After several JEC Forums editions focu-sing on advances in design and simulation of composite materials in various industries, for the fi rst time JEC Forums becomes an event entirely dedicated to composites in the Au-tomotive industry. Hosted in Knoxville, home to the University of Tennessee and one of IAC-MI’s lead institutions, the event will bring new developments in automotive manufacturing and materials.

The Automotive industry remains by far the largest market for composite materials in the U.S., rendering it a key player when it comes to innovation and advancements in materials and manufacturing processes. The main challenges: raw material cost reduction, light-weighting, and achieving mass produc-tion, are direct consequences of environmen-tal requirements becoming more rigorous as concern about carbon emissions grows.

The use of carbon fi ber is an important part of the answer to these problematics but brings on its own set of issues that need to be dealt with, making the contemplated solutions complex.

The JEC Automotive Forums will present an extensive overview of the current trends and innovations thanks to a twofold program.

Why Knoxville ?JEC Forums 2016 will take place at the

Crowne Plaza. It is in close proximity with organizations such as Tennessee Valley Au-thority (TVA) and University of Tennessee Knoxville, and is within easy walking dis-tance of Old City, Market Square, etc. After having spent time sharing knowledge and networking at the JEC Forums International Conference on Automotive Technologies, enjoy the Knoxville area and seize the op-portunity to attend the football game on Oc-tober 15th at the University of Tennessee.

Workshops & tourThe second day will supplement these as-

pects with a more concrete approach thanks to various workshops focusing on light-weighting, CFRP failure analysis and additive manufactu-ring. These workshops involve presentations, case studies and Q&A. These workshops will be followed by a guided composite tour of ORNL’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility (MDF), as well as the University of Tennessee’s Fibers and Composites Manufacturing Facility (FCMF). The meeting point is at 1:30pm at the Crowne Plaza. Networking event

Private reception: Speakers from the confe-rence sessions, workshop hosts, and attendees are invited to a private evening reception on Oc-tober 13th 2016 at 5 pm. Organized and hosted by JEC Group, this reception represents an exclusive event allowing for more networking and business opportunities. Participants will be able to meet key contacts in a favorable setting and engage in productive meetings.

Networking breaks: Connect with the indus-try’s key decision-makers during the breaks that will take place between sessions.

Table-top areaExplore innovative projects, solutions and

services in the composite and automotive in-dustry. Discuss new trends, exchange views on best practices and network regionally and in-ternationally with the sponsors and exhibitors.

ConferenceThe fi rst day will offer two conference ses-

sions. The morning one will delve into the pos-sibilities of hybrid solutions in the Automotive industry, for exampe by combining lightweight materials with metals. During the afternoon, the challenges brought on by making carbon fi -ber an affordable solution for mass production in the automotive industry will be discussed.

Multimaterial Solutions in Automotive

With light-weighting remaining biggest challenge, part of the solution could come from a compromise between composites and metals. On a smaller scale, develo-ping hybrid structures in the form of toughened composites with better balanced mechanical properties is also key.

Light-weighting, hybridization, and adhesive bonding will be among main focuses of this session.

Incorporating Carbon Fiber in Structural Parts

The increased popularity of carbon fi ber is the main repercussion of the weight-sa-ving challenges but it brings on its own set of issues that need to be addressed. As environmental concerns and regulations become more stringent, repair and recycling of carbon fi ber reinforced thermoplastics have become priorities.

Friday, October 14th

Affordable Composites

Cost optimization is one of the key stakes for all industrial production, and even more specifi cally for automotive industry. This will be addressed through Introduction to Multi-Scale Material Modelling, Metal Replacement for Lightweighting & Cost Reduction, Multi-Scale Modeling for Affordable Composite Solutions (CFRP) and Additive Manufacturing (SLS & FDM ) of Reinforced Polymers.

Development and Industrial Commercialization of Composite Materials

Meeting the needs of the automotive industry in terms of innovation and development remains a challenge for the widespread adoption of composite materials. In an attempt to give an overview of the latest advances, this workshop will delve into Composite Molds and Tooling, Composite Systems and Materials as well as Bioderived Polymers, and will conclude with an interactive panel on the Industry Perspective on Commercialization.

Partnerships and Innovations in Composite Manufacturing

The Institute for Advanced Composites Manufacturing Innovation, IACMI, delivers a public-private partnership to increase domestic production capacity, grow manufacturing and create jobs across the US composite industry. As such, its leaders will present various Partnerships and Innovations, Technical Projects and their Results, and point out the Challenges and Opportunities of Composite Materials Recyclability.
