Taking Back the NightclubBy tristan smith

I don’t know about you, but my patience for the club scene is measured by a fine line that is immediately crossed by a succession of other lines: Specifically the mile long down the block line for entry, the line of credit necessary to buy the Windex-coloured shots, the shitty pickup line given by your wasted dance partner and the line of sketchy guys in the bathroom waiting to do l...You get the idea. The past five years or so have seen a resurgence in cocktail culture that suggests that I’m not the only one feeling a tad ex-hausted by the club scene. Craft Cocktail Culture—the art of refined mixed drinks—has been attracting spirit geeks for decades, and is lately enjoyed popularity with young professionals. Gone are the light beers and loud music. This is a crowd more inclined towards Sinatra than Skril-lex. From the Phone Booth bar in New York to L’Abbatoire in Vancouver, more and more folks have been discovering and falling in love with the Manhattan all over again.

The Victoria Film Festival has ushered in the return of the craft cocktail with their festival Art of the Cocktail, a group of events dedicated to getting the unwashed masses to un-learn everything we adopted from Tom Cruise in Cocktail. AotC is a place where the uninitiated and aficionados

alike can schmooze with industry bigwigs like Clint Bell (participant of the fabled Spirits of Mexico competition) and Phillip Duff, (winner: Best Bartender, Venuez Dutch Bar Awards, 2009 & 2010,) at workshops that range from agave appreciation to a class in drinking etiquette aptly ti-tled The Fine Art of Not Drinking Like a Complete Chump. So, pull up a stool and double that gin martini; It’s gonna be a long haul.

Timeless EleganceBy jamie wild

Cocktails have always been a sophisticated classic. Women everywhere look forward to nights out with their girlfriends, sipping their favourite mixed drinks from fancy glasses gar-nished with fruity decorations. Their elegance can be seen from across any room, and are more than just a drink. Cock-tails are statements. A few key ingredients, (alcohol, sugars, bitters,) and other additions have created thousands of cock-tails that have graced bar-tops worldwide.

The first British book of Cocktail recipes was published in 1869: William Terrington’s Cooling Cups and Dainty Drinks. Although it was said to be a man’s drink in those days, there were women eager to drink these concoctions as well. Cathe-rine Gilbert Murdock, author of Domesticating Drink: Women, Men and Alcohol in America, argued that women’s at-home drinking contributed greatly to the trend of alcohol consump-tion in the twentieth century. She noted that it was the cocktail that “legitimized, as no other beverage would, alcohol con-sumption in the home.”

Old Hollywood also had a hand in the rising popularity of cocktails culture. The first well-to-do female characters almost al-ways had cocktails in their hands while up on the silver screen.

Women, though very sassy, were always portrayed as hav-ing a sophisticated air about them, and the image of the cocktail enhanced that.

From the French 75 in Casablanca, to Cosmopolitans on Sex and the City, cocktails still play an important role in film and continue to embody class and elegance.

Can I Fix You a Drink? Yes I Can By kelsey ewart

A timeless black dress, (let’s call it “the party dress”) subtle red lips, a glass half filled with ice and a mysterious liquid casually resting between thumb and forefinger, a handful of friends chuckling at tasteful yet hilarious jokes. This lady knows her stuff—she can walk into a room of important peo-ple and dazzle them all. This is the charming lady I imagine myself becoming. There’s a lot to do to get there, but tonight I will figure out how and with what to fill that glass.

I enjoy a drink or two at the end of a long day—a pint of beer, a glass of wine or cider. On hot days I seek Mojitos, and oc-casionally I sip Caesars with Sunday brunch. But these are drinks I have someone else make for me. I can throw cranber-ry and vodka or rum and coke into a glass. But, to become that party-dress-wearing-hilarious-charming lady, I need to be able to make something distinguished. I want it to be a classic, simple. I don’t want to scramble for ingredients when an un-expected visitor drops by and I offer, “Can I fix you a drink?”

I ask Google, “What is the classiest classic cocktail?” I get an onslaught of answers. There are so many different kinds of cocktails out there! Somehow I narrow it down to three (partly because I already have the ingredients to make them and

because they do not seem too complex): Tom Collins and Moscow Mule.

Tom Collins: there were different ways of making this drink. I stuck with the simplest. Two ounces of gin, a little bit of sugar, and five slices of lemon squeezed over ice, stirred together, and topped with club soda. I wasn’t expecting to love this drink. I am not a gin drinker. But Tom Collins, you have won me over! It was refreshing, not too sweet and not overly bitter…just right.

Moscow mule: I learned that this is a buck or mule cocktail which means it belongs to a family of drinks that are made with ginger ale or ginger beer and citrus juice. The Mosocow Mule is made with vodka—I used two ounces of vodka and three slices of lime squeezed into a glass over ice, topped with ginger beer. The result was delicious! By the end of this drink I was feeling mighty charming.

Making cocktails always seemed intimidating to attempt, that’s why I’ve left it to the professionals. I thought you had to have special tools, a liquor cabinet stocked with a variety of liquors. But these drinks were quick and easy. I can make great tasting, classy drinks for myself and friends with just a few simple ingredients. So while I have yet to find the perfect party dress, I feel I’ve started on the path to achieving that sophisticated vision of myself. Time now to invite the friends over to practice my new cocktail making skills—cheers!
