Message from NET Leadership

ON THE COVER Masterpiece Mystery! “It was a dark and stormy night.” This classic line could be the beginning of almost any mystery story, but new episodes of Masterpiece Mystery! take dark, devious and drama to new heights. Inspector Lewis, Season 7 Sundays, Oct. 5-19, at 8 p.m. CT on NET1

Lewis and Hathaway return for a seventh season of the beloved Inspector Lewis series. With their partnership renewed under altered circumstances, the duo solves crime in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford. Death Comes to Pemberly Sundays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. CT on NET1

What happens after Elizabeth and Darcy tie the knot at the end of Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice? Death Comes to Pemberly opens six years later as a coach races up to the country house with a hysterical passenger shrieking, “Murder!”

NET is delighted to offer the new PBS fall season with a stellar lineup

of new drama, arts, public affairs, science, history and children’s programs. Happily, we are building on a year of remarkable achievement.

Last year, PBS increased its award-winning primetime audience by 5 percent, becoming the only broadcast network with audience growth. While Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey played a significant role in raising public television’s visibility, it accounted for only eight hours of the year’s programming. Great local audience growth also occurred in the program genres of science, natural history and the performing arts.

Nebraska Land & Sky, Generations of Nebraska Warriors, Nebraska’s Capitol Masterpiece and Dstrctd Driving were highlights of our recent local television coverage. Coming up, you can cheer on the Nebraska Volleyball team (see page 20), and enjoy and a new season of Big Red Wrap-Up. And, you can look forward to a compelling series of NET Radio stories about veterans in November – along with our new TV documentary, Homecoming: The Impact on Nebraska Veterans (see page 3).

Aside from traditional television and radio - online streaming of local NET programs is growing steadily. In fact,

total streaming hours for NET Radio increased 6 percent from June to July, and 24 percent so far in 2014. There were 2.7 million minutes of live stream viewing during the 103rd Session of the Nebraska Legislature, which ended in April. Overall, PBS is averaging 220 million streams each month.

In children’s television and online content, we also continue to grow. In

June, PBS had 7 of the top 10 children’s shows with 80 percent of children ages 2-8 watching during the year. Locally, kids watch more than 280 hours of educational programs on NET Television each month and both parents and kids are interacting with PBSKids games, apps and educational materials on our new local site netNebraska.org/kids.

The success of our local and national programming is centered on our ability to create compelling, distinctive content that connects Nebraskans to each other and the world. We are grateful for more than 20,000 members and for your investment in NET. Thank you for making such programming excellence possible.

Upcoming NET Happenings

NET is commemorating veterans and their military service at premiere screenings of the NET News documentary Homecoming: The Impact on Nebraska Veterans, which examines the effects of returning home from war, even decades later. NET members, veterans and the general public are invited to attend three free screenings being held at locations across the state. Homecoming: The Impact on Nebraska Veterans will premiere on NET Television Monday, Nov. 10, at 9 p.m. CT on NET1.

A related website is being developed and will feature an archive of on-demand NET Television and NET Radio content related to the documentary, as well as resource materials for veterans and their families. The NET News production Generations of Nebraska Warriors, which aired in August

on NET Television, will be available for online viewing on the site. The program profiles Nebraska veterans from different eras and conflicts who share their stories of the battlefield and the challenges they faced when they came home.

Bates Honored by Nebraska Broadcasters Association

NET News received several awards. In the radio news section, the story “Putting Unused Retail Space to Work” won a gold award and “Companies Increasingly Looking beyond Profit Margins” won a bronze award.

An NET Radio news series associated with the NET News documentary, Marijuana Crossroads won gold in the “Best In-Depth or Investigative Story or Series” and the radio story “Arrested for Playing Baseball” won a silver award in “Best In-depth Sports Story or Series.”

The Nebraska Broadcasters Association inducted former NET General Manager Rod Bates into the “NBA Hall of Fame” at the association’s recent convention in Lincoln.

Bates spent almost 40 years as a broadcaster in Nebraska, joining NET as a producer/director in 1975 after moving his family from California. Bates became General Manager of NET in 1996 and served the network until his retirement in 2013.

During his tenure, Bates positioned NET in the top tier of public television and radio stations in the country. He secured funding for the digital conversion of NET’s radio and television transmitters, and guided the station’s program production efforts to new heights.

