Take Advantage of
Valuable Opportunities
The final Officer Professional Development Lunch is Satur-day of October UTA and Chief Ladley will begin hosting herseries for our Airmen and NCOs. The officer events earlierthis month were very well attended - I look forward to join-ing Chief Ladley for a few sessions.
We hosted a team of AFSO 21 experts that will be work-ing with each of the four groups in the wing on a RapidImprovement Event (RIE). This RIE will focus on one processin your workplace that was nominated by your group asproblematic. The purpose of an RIE is to rapidly identifyinefficiencies in the way we do our daily processes - onceduplication, waste, inaccuracies, etc. are found we can elim-inate them therefore saving time and flail. I have seen itwork personally and hope you can find time to participate.
Each of these developmental opportunities helps you be amore valuable contributor to the 124th Fighter Wing mov-ing forward. For that I thank you!
Have a safe and enjoyable fall.

Te 124th Civil Engineers Squadron spent more than two
weeks in August working internationally at the NAO SchoOberammergau Germany. Here our engineers have been abgain valuable experience working alongside German Meiste(Master Crafmen), and German Soldiers. Our Airmen havebeen given the chance to perorm AFSC tasks using Germantools and materials, and German construction methods. Wealso brought along airmen rom services and the medical cliwhere they have gained cross training experience.
Upon arrival to the NAO School, there were several projecthat we accepted. Tese projects included: replacing 34 windows and 4 doors; painting the exterior o the 4,500 square-
school building; surace repair and paint the bars over the wdows o a school; building a pad or the placement o trash cconstructing a Schneckle (German or Snail) house - which a raised spiral rock garden with stone pavers surrounding itremoving window bars rom one o the school buildings andbuilding a 3 paver pad or a bike rack.
We finished many o these projects, to or exceeding their expectations, and took on more projects such as; removing a trstump (which they reer to as the stump o knowledge); re-s(split is a well graded small gravel) areas o stone pavers; re-leveled an old concrete deensive fighting position; and built
insect house or the Schneckle house.
During this Deployment or raining our engineers have alsbeen able to partake in German social affairs, and many werable to visit historical sites such as the Dachau concentrationcamp and one o King Ludwigs castles.
At the end o our duty we completed the seven assigned taskand also completed the ad hocprojects. And, in an effort to our people employeed, we reconstructed another pad or tracans in the schools housing area beore departing.

Our prime time appearance atthe Berlin Air ShowBy Master Sgt. Joshua Reddick
Special to the Beacon
I was ecstatic when I received the newsrom operations group commanderCol. Paul Kingsley that I wouldrepresent the Idaho Air NationalGuard at the Berlin Air Show.
Te presence o the almighty and (Ibelieve) eared A-10 Tunderbolt II inGermany was an amazing sight to see. While being DY to Spangdahlem Air
Base, I witnessed hundreds o Airmenstop by the old 81st Fighter Squadron
we were working out o just totalk to us about the A-10. It was
very apparent that this monstero a machine was dearly missed.
Multiple senior NCOs stationedin the 52nd Fighter Wing wouldbring their new Airmen overasking i we could provide atour o the mighty Hawg. Itgave us all so much more pridethan we already had to showoff the Warthog, and Im notexaggerating when I say thatthese young Airmen acted like
kids in a candy shop. Tey win pure AWE standing in ro
o the beast while the enginecranked.
During the drive on theAutobahn up to Berlin I thouabout the type o welcomingwe would have. It had been 2plus years since the Berlin Wwas destroyed so how wouldGermans welcome us? It wasascinating observing all the
aviation enthusiaststhat huddled around us.

y absolutely loved us and treated use rockstars.
Aviation has always been captivatingto me ever since I was a jngling

o witness aircraf rom all over theworld was electriying. Its not everyday you get to see a Mig-29 Fulcrumaerial demonstration, Red Bullhelicopters executing ailerons andsplit-s turns, a pristine F4U Corsair

When the Search and Recoveryeam o 11 Services members ar-
rived on scene, they lined up ina cordoned manner to begin therecovery and marking. Te team

n a real-world situation these teamso Services volunteers would deployo the location o a mass causal-ty incident afer all survivors have
been evacuated. In most cases SecurityForces will have cleared the area anddeclared it sae or the team to begin.Te Search and Recovery teams have11 to 28 members depending on thesize or area o the incident site.
Te most common types o incidentsare rom vehicle accidents, plane crash-
es, and natural disasters. Te Searchand Recovery teams can be called toany o these locations to assist localgovernment agencies. In the event o amilitary accident, the Services Searchand Recovery team will always be thefirst to begin the recovery process. Insupport o a real world mass casualtyincident, Air Force Civil Engineering, local medical officials, and airport per-sonnel would assist in the effort.
Another important part o the in-vestigation is finding out what mayhave caused the event and findingpersonal effects o the deceased. Insome cases these personal effects arethe only identiying items that will beound. Tese items can be importantto amily members that have lostloved ones.
Personal effects can give amiliessomething to hold on too when thereis nothing lef. ech. Sgt. im Wol.
Providing amilies with properrespects o loved ones in these situ-ations begins with the Search andRecovery teams and their ability torecover remains and personal effects.

