NOTES FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

The parable in today’s Gospel strikes home with each of us.  Few of us are like the Pharisee.  He doesn’t ask God for mercy.  As he takes what he is sure is his proper place in the Temple, the Pharisee appears to be caught up in prayer, but in reality he is not giving thanks to God as much as he is delighting in himself. In reality he is committing the primal sin, the original sin of mankind, the sin of Adam.  His pride has convinced him that he does not need God.

Most of us, perhaps all of us, are like the tax collector, aware of our own unworthiness to be before God. Without controls, Jewish tax collectors demanded far more than Rome mandated and became wealthy, basically using the Romans so they could steal from their own countrymen.  It is in this frame work that we can best understand the parable and its relationship to us.  We see our spiritual state in contrast to the Pharisee.  We know that we need the mercy of God.

We cannot comprehend the depth of the love of our God.  He sees each of us for whom we are, with all the warts and bumps, yes, but also with the love, conviction, courage and character, the virtue that is integral to our existence.  God sees Himself in us, our unique reflection of His being.  He loves us.  He is far more concerned with extending us His mercy than He is with our sinfulness.  It is The Year of Mercy.

It is with bitter sweetness that we say farewell to Greg Boulden our parish youth minister and Director of Mission and Ministry.  He has a wonderful opportunity in a neighboring high school but we will miss his many talents as a member of our parish staff.  Thank you and best of luck & countless blessings to you, Greg, and your future.

Also, Janice Rowan has retired from her ministry as Coordinator of Parish Outreach.  We thank her for her service to the needy of our area, in the name of our parish. We will miss her on our parish staff and pray that her days ahead are refreshing and grace filled.

-Fr. Joe

Know the Positions of the Presidential Candidates. Do you know where the presidential candidates stand on issues that are important to Catholics? Become informed before you enter the voting booth on November 8th…

The attached information sheet, “Know the Positions of the Presidential Candidates,” is compiled by the Pennsylvania, Florida, and Virginia Catholic Conferences.  Delaware Catholic Advocacy Network (DCAN), with Bishop Malooly’s approval, has been sanctioned to distribute the information in the Diocese of Wilmington.

PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION Lord God, as the election approaches, we seek to better understand the issues and concerns that confront our city/state/country, and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful citizens in our community. We ask for eyes that are free from blindness so that we might see each other as brothers and sisters, one and equal in dignity, especially those who are victims of abuse and violence, deceit and poverty. We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children unborn and those abandoned, Men and women oppressed because of race or creed, religion or gender.  We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to your Kingdom. We pray for discernment so that we may choose leaders who hear your Word, live your love, and keep in the ways of your truth as they follow in the steps of Jesus and his Apostles and guide us to your Kingdom of justice and peace.  We ask this in the name of your Son Jesus Christ and through the power of the Holy Spirit.                                             Amen

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul members (or "Vincentians") here at St. John the Beloved would like to thank those members of St. John’s community who have continually provided financial support to us so that we might respond to those many individuals who call our parish for assistance most every day. Your dollars have been life-giving to many. The typical things your contributions pay for are rent, Delmarva Power, oil for heat, water bills, security deposits, food, mortgages and even firewood. We schedule appointments with those in need and go in pairs visiting them person to person. We pledge to maintain the confidentiality and dignity of those we serve. We coordinate, when needed, with community agencies who also have a commitment to provide acts of charity for those less fortunate. We invite you to join the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We will provide you with written materials, guidance/training from a “seasoned” member who will accompany you on the visits as well as ongoing support by attending our monthly meetings. As we reach out in faith and love we recognize the sacredness of human life. At the same time we continue to learn through fulfilling these Works of Mercy that we are our brother’s keeper.

For more information, call the Parish Office at (302) 999-2111 and they will have a member of the Society contact you.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS

October 23: When it's hard to forgive a spouse who has 'done you wrong' try praying this way, "Oh Lord, let me forgive those who sin differently than I do." Now is the time for healing, not self-righteousness.

PARENTING POINTERS

October 23: Try this bedtime ritual: What did I do well today? What can I do better tomorrow? (adapted from Family Memory Calendar, Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown)

VOCATIONS The tax collector in today’s gospel prays “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Sometimes when God calls a person to priesthood or religious life, that person’s first response is “I’m not worthy; I’m a sinner!” The good news is we’re all sinners, but we’ve been redeemed by Jesus Christ and called to live lives of holiness. If you think God is calling you to priesthood, or to religious life, please call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573-3113, [email protected]). And be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!

The Gospel this week describes two different attitudes toward prayer. The tax collector and the Pharisee both pray but in drastically different ways. Bring it Home this week by reflecting on which character your attitude toward prayer most reflects. With your family talk about what it means to be humble in prayer. Strive to be humble; knowing God is in control, in prayer and in your daily life.

INFUSED WITH THE WORKS OF MERCY

BY: TOMMY O'DONNELL

In the coming months, dozens of states will be confronted with efforts to legalize physician-assisted suicide. Under the guise of compassion and autonomy, the expansion of this practice would really mean the legalized abandonment of people who are terminally ill. Instead of being encouraged to end their lives, patients need proper pain management, care for depressive symptoms (which may be caused by their sense of helplessness), spiritual guidance, and accompaniment as they approach their final days. In other words, we should kill the pain, not the patient!

If you live in one of these states, seek out your State Catholic Conference [5] and, with their help, keep in touch with your state representatives, urging them to reject any legislation which would weaken society's protection of the vulnerable.

And yet the Gospel calls us to more than advocacy efforts. Pope Francis reminds us of Jesus' demand that our daily lives be infused with the works of mercy. "The Gospel teaches what Jesus' kingdom requires of us... that closeness and tenderness are the rule of life for us also, and that on this basis we will be judged," the Holy Father states in a 2014 homily [6]. Visiting the sick (a corporal work of mercy) and comforting the sorrowful (a spiritual work of mercy) are not add-ons to the Gospel, but, as Pope Francis puts it, they are the "starting point of salvation."

November begins with two feasts related to salvation: All Saints and All Souls. The first is dedicated to those who---like the newly-canonized Saint Teresa of Calcutta---now glorify God with all the saints. The latter feast is for those who may have to spend more time spiritually preparing for the heavenly life. May it compel us to become infused with mercy in this life! The spiritual and corporal works of mercy point to the reality of "the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting."

Moved by mercy, we show the terminally ill and the elderly the face of Christ by our presence and care. We can prepare them to meet the Lord by providing opportunities for sacramental reconciliation, as well as reconciliation with family members who may be distant. The article "Caring for Loved Ones at Life's End [7]" (available at www.usccb.org/respectlife [8]) provides concrete ideas for showing the "closeness and tenderness" demanded by the Gospel. Companionship, as an alternative to the offer of legalized suicide, is what Pope John Paul II called in _Evangelium vitae [9]_ "the way of love and true mercy," the way demanded by our common humanity.

Bound by our common humanity, all people of good will can recognize how the social fabric frays when suicide is presented as a legitimate choice. As the Year of Mercy draws to a close, the way of love is just beginning, and so we entrust all our future works and legislative efforts to Mary, "a sure sign of hope and solace [10]."

Tommy O'Donnell is a Staff Assistant for the Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities, U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. You can find “Caring for Loved Ones At Life's End" and other Respect Life resources at www.usccb.org/respectlife [8].