The Nebraska Broadcasters Association recently honored several NET Television, NET Radio and NET News productions with gold, silver and bronze Pinnacle Awards for excellence.

In the television news category, the NET News and Harvest Public Media special Changing Lands, Changing Hands won a gold award in the agriculture category.

The Nebraska Stories episode Keeping Grand, which aired on NET Television in April, 2014, won a gold award in the “Service to Community” television category. Big Red Wrap-Up – Team Jack won a gold award in the category for “Best Television In-Depth Sports Story or Series.”

Silver Pinnacle Awards went to Nebraska Stories: Miracle on the Prairie in the television section of “Service to Business, Industry, Government or Education.” Now What: Dementia Types and Diagnosis won a silver award in the television section of “Service to Community.”

The NET News website also won a silver award.

Brady Beran had a bright future ahead of him. The 185-pound linebacker for Lincoln East High School was a 4.0 student and an exceptional athlete on both the football and soccer fields, but that all changed on Sept. 24, 2004.

Brady was shaken up in the first quarter of a football game. His dad, Tom Beran, noticed that he was a “step slow,” a sign he had suffered a concussion. In the third quarter, Brady took another hit. It was a helmet to helmet collision.

“The coach came, helped me get up and walk off to the sidelines. And then, once I got to the sidelines, I collapsed,” said Brady. He was rushed to the hospital for surgery and placed in a medically induced coma. Brady woke up five weeks later, confined to a hospital bed, unable to walk or talk, and in need of massive rehabilitation.

Educating Nebraska

Teachers matter. Research supports what common sense tells us – that the professionals in charge of our children’s classrooms play a critical role in shaping young people’s academic future. But are there enough high quality teachers to provide all Nebraska youth with stimulating classroom environments?

Building Better Teachers examines if Nebraska has the systems in place to ensure that students who would benefit the most from high quality teachers – children coming from the state’s most challenging educational environments – have access to the best

teachers available. This episode of State of Education in Nebraska, produced by Nebraska Loves Public Schools for Nebraska Connects, airs Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. CT on NET1.

Looking over the horizon, the program also looks at whether there are enough capable college students training to be the teachers of tomorrow, as well as if new Nebraska teachers are getting the support they need during their first few years in the classroom. In Building Better Teachers, key national and state leaders confront questions about preparing teachers for the schools of tomorrow.

The educational website, Stories of Nebraska Quilters, was recently honored with a regional 2014 CINDY Award for excellence in

interactive media. This year, more than 8,200 entries from around the world were judged in more than 160 media categories. Stories of Nebraska Quilters is a pilot project developed by the International Quilt Study Center and Museum in Lincoln, Neb., along with its partners, NET Learning Services and the Nebraska State Historical Society. Curious George Solves a Halloween MysteryCelebrate Halloween with your favorite monkey! In the special Curious George: A Halloween Boo-Fest, George spends his first

Halloween in the country and a legendary tale about a scarecrow haunting the countryside spooks him. But is the story real? George does his monkey-best to find the perfect Halloween costume and solve the scarecrow mystery. Curious George: A Halloween Boo-Fest airs on NET Television’s NET1 at 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. CT on both Monday, Oct. 27, and Friday, Oct. 31.

The week of Oct. 27-31 also features three all-new Curious George episodes. On Tuesday, Oct. 28, George volunteers to take an undersea adventure in a monkey-sized submarine and uses his super spy skills and all five of his senses. Wednesday, Oct. 29, George figures out a way to quietly find his way to the refrigerator in the dark and he and Hundley are amazed by all the flying machines at the museum’s aviation exhibit. And, on Thursday, Oct. 30, George and the Man with the Yellow Hat are missing a dinosaur bone and a large, unmarked box that arrives on George’s doorstep has him guessing what could be inside. Schuyler Hosts Event for Children and FamiliesParents and kids can click on the newest PBS Kids apps at a technology experience workshop hosted by NET Learning Services on Thursday, Oct. 16, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. CT, at the elementary school in Schuyler, Neb. This educational outreach event is free and open to the public, and features information from a variety of community organizations that support families. Materials will be available in both English and Spanish.

Event partners include NET, Schuyler Public Schools and the Nebraska Early Childhood Education Endowment Fund’s Sixpence Programs. Sixpence programs represent Nebraska’s commitment to meeting the needs of children birth to three in the most critical years of development.

The Pancake Man will be flipping flapjacks and the event will feature a visit from Daniel Tiger. The event is free for families with children from preschool age to eight years, but donations are appreciated.