The week of Oct 5 11 is Fire Prevention Week.
Gowen Field Fire Department would like to take this
time to remind you of some things to know about
your surroundings on and off base.
Know where your nearest exit is to you.
Know where the closest fire extinguisher is at.
Know where any special hazards are in your area
(i.e.Flammable lockers)
This years Fire Prevention Week theme focuses on
motivating people to test their smoke alarms each
month to make sure theyre working properly
When was the last time you replaced your smoke
alarm? Or better yet when did you last test your
smoke alarm? Do you remember?
NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) statistics:
Having a working smoke alarm in the home cuts trisk of dying in a fire in half.
On average each year, three out of five home fire
deaths result in fires where there are either no
smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
NFPA recommends:
Installing smoke alarms inside every bedroom,
outside each sleeping area and on every level of t
home, including the basement.
Testing all smoke alarms every month by using th
test button. Replacing all smoke alarms every 10 years or soon
if they dont respond properly when tested.
To stay safe, replace the batteries in all smoke alarms,
least once a year and change the batteries immediate
if they begin to chirp before one year. It only takes a fe
minutes to help save the lives of you and your family.

ECARS went live September 5th, and since that time 32% of per-
sonnel at the base have self-registered in the program. Lets keepimproving! Using a government computer, follow the link below

ECARS Registration is for Everyone! The Employee Vehicle Certification and Reporting System (ECARS)
is a web-based program designed to ensure the IDANG complies
with Clean Air Act (CAA). This Act requires the IDANG to docu-
ment that vehicles driving on base comply with local air emissions
requirements.
What does this mean?ALL personnel at the base have to self-register in ECARS. If you
drive a vehicle on the installation 60 days or more per year, you
need to have a passing Ada or Canyon County emissions test onthat vehicle. This applies to all personnel driving on base even
if your car is registered outside of Ada/Canyon County. ECARS is
the program that documents you comply with this regulation. If
you dont drive on base 60 days or more per year, you still need to
identify this in ECARS.
Why do I have to do this?Congress passed this CAA law with the intent that employees at
federal installations would not have a negative impact on local air
quality. Since Ada County has air quality issues, employees at fed-
eral installations in Ada County are required to drive vehicles thatpass the local emissions test.
Using ECARS to document your compliance with the CAA is
required per AFI 32-7040 and Commander supported (read Brig.
Gen. Michael Nolans support letter here).

Earn college credit for what you know!
LearningCountsfor SECO
Not all learning takes place in the classroom. The knowledge you acquire
through life and work experience is extremely valuable, and may be
worth college credit.
LearningCounts for the Department of Defense Spouse Education and
Career Opportunities program or SECO is a new initiative to help
military spouses earn college-credit for knowledge and expertise gained
through life and work experience.
How does it work?
LearningCounts is an easy to use online service that helps youidentify college-level learning gained from:
! Volunteer and community service
! Work experience
! Training programs
! Military service
! Independent study
LearningCounts online courses guide you in building an online
Learning Portfolio that aligns your knowledge and expertise with
college courses. Your Learning Portfolio is then evaluated for college
credit.
Is LearningCountsright for me?LearningCounts is a great opportunity if you:
! Are a strong writer or have taken a basic college-level
writing course
! Have completed at least one other online course, or have
good computer skills and will feel comfortable completing an
online course
! Have several years of work, volunteer and/or other life
experience in an area that aligns with college coursework
for example: communications, management, information
technology, marketing, healthcare, or merchandising.
Why use LearningCounts?
! It saves time and money! Why spend time and money
taking a college course when you could build a Learning
Portfolio to earn credit for what you know??
! Its convenient and fits your busy schedule!
LearningCounts online courses can be taken any time and
anywhere.
How can I get more informationabout LearningCounts? Were glad you want to know more about the
LearningCounts for SECO program. The progr
will begin this fall. Until then, if you are interest
learning more, contact us at
