It is a quiet little New England town a mile or so o theinterstate and just east o Danbury, CT. Jan and I camehere to see how the 26 trees that our community donatedwere doing and to bring the sign We Will RememberWith You to Newtown. Elizabeth Rallo, the leader o theNewtown Recovery Team, directed us to the NewtownMunicipal Center, where we met with Chris Kelsey. Heis the tax assessor or Newtown and also on the recov-ery team, as well the manager o the Toy Warehouse. Asthe donations came in Chris was in charge o managingthem, and, yes, they did need a warehouse. There were56,784 donations o just Teddy Bears alone.
Ater a riendly chat at government center, Chris askedi we wanted to go out and see the trees. At this pointI hadnt gotten the sign out o the car as I was curiousto see where and how it might be placed, depending onwhere and how the trees were planted. My assumptionwas that they would be planted in a semi-circle or as aclass room setting, or something else creative, but that allo them would be planted in one place.
Chris then told me that they had made good use o ourdonation, planting them in many locations across townto enhance their parks. This then piqued my interest asI wasnt quite expecting some random planting o ourtrees across the city o Newtown. That was until I sawthe frst tree.
As we came down the steps rom the government cen-ter, Chris pointed across the way to a soccer feld and
said we could see the frst one right rom here. The viewwas proound. I was awestruck and speechless. There
on the side o the soccer feld stood a single, solitary, 3oot high blue spruce. Planted at the sideline, it stoodthere waiting, just as a small child awaiting his turn to getin the game...almost as i he never let. As I mentionedthis to Chris, he just looked at me, smiled and said, Yes,we know. What he didnt have to say was that these arethe places the kids played and enjoyed themselves andthis is how we want them remembered.
We then drove a short distance to DickinsonPark. There they have a skateboard park, a basketballcourt and walking trails that wind back and orth overa bubbly little creek. Again, the trees they planted therestood out. They were dierent. The little evergreenswere like the kids waiting to y their kites, or just takinga relaxing break between games. It was the same thingagain at Treadwell Park with its tennis courts, swimmingpool, and soccer felds, and, o course, more trees.
New England is beautiul this time o year with its treeswearing their all colors. Temperatures are cool andsome trees are even starting to loose their leaves, but notours. They will continue to wear their green colors andbe the symbol o new lie and rebirth as they stand sentryover the parks o Newtown. The git rom our commu-nity has become much more than a donation or a me-morial. It has become 26 separate memorials and morethan anything I could have ever imagined Even to themost casual observer, these trees are prooundly dier-ent. For the kids, this was their home, this is where theylived, and where they played and enjoyed themselves,
and this is how we can remember them.
Chris Kelsey of Newtown with JanHirt and Danbury Township TrusteeDave Hirt with the sign and one ofthe trees donated by Danbury Town-ship citizens in memory of the 26people lost at the Sandy Hook El-ementary school shooting.

Let me tell you about our weekendin Niagara Falls, Canada. We arrivedat dusk,in our room overlookingthe Falls, waiting for the lights tocome on over the Falls. We went to avery nice restaurant to overlook theFalls. No lights! Finally, the secondevening, we deduced our UnitedStates government had turned off
the lights, saving 1 Flip Switcher andannoying a lot of people. Our dayincluded a beautiful short road tripto Niagara On The Lake. Oh, my,why cant Port Clinton take a lessonfrom this nostalgic, charming town.Beautiful plantings on the sidewalks, inviting shops, galleries, ice cream, etc. This is a destination town. Whycant Port Clinton do the same! Wehave all the natural resources, butnone of the enthusiasm!
Wake up, Port Clinton!Sandy Schaffner
Dear Port Clinton,
Dont do it! I mean WaterworksPark. All these promises of jobs andincome to the city is so ridiculous. We hear what we want to hear, andwhen these promises are presented,we want to believe them. Born andraised in Port Clinton, I have seen somuch of the area shoreline sold andbuilt up. Please let our children and
grandchildren enjoy the last pieceof shoreline we have. Thinking thatthis property will be the answer toall Port Clinton nancial problemsis ridiculous. Until laws are changednationwide, we will never have thatthriving community we once had.Our jobs are in other countries.Wake up Port Clinton. Keep andprotect the precious posessions wehave left.