NET Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the important contributions Hispanic and Latino Americans

make in the United States, and celebrates their heritage and culture. U.S. Census figures show that in 2013, nearly 10 percent of Nebraska’s population claimed Hispanic or Latino heritage.

NET Television honors the month with special programming, beginning with the Hispanic Heritage Awards Friday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. on NET1. Top Latino performers and personalities will pay tribute to honorees representing categories such as education, leadership and the arts.

A Nebraska Stories segment airing Friday, Oct. 10, at 7 p.m. CT on NET1 explores how the Hispanic celebration of life, Dia de los Muertos, looks at death with humor, music, dancing and art. Friday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. CT on NET1, Nebraska Stories features Lincolnite Johnny Davis, whose Mexican grandmother inspired his homemade salsa business.

The Latino Americans series tells the story of Hispanic Americans from the 1500s to present day. A marathon of six hour-long episodes will air Sunday, Oct. 12, from 4 to 9 p.m. CT on NET2 World. The programs follow Latino history from the time when Spanish explorers first entered North America to the gradual construction of a new American identity.

And, Monday, Oct. 13, at 9 p.m. CT on NET1, Rebel: A Voces Special Presentation reveals the mysterious true story of Loreta Velazquez, a Cuban immigrant who was one of the estimated 1,000 women who secretly served as soldiers during the Civil War.

The Latino Americans series tells the story of Hispanic Americans from the 1500s to present day.

During the Nebraska State Fair in Grand Island, NET Kids and University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension paired technology with reading and hosted “Nebraska’s Biggest Story Time.” This celebration of 100 years of extension services included a visit from Clifford The Big Red Dog, a book giveaway and time to explore PBS Kids apps.

An outgrowth of the POV documentary of the same name which chronicled two young boys on their educational journey, American Promise promotes the success of African American young men. During a nationwide action tour, American Promise filmmakers stopped in Omaha to address youth, parents and educators. The project includes action steps and strategies that ensure all young people are equipped with the same opportunities for excellence.

During the event Aug. 21-23, attendees screened the NET Learning Services State of Education documentary, Need to Succeed: Closing Omaha’s Black Male Achievement Gap, and attended workshops about the unique social and emotional needs of young African American men and teaching strategies for improving self-esteem and academic success.

“Thank you for three incredible days! The American Promise tour was very inspiring and meaningful. It will definitely accelerate the pace of positive change and momentum in our city and beyond,” said Willie Barney of The Empowerment Network in Omaha.

Engaging Nebraska

Hull was the program manager of the Nebraska ETV Network from 1955-82 and during his tenure co-developed the “Anyone for Tennyson?” poetry series and the “The Mark Twain Series” of dramas for PBS.

He took a leave of absence in 1966-67 to work for the U.S. Information Agency as a television adviser to the government of South Vietnam, and developed a four-station network in the country. From 1982-88, he was director of the Program Fund for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in Washington, D.C. He returned to Nebraska in 1988 and served as station manager of KUON-TV and associate general manager for NET for eight years.

Officially “retired,” he remains active on several boards, commissions and foundations. Among his many awards, he received the Addison E. Sheldon Memorial Award for significant achievement in the preservation of Nebraska history from the Nebraska State Historical Society in 2013 and the Pioneer Award from the Nebraskaland Foundation in 2009.

During the August commencement ceremony, the University of Nebraska honored NET senior adviser Ron Hull with the Nebraska Builder Award. Since 1946, the award has recognized individuals who have displayed exceptional service to Nebraska and the university.

Gary Heusel and his son, Jason Heusel, are the first – the first to support NET by donating a vehicle

to our new Car Donation program.

“I heard about it on NET Radio during the Saturday morning programs,” said Jason.

Jason drove thousands of miles around the country in the 2001 Saturn that his dad helped him purchase in 2002. Recently, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) graduate decided to purchase a new vehicle and talked to his dad about donating the Saturn.

“We could have just sold the car, but there were some safety issues that made me uncomfortable with that,” said Gary. “Jason told me about this program, and because of Jason’s support and our support for public television, it made sense to support it with this donation, too.”

“We always listened to NPR for news when we traveled and I’ve spent about 14 years listening myself. Public broadcasting is something the community needs and I want to keep it going,” he said. “I decided to donate the car because I know NET will get more than I would. I wanted to share a little.”
