Hearing Loss and DementiaBy Ava M. Stinnett

We know that gradual hearing loss can be a common symptom of aging; however, in some people itmay also be an early sign of Alzheimer’s disease or other types of dementia. Most people associatehearing loss as being an inconsequential part of aging, but findings suggest that it may play a muchmore important role in cognitive function and overall brain health. Recent studies suggest that adultswith hearing loss are more likely than adults with normal hearing to develop dementia. Will the varioustheories about a link between hearing and dementia lead researchers to a treatment for hearing loss thathelps reduce the incidence of dementia?

According to Dr. Frank Lin, an audiologist and epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University and theauthor of several studies, there are four possibilities for how hearing loss contributes to dementia. Themost obvious is a common physiological pathway that contributes to both hearing loss and cognitivedecline, although Lin’s studies don’t give this explanation much credence.

Another possibility involves what researchers refer to as “cognitive load” (i.e., how the effort ofconstantly straining to understand speech stresses the brain). This effort to hear takes awayresources needed by other brain functions (e.g., memory).

A third factor is that hearing loss may affect brain structure in a way that contributes to cognitiveproblems. According to Lin’s studies “older adults with hearing loss have less gray matter in thepart of their brain that receives and processes sounds from the ears.” That begs the question ofwhether using a hearing aid to get clearer speech signals to the brain will allow these brainstructures to recover their previous size and function.

Last, social isolation—like the type that sometimes accompanies hearing loss—has been recognizedas a risk factor for the cognitive decline seen in those with Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Lin andother researchers are quick to point out that being at increased risk does not mean a person willdevelop dementia.

How do you promote brain health and reduce the risk of hearing loss as you age?

Keep your heart healthy by staying active; eating lots of vegetables and fruits along with legumes, fish, nuts, and seeds; and avoiding smoking. Smoking is a big risk factor for sensory loss(i.e., vision and hearing).

Protect your hearing from loud noises.

Stay connected to a good social network where you can have stimulating conversation and access to a variety of activities and experiences.

Although scientists have not yet determined why untreated hearing loss increases the risk of demen-tia and cognitive decline, they advise getting treatment for hearing loss if and when the need arises.

The probability of falling increases withage but balance training can help toprevent falls. According to the Centers forDisease Control and Prevention (CDC) 1 in 4adults age 65+ fall each year.

Many people take balance for granted andnavigate without thinking, effort or fear. Formillions of others, however, poor balance is amajor problem and can lead to balance-related falls and injuries. Fortunately, studieshave concluded that exercise can reduce notonly the odds of falling but can also decreasethe risk of sustaining fall-related injuries.

Although there are many reasons for senior falls, one of biggest factors ispoor balance. Causes of poor balance could be inner ear disorders, viralinflammation around the labyrinthine nerve, other nerve disorders, visionproblems, diabetes, medications, or muscle loss. The loss of muscle mass isalso a very common problem for older adults. Studies have shown that olderadults who do not exercise or are very inactive tend to lose 3 – 5 oz. of musclemass per year. Regular exercise is one of the most important tools for seniorsseeking to avoid injurious falls. Studies have shown that exercising canincrease muscle strength and mass, thus improving balance.

The Live 2 B Healthy program is proven tohelp seniors improve both balance andoverall strength. Live 2 B Healthy Trainersare all Certified Personal Trainers who areexperienced in working with seniors. Theyare familiar with the challenges that comewith age and customize exercises to fit theindividual needs of each resident. Ourtrainers keep participants motivatedthroughout the class and make an effort toget to know each and every person by name.