Port Clinton Middle School Fleet 7 began an interdisciplin-ary unit revolving around the young adult book The HungerGames. Last Monday morning students gathered in the ex-tended learning area, divided into their districts as they heldtheir own Reaping Ceremony. The Fleet 7 teachers dressed ascharacters from the story while acting out the Reaping Cer-emony, where two students from each district were randomlyselected as tributes from their district. See the Video or viewmore pictures in the Photo Album at www.pccsd.net
Students will be participating in various challengesthroughout the unit. The challenges are both intellectual(group quizzes, games, etc.) and physical (minute-to-win-itstyle games, and more) in attempts for their district to winthe PCMS Hunger Games. Instead of tributes being eliminat-
ed, districts will be tryingto win these challenges inorder to earn Mockingjaybadges for their posters. Atthe end of the unit, the dis-
trict with the most Mock-ingjays will win a prize.
The Language Arts teach-ers have been working to-gether to create an inter-active unit with the othersubjects: Math, Science,Global Cultural Awareness,Work & Family, and Art.Ms. Mallory Myers, Lan-guage Arts teacher stated,Our goal with having ourown Hunger Games is tohave something the kidscan get excited about whilebuilding teamwork andunity, along with inspiring
random acts of kindness.Random acts of kindness isa theme discussed through-out the story as well as inmany Port Clinton MiddleSchool programs.

On Friday night, Port Clinton went upagainst one of the Sandusky Bay Confer-ences best teams and found out just howdifcult it is to defend a player like Cody
Thompson. The senior quarterback, who is headedto the University of Toledo next year on afootball scholarship, had 203 yards of totaloffense and scored three touchdowns inleading the Tigers to a 48-8 victory at Ka-lahari Field at Huron Memorial Stadium.
At rst, though, the Redskins were able tomove the ball and showed some promisebefore a couple of key mistakes set themback. Port Clinton took the games open-ing drive 31 yards in nine plays to Hurons38-yard-line, only to see the drive stall on acouple of miscues that forced them back tothe 46 before punting the ball away. Unfor-tunately, the punt was partially blocked bythe Tigers Danzell Harris, giving Huron
the ball at the Redskins 41 to set them upwith great eld position.Huron (6-2, 4-1 SBC) scored on its
rst possession and controlled the gamethroughout. The Tigers rst drive covered59 yards in seven plays, culminating in atouchdown when Thompson scored ona 6-yard run on second-and-goal to giveHuron the lead for good at 7-0 with 4:24left in the rst quarter.
On Port Clintons next play from scrim-mage, Huron recovered a fumble at thePort Clinton 34, and four plays later, scored on running back Tommy Bogdens10-yard run to push the lead to 14-0.
After forcing another punt, the Tigersdrove 59 yards in four plays, scoring when
Thompson hit Spencer Maddox from 30yards out to make it 20-0 early in the sec-ond period. Huron would add three moretouchdowns in the quarter to make it a41-0 score at halftime.
Thompson nished 8-of-11 for 166 yardsand two touchdowns and rushed ve timesfor 37 yards and a score. He spread the ballaround to six different receivers, none ofwhom caught more than two passes.
Port Clinton did show some signs ofpromise in the second half, scoring on its
rst drive of the third quarter. The Skins(0-8, 0-5 SBC) took it 82 yards in 12 plays, converting on three third downs beforeBrandon Moore found Nathan Stubble-eld in the left at for a 4-yard touchdown.
There are some things that we need tolearn how to x in the last two games, saidPort Clinton head coach Beau Carmon. Its been eight games and were still mak-ing some of the same mistakes. (But) wewon the second half. Were not quittingout there. We had some tremendous ef-forts from some guys tonight, and we hadsome guys make plays on defense.
I didnt like the way we came out in therst half. Hurons linebackers are pretty fastand we werent able to throw the ball like Iwanted to. But (Huron) is a good team andthey made it tough for us tonight.
Moore had a nice game for the Skins, ac-counting for 231 yards of total offense. Hecompleted 18-of-23 passes for 135 yards,
one touchdown and two interceptions andrushed 19 times for 96 yards. Stubbleeldcaught a school-record 13 passes for 88
yards and a touchdown. Aidan Rospertcontributed as well, catching three passesfor 49 yards, including a key 38-yard re-ception that helped to set up Port Clintonslone touchdown. Running back TristenMallory carried it 11 times for 45 yards tohelp pace the rushing attack.
Beaus trying to put in his packagesand run a new system, Huron head coachTony Legando said of the Redskins. Theyplay a lot of young kids.
Currently ranked fth in the Division V,Region 16 computer rankings, the Tigersare looking like a playoff team that has a
chance to make some noise in the postsea-son.After eight games, the table is set pretty
well for us, Legando said. Weve got twogood football teams that weve got to play.Defensively, were becoming a much betterfootball team. Offensively, I think we areutilizing a lot of different people. A lot ofguys caught passes and touched the foot-ball. The offense is playing better becauseof that.

