EXTREMELY RARE 1916I SPECIMEN PENNY

The Australian 1916 bronze halfpennies and pennies were struck at the Calcutta Mint in India. Australia was in the midst of the First World War, so our lowest denomination coins were struck off-shore which allowed the Melbourne Mint to strike the 3d, 6d, 1/-, 2/- and gold sovereigns, while the Sydney Mint struck only the gold coins for that year.

Australian pre-decimal specimen or proof coins dated prior to 1955, were struck mostly in very small numbers - usually less than 10 pieces, for Royalty, members of parliament, dignataries and designers.

The term 'proof' refers to a coin's method of manufacture, not its state of preservation. Australian Pre-Decimal Proof coins of this period are struck twice from specially prepared, freshly polished dies and have near brilliant surfaces with perfect detail.

It is well documented that the Melbourne Mint struck six Australian 1930 Proof Pennies and one of them sold recently for over one million dollars! To compare against Australia's most sought after and most expensive proof, this coin is favourably priced.

LESS THAN 10 KNOWN, EXTREMELY RARE!LUSTROUS, FDC $25,000.00

This superb 1916 I Specimen Penny is extremely rare - one of only three sold privately or through auction since 1989. Sharply struck and showing very high rims which is notorious for specimen/proof coins of that year.

CENTENARY OF THE GREAT AIR RACE

$1 AL/BRONZE, ENCAPSULATED, CARDED, SET OF 8 HOUSED IN TIN $130.00

In 1919 the Australian Government announced a £10,000 prize for the first Australians to fly from England to Australia in less than 30 days, in a British-built plane. The competition promoted Australian aviation after WWI.

Six Australian and one French crew took up the challenge, flying timber and fabric planes. Critics protested that the race could become deadly. Tragically, two crews lost their lives. Two more crashed out of the race. Along the route, the brave crews faced dramatic dangers including volcanoes, storms, equipment failures and unfriendly locals.

The excitement, drama and tragedy of the Great Air Race is commemorated in this set of 8 stunning 2019 $1 coins, packaged in a collectible tin.

Each coin design features a beautifully sculpted plane plus the names of the crew members who participated in the race.

The 8 designs include:• AircoDH9• AllianceP.2Endeavour• BlackburnKangaroo• CaudronG.4• MartinsydeA1• SopwithWallaby• VickersVimy• TheGreatAirRace-Coloured

1852 ADELAIDE POUND - TYPE II

During the gold rush of the mid 1800's, thousands of men left South Australia insearchoftheirfortuneinthegoldfieldsofVictoria, takingwiththem currency in the form of gold sovereigns. As a result, huge economic stress was apparent throughout South Australia with many mines closing.

On the 28th January 1852, desperate to boost its failing economy, the Bullion Act of 1852 was passed. The act allowed the formation of the Adelaide Assay Office, assigned to assessing the purity, weight and characteristics of gold purchased from the Victorian gold fields. As anincentive for the miners to bring their gold to South Australia, the assay office offeredahigherpriceperouncethanthoseinVictoria.

To overcome issues of an unpopular ingot, an amendment was made to the act allowing ten shilling, one, two and five pound gold pieces to be struck by the Government Assay Office in Adelaide.

In a rush to produce the coins the first of the designs by engraver Joshua Payne failed with around 50-100 coins exhibiting a severe die crack on the reverse at about 12 o'clock. This is now known as the Adelaide Pound Type I.

A new die was quickly produced to replace the cracked die with the only major change being a crenellated inner circle on the reverse instead of the beaded inner circle of type 1. This is known as the Adelaide Pound Type II.

24,648TypeII'swerestruckbutitisbelievedonlyasmallpercentageactuallycirculated as it was quickly discovered that the coins had almost two shillings of intrinsic gold value above the one pound and were soon withdrawn and or melted by profiteers or official decree.

This Adelaide Pound Type II that we are offering exhibits beautiful lustre and is graded PCGS MS61.

THE BANK OF AUSTRALASIA BEECHWORTH, VICTORIA £20

Established under Royal Charter in 1835, the Bank of Australasia's governing Board of Directors were situated in London, but local boards were appointedat each branch with appointments sought from Government officials and respected merchants. This structure gave the bank a high standing in the community and helped to contribute local knowledge to its operations.

The financial strength of the bank was particularly evident during 1893, when it was one of a handful of Australian banking institutions which did not suspend trading with the bank's notes backed by the New South Wales government legislation, their issue was instrumental in overcoming stagnant trade and commerce.

The bank continued to issue notes in New Zealand until the Reserve Bank ofNewZealandassumedresponsibilityupuntil1934.In1951,theBankofAustralasia amalgamated with the Union Bank of Australia Limited to form theAustralianandNewZealandBankingGroup(ANZ).

BANK OF NEW SOUTH WALES 1847 £1 SPECIMEN

When the first fleet arrived in Australia in 1788, no provision had been made to supply the colony with a currency of any form. The only means of trade was a barter system which was difficult to keep under control and eventually threatened the survival of the New South Wales colony.

As such, one of Governor Lachlan Macquaries first priorities was to set about establishing a peoples bank, the Bank of New South Wales, which was established in 1817. The influx of immigrants coming to Australia seeking fortune with the discovery of gold in the mid 1850's brought about a boom of private banks throughout the settlements.

The newly established banks introduced their own legal tender notes, many of which were large and elaborately engraved to discourage forgeries. Prior to the financial crash of 1889 and the subsequent foreclosure of many banks, these splendid "pieces of art" were widely used and traded.

Today, Pre-Federation banknotes form part of Australia's earliest currency history with the offering of this Sydney, New South Wales Specimen One Pound,withinknotationofOctober4th,1847belowmargin.

AUSTRALIAN 1930 PENNY

One of Australia's most sought after and highly publicised coins is the Australian 1930 Penny. Whether you have read about it in the papers or searched through buckets of hundreds or even thousands of pennies, this is the date every keen collector wants!

Struck by the Melbourne Mint during The Great Depression, there wasn't a demand to produce large quantities of pennies as they had done in the late 1920's. The following year a small order was placed and some released to visitors of the Melbourne Mint. Therefore only about 1500-3000 coins were struck dated 1930.

Catalogues and auction values below show how prices have escalated in VeryFineandExtremelyFineconditionsincethe1960's.
