SDA Board Of Directors and Regional Liaisons 2015-2016
Welcome back to returning Board members and a special welcome to new Board member Colin Rudolph, Communications Chair. Thank you to Stefan Rumpel for his services on the Board as Communications Chair.
Welcome also to Tanya Johnson (Moose Jaw), Ray Deans (Moose Jaw), Shannon MacFarlane (Spiritwood) and Brodie Cuff (Rosetown), this year’s Regional Liaisons.
October 2015
September has been a busy month for Saskatchewan Drama Association and a great way to kick off the
2015-16 year!! I would like to welcome some new faces to the SDA Board of Directors. Colin Rudolph
from Turtleford is our new Communications Chair and Tanya Johnson, Shannon McFarlane, Ray Deans and
Brody Cuff are Regional Liaisons. I also want to welcome back the rest of the Board of Directors and
thank all them for volunteering to help promote student and youth drama in the province! Our Board of
Directors met with Flo Frank on September 18th to continue our Diversity Planning and then took part in
a team building activity called The Dramazing Race. We spent a day and half working on our strategic plan for 2015-
2016 and also looked at planning for the future. Board members and office staff attended the STF Professional Growth
Network Day in Saskatoon on September 26th. We presented our final report on the Poster and Brochure project which
was partially funded by a grant from the STF. I hope our membership have received their copy of the poster in the mail
and that they are on display in schools across the province. Darlene Briere met with the Northern Sport Culture Recrea-
tion Association to discuss our partnership with them related to the Northern Drama Program. We will also be meeting
with University of Regina to continue developing our partnerships and explore new opportunities to work together.
On September 25th SDA partnered with the University of Regina, Theatre Department and “Listen to Dis” Community
Arts Organization to present "Neither Heroes Nor Ordinary People" in celebration of Culture Days Saskatchewan. Schools
were invited to attend the performance and post-performance chat. There were full houses for both performances and
it was deemed a huge success!! Hopefully we will be able to provide similar opportunities for our students in the fu-
ture.
There are some changes taking place in the upcoming year that I would like to tell you about. We have revised our
membership fees. The Saskatchewan Drama Association offers three levels of membership: Adult Membership, Associate
Membership and Post-Secondary Membership. The Associate memberships can be purchased by a school and provide up
to 4 teachers with access to SDA workshop grants, unlimited borrowing from the Mary Ellen Burgess Library and SDA
newsletters. For more information check out our website or contact the SDA office. Our Festivals Committee has also
updated the Festivals Handbook. Specifically, performances now must be a minimum of 20 minutes and a maximum of
60 minutes for Regional and Provincial Festival. Please keep that in mind when choosing a play this year!
The Mary Ellen Burgess Library offers a great selection of resources and is available for viewing online on our website.
This summer we added new resources and scripts related to cultural diversity. We will be posting information about new
resources on our Facebook page. If you can’t find what you are looking for, don’t hesitate to call the office and ask for
assistance!!
If you and your colleagues are looking for a way to kick start your program, perhaps a drama workshop is what you
need. Workshops offer opportunities for groups to work with experienced drama people based on the needs of the
group. In the upcoming year, our Board of Directors will be looking at ways to restructure our workshop funding. We
want to provide support for teachers so that curricular and extra curricular drama programs can continue to flourish in
our province.
Our Communications Committee is developing a Membership Survey which will be sent to you in December. Please take
the time to complete the survey and help us provide programming that meets your needs. The Communications Commit-
tee will also be posting regular updates on our Facebook page including deadlines and upcoming events. If you are host-
ing a workshop or have upcoming performances at your school please let us know so we can post it on our Facebook
page.
Our Education Committee will also be hard at work in the upcoming year developing a teacher resource to provide ideas
for teaching cultural diversity and to celebrate the 150 birthday of Canada. We are always looking for people to assist
with developing resources such as this. If you are interested contact Lyndsay Moskal, Education Chairper-
son.
SDA will be hosting a Participant/Host Workshop on November 21, 2015 in Regina. If you are hosting a
regional festival or want to learn more about our Regional and Middle Years Festivals, please contact our
office to participate. Everyone is welcome.
I would like to thank Darlene Briere and the office staff for all their hard work and dedication. They spend
long hours keeping SDA running smoothly and we all benefit!!!

In 2017, to help celebrate Canada’s 150th Anniversary, SDA’s Board of Directors is asking all participants in Regional and Mid-dle Years Festivals to produce plays written by Canadian Play-wrights. They especially are encouraging that you select plays for production written by Saskatchewan Playwrights, which would include student written, collective creations and teacher written plays. Saskatchewan’s rich cultural diversity can also be shared through the production of multi-language plays that highlight our experiences and values.
Also, watch for SDA’s Travelling Suitcase. This new resource will be available for your use next year!
For more information on Canada 150, visit their website - www.canada150.gc.ca. More infor-mation on SDA’s plans for 2017 will be posted on our website in the upcoming year.

Rationale for the Award: The Board of Directors for SDA recognizes the importance of honoring outstanding achievements and accomplishments of our adult members. They also recognize the importance of preserving the growing history of the Saskatchewan Drama Association. It may also be presented as a posthumous award. Eligible recipients will have shown a sustained and significant contribution to the promotion of the growth and develop-ment of child and youth drama in Saskatchewan and attended and promoted professional development through communi-cation and drama development programs. The person will have demonstrated respect for all individuals involved in the SDA and demonstrate a commitment to the ongoing development of child and youth drama in the province. Nomination for Award: Nominations may be received from individuals or groups. The selection of recipients of this award rests with the Scholar-ship and Awards Committee of the Saskatchewan Drama Association. There will be maximum of 5 per year.
