the Mission property will be shut off on Monday,

November 4/2013.

Launch & Haul…Launch and Haul Director Frank Negro advises that the last day for haul out is Saturday, Nov. 2/2013.

Public Relations…An Executive sub-committee has begun meeting to develop and launch the “Members Only” portal of

the TBYC website. While a number of important Club documents such as The Constitution, Club Policies and Guidelines,

etc. will be made available through the portal, the first priority the sub-committee agreed upon was to get the Club’s

contact list, The Drift, up and available on the web site. The data base needed to accomplish this has been updated,

thanks to the co-operation of the membership, and a new and current contact list that has membership consent has

been finalized. Hopefully, The Drift will be available in the very near future.

Social Committee… The TBYC Fall Brunch was held Saturday, October 26th at the Mission Club House. It was a test to

see what the new kitchen could produce and by all accounts it was up for the task; a total of 78 people attended. The

cost was $5 per person and the menu’s featured item was Finnish pancakes. Thanks to organizers Sirkka Creagh, Jim

Massey, Tim Symington, and Gus Schmidt and their crew of cooks and helpers. Nice work guys! We look forward to the

3

Spring Brunch in 2014.

The Chili Buns Race was great, even though many were put off by the weather! Three boats braved the heavy winds

and provided great entertainment to the crowd gathered at TRSC. All 3 boats finished the grueling race within 80

meters of each other! It was a great day with lots of chili for racers and spectators! Special thanks to James Gracey for

all his work on the racing program this year and to the Temple Reef Sailing Club for allowing us to use its facility!

Congratulations to first place Giant

Flyer, Bert Blaauw and crew, who

also won a prize for having the most

senior crew member (left); second

place went to Zookeeper who also

won a prize for the most interesting

sail combination.

Third place went to Slingshot who

also won for youngest helmsman (12

year old Kade Berlinquette).

Slingshot was further recognized for

having the most crew per foot!

Close of Navigation was a huge success yet again. TBYC

sure does know how to party!! Thank you to Dave Mauro,

James Gracey, Geoff Hall, and Joe Lockert for their

involvement. We had 8 power boat guests this year-

thank you EVERYONE for coming out and supporting the

Club at this annual event.

Upcoming Events…

Annual General Meeting (AGM) - Thursday, November,

28, 2013, 7:00 pm at the Mission Clubhouse. The main

orders of business will be reports from the Directors and

election of Board Members for 2014.

Winter Workshop Ideas…Now that your baby has been put to bed for the winter, well for most of us anyway, it’s time

to start thinking about those winter or early spring projects to bring her up to snuff for next season. Many projects will

focus on repairs, replacement or upgrades to the electronics and navigation systems. But before you start you may

want to save yourself some time and frustration by familiarizing yourself with the boats wiring system. Club member

Jim Massey has passed along this helpful bit of information. Thirty years ago a common marine color code was

compiled and adopted by most major boat manufacturers. Some builders deviate slightly, but the core wire colors

usually remain the same. The colours are the standards set for wiring used on boats as established by the American

Boat Yacht Council. Combinations of colours are used for various instruments and machinery. These standards for

colours and colour combinations can be found at the following site: http://boatwiringadvice.com/boat-wiring-colors/.

There are wealth of project ideas and resources available on the internet. But here are a few links to get you started. If

you are a power boater, try http://www.boatingmag.com/how/diy-projects. There are some good ideas on that site for

sailors as well but if you are looking more specifically for sailboat projects try http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/; click
