Preparation for Worship

God of Life: May your light shine on your people today,

As it shone in each moment of history.

May the light of your presence inspire our worship,

And inspire our lives,

To praise you and recognize you,

As source of all creation,

As strength that sustains,

As sap that nurtures,

As wisdom that foresees,

As clarity that discovers,

As love that understands,

As mercy that forgives…

May the light of your presence,

Eternal and inextinguishable,

Shine on us now and forever

Till the dawn of your Kingdom,

Present in each day.

We Gather in God’s Name on the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation

Voluntary Be Thou My Vision Bob Mitchell, Piper

Call to Worship

One: The Lord be with you.

Many: And also with you.

One: This is the day the Lord has made.

Many: Let us rejoice, and be glad in it!

Hymnal Dedication

One: To you, O God, we offer our thanks and praise. We know that your creative

power is the source of every good gift. Today, we take delight in the special

gift of these hymnals.

Many: Thank you for the gift of music that stirs our hearts, instructs our

minds, strengthens our spirits, and sets our bodies in motion.

Thank you for old songs that keep us connected with saints and

traditions from our past, and for new songs that create a legacy for

future generations.

One: Thank you for songs from our culture that express our heritage in familiar

melodies and rhythms, and for songs from other cultures that open us to the

variety of ways in which your people offer praise around the world.

All: To Your glory, and in the honor of the great cloud of witnesses who

have taught us to love and serve you, we dedicate these hymnals.

Hymn #275 A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

In the preface to the 1543 Genevan Psalter, John Calvin clearly stated his support for singing.

He wrote about two kinds of prayer: one with words alone, the other with singing. He went on

to say that “singing has great force and vigor to move and inflame [human hearts] to invoke and

praise God.” And further, “to have songs...which will be like spurs to incite us to pray to and

praise God, and to meditate on his works in order to love, fear, honor and glorify him.” In keep-

ing with Calvin’s understanding, our prayer of confession today is a sung prayer.

Leader: The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting unto everlasting. As far as the

East is from the West, so far has God removed our transgression from us.

In the name of Jesus Christ, we are all forgiven.

People: Thanks be to God.

Sermon The Ever-Changing Church Rev. Dr. Ben Trawick

A Litany for Reformation Sunday Compiled from the Confessions of the PC(USA)

One: We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church,i

the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins;

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.ii

ALL: We confess and acknowledge one God alone,

distinct in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost,

to whom alone we must cleave, and in whom alone we put our trust.iii

Choir: We believe that we belong−body and soul, in life and in death−

not to ourselves but to our faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.iv

Men: We believe that all things are governed by the Providence of God.v

Women: We believe that, the Lord our God was pleased to make

a second covenant of grace, wherein he freely offered unto sinners

life and salvation by Jesus Christ.vi

One: We believe that the chief end of humankind is to glorify God,

and to enjoy God forever.vii

ALL: We believe that there is but one only, the living and true God. God is

a Spirit, in and of himself infinite in being, glory, blessedness and

perfection, all sufficient, eternal, unchangeable, incomprehensible,

everywhere present, almighty, knowing all things, most wise, most

holy, most just, most merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and

abundant in goodness and truth.viii

Choir: The church’s commission, upon which its freedom is founded, consists in

delivering the message of the free grace of God to all people in Christ’s stead,

and therefore in the ministry of his own Word and work through sermon and

Sacrament.ix

Men: We believe that the life, death, resurrection, and promised coming

of Jesus Christ has set the pattern for the church’s mission.x

Women: We believe that unity is both a gift and an obligation for the church of Jesus

Christ. Through the work of God’s Spirit, unity is a binding force. At the

same time, unity must be earnestly pursued and sought. Our unity must

become visible to the world.

One: We believe that separation and hatred between people and groups is sin,

already conquered by Christ. Anything threatening our unity has no place

in the church.xi

ALL: With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in

life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus

our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy

Spirit. Amen.xii