In a back-and-forth game that featured
three rst-half ties, Oak Harbor took thelead for good late in the second quarterbefore slowly building a lead to defeat St.Mary Central Catholic, 42-21.
The win, which came after two consecu-tive losses, moves the Rockets to 4-4 overalland 3-2 in the Sandusky Bay Conference. The Panthers, meanwhile, drop to 2-6 and1-4 in the league.
The trajectory of the game changed latein the second quarter with 1:09 left whenOak Harbor broke a 21-21 tie to take thelead for good at 28-21 as quarterback ColeWeirich hit Josh Sarahman from 27 yardsout for a touchdown.
SMCC responded, driving to the Rocket12-yard-line before safety Jourdan Ma-
guire knocked away a pass from Pantherquarterback Trevor Fitzthum in the endzone on the nal play of the rst half.
The Rockets stopped SMCC on the open-ing drive of the third quarter, forcing anincompletion on fourth-and-3 at the OH48 before responding with a touchdownto push the lead to 35-21. The six-playdrive ended when running back Ben Gen-zman scored from 24 yards out with eightminutes remaining. For the game, Gen-zman ran 25 times for 218 yards and twoscores and Andrew Heberling carried it 16times for 185 yards and three touchdowns.Quarterback Cole Weirich nished with13 carries for 77 yards and a touchdownand completed 1-of-2 passes for 27 yards
and a score. In all, the Rockets rushed 57times for 493 yards.Following a Panther turnover midway
thru the fourth quarter, Heberling scoredon a 65-yard touchdown to make it 42-21,accounting for the nal points.
We were just trying to run it at them, and fortunately we were able to break afew, Oak Harbor head coach Mike Maysaid. We knew their offense could scorepoints. We were going to just try and keep
running the ball at them and thats whatwe were able to do. We were able to comeout and control the clock in the secondhalf. That was a big factor.
The Panthers got on the board rst, scor-ing on a 10-yard pass from Fitzthum to De-narius Harris with 2:08 left in the rst quar-ter before Oak Harbor responded, driving64 yards in seven plays before scoring ona 23-yard run by Heberling with 11:25 re-maining inthe secondquarter.
The Rock-
ets forcedSMCC togo three-and-out andscored onthe rst playof their nextpossess ionwhen Wei-rich ran itin from 49

BY YANEEK SMITHOttawa Hills controlled this one throughout, scoring on
its rst two possessions before rolling to a 53-14 victoryover Danbury.
The Green Bears, who improved to 3-5 and and 3-2 inthe Toledo Area Athletic Conference, jumped out to a 14-0lead behind two touchdown runs (4, 9) by Austin Stevensbefore the Lakers (2-6, 1-4 TAAC) responded by driving72 yards and scoring a touchdown on a 4-yard run byCody German to cut the decit in half early in the secondquarter.
Unfortunately, the Lakers could not stop Ottawa Hills, allowing them to score 10 more points before halftime totake a 24-7 lead into the break.
The Green Bears pushed the lead to 31-7 on a 20-yardpass from Stevens to Jake Wollenburg. Danbury did an-swer, scoring on a 20-yard pass from Seth Vargo to JimmyChamberlain to make it a 31-14 game midway thru thethird quarter. However, Ottawa Hills put the game awayby returning the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a score.
We didnt play up to our abilities, said Danbury headcoach Bryan Dudash. We played well at times but we justdidnt play defense. We knew going in what (Ottawa Hills)was going to run, but we couldnt stop them.
Even though you know whats coming, it doesnt mat-ter unless you really want to stick your nose in there andmake a play. We worked hard, had a great week of prepara-tion, it was just a lack of execution.
German nished with 20 carries for 100 yards and ascore and Vargo completed 12-of-23 passes for 147 yardswith a touchdown and an interception. Chamberlain hadnine catches for 93 yards and a touchdown and JamesDorko nished with three catches for 48 yards.
This week, the Lakers travel to Gibsonburg to take onthe Golden Bears. Gibsonburg, which is 4-4 and 3-2 in theTAAC, defeated Hilltop, 64-0, last week. Matt Tille com-pleted 15-of-20 passes for 294 yards and six touchdownsin the win. The Bears, who defeated the Lakers, 37-0, last
year, run the spread offense. Picked to nish second inthe preseason poll, Gibsonburg has been inconsistent thisseason, but has shown signs of promise and is capable ofscoring lots of points.
