In past years, the conference has brought together leaders in prevention, education, treatment, research and recovery to present the latest development in their discipline. This learning opportunity will equip you with useful strategies that your organization can use to improve outcomes and best business practices in this changing environment, as well as provide strategies that will assist you in offering high quality, culturally competent services to your customers.

Professionals working in the fields of alcohol and other drug prevention and treatment, education, law enforcement and juvenile justice; members of community coalitions and faith-based organizations; others interested in promoting collaboration across disciplines and community sectors concerning problem gambling & AOD prevention, treatment research and recovery.

WSA: STARTING A PROBLEM GAMBLING PROGRAM/NATIONAL PROBLEM GAMBLING CERTIFICATION UPDATE (J. CLEGG) Jennifer Clegg, Gambling Specialist, LSW,MSW, NCGC-I, OCPS-II

This workshop will give participants information on starting a problem gambling program in their agency. Participants will learn about the National Certified Gambling Counselor (NCGC)Credential and get updates on the Ohio credentialing process for gambling.

WSB: UNDERSTANDING SUICIDE RISK AND PROBLEM GAMBLING (TBA)

WSC: PREVENTION: WORKING WITH OLDER ADULTSRoger Svendsen, M.S., C.P.P.RGambling is more accessible and more socially acceptable than ever before. Gaming destinations are marketed as inviting, climate controlled places to spend time with friends. Like everyone else, older adults need to understand the risks involved with gambling. This interactive session will: (1) provide an overview of gambling, an invisible problem among older adults; (2) provide a review of the risk and protective factors for gambling problems among older adults; (3) answer the questions Whether to, When and How Much for older adults; and (4) review prevention, intervention and treatment of gambling problems among older adults.

WSA: SUPERVISION: MAKING SENSE OF THE ACCREDITATION AND PRACTICE COMPONENTSJill Gomez, Instructor and Area Coordinator for Social Work and Human Services, LISW-S, LICDCRobert Ahern, Ph.D., LISW-SThis six hour workshop will review the regulatory requirements for supervision and offer practical guidelines for meeting the standards. The second part of the workshop will outline the types of supervision and offer strategies to integrate supervision elements into the clinical environment.

WSB: ETHICS & ADDICTION TREATMENTNan Franks, CEO, Alcoholism Council of the Cincinnati Area, NCADD, LICDC, LPCWhen we accept the title, privileges and responsibilities of our profession, we also agree — whether we know it or not — to adhere to its ethical principles and to accept oversight and regulation by a national and/or state board. We read the Ethical Standards as it breaks down our professional guidelines into categories, and willingly sign allegiance to it with the conviction that we are certainly ethical and will never get into trouble because of it or struggle with ethical concerns. Rarely is that the case. What seems simple is really quite complex. WSC: MEDICATION ASSISTED THERAPY (MAT) OF OPIOID DEPENDENCEPhillip Prior, M.D.Panel of Physicians and CliniciansParticipants will understand the scope and nature of addiction to opioids in the form of prescription pain medication and heroin. Physicians and clinical directors will discuss the effects of opiates on the brain and the benefits of medication-assisted treatment combined with psychosocial therapies. Considerations for special populations will include adolescents, seniors, pregnant women, and criminal justice reentry clients. Dr. Prior will review the newly released promising practice protocols for using buprenorphine and Suboxone in the treatment of opiate addiction and discussion will include the paradox of using medication-assisted treatment in a historically abstinence-based addiction treatment field.

WSD: TREATMENT AND TECHNOLOGY—ONE AGENCY’S VIEWSusan Fraker, Technology Assisted Care Coordinator, Wright State University- SARDI, NAD IV, CI & CTJulie Gentile, Medical Director, Wright State University – CAM, M.DThis course will review the use of Technology Assisted Care in behavioral health settings. Presenters will discuss some of the recent research as well as explain current uses.

WSE: HOUSE BILL 86: A GAME CHANGERAndre Imbrogno, ODRC Staff Counsel, Ohio Dept. of Rehabilitation & CorrectionDavid Diroll, Executive Director of the Ohio Criminal Sentencing CommissionJodi Demo-Hodgins, Executive Director, Crawford – Marion ADAMHS Board, LSWThis workshop will provide an overview of House Bill 86’s recent changes to the adult criminal code and Ohio’s prison law, including an update on ODRC’s implementation of key prison law provisions. In addition, Jodi Demo-Hodgins, will discuss the impact of sentencing reform as it relates to mental health and substance abuse treatment services and talk about the Board’s role in local reentry task force efforts.

PROBLEM GAMBLING PREVENTION MESSAGES AND PROGRAMSRoger Svendsen, M.S., C.P.P.RMost people don’t talk about gambling; they either do it or they don’t. This session will focus on initiating discussions and assisting people to: (1) make a clear decision whether to abstain from gambling or to gamble legally, socially, recreationally, occasionally and appropriately; (2) answer the questions Whether, When and How Much; (3) provide direction for intervening with someone whose gambling concerns you; (4) provide an introduction to problem gambling prevention, (5) provide a framework for prevention program planning, and (6) provide a review of effective prevention policies, programs and practices.

PROBLEM GAMBLING, PROBLEM MACHINES: ADDICTION BY DESIGN?Natasha Dow Schüll, Associate Professor of Science, Technology, and Society, MIT, Ph.D.Recent decades have seen a dramatic shift away from social forms of gambling played around roulette wheels and card tables to solitary gambling at electronic terminals. Machine gambling has become the most popular, profitable, and addictive form of wagering. Drawing on fifteen years of field research in Las Vegas among gambling addicts and the designers of the machines they play, anthropologist Natasha Dow Schüll explores the dynamic interplay between the evolving technological capacities of the gambling industry and the phenomenon of gambling addiction.

TREATING PROBLEM GAMBLING Jerry Bauerkemper, Executive Director, Nebraska Council on Compulsive Gambling, BS, CCGC, NCCG/PGRS This presentation will provide participants with knowledge of how to provide financial guidance to encourage and enhance recovery from Pathological Gambling. The workshop provides a basic understanding to why finances are important in gambling recovery and the role and steps counselors can play in the recovery process. Gambling focus group results and a basic understanding of the recovery timelines will also be discussed.

THRIVING IN AN ERA OF CHANGE: PROMOTING WELLNESS AND RECOVERY THROUGH RECOVERY-ORIENTED SYSTEMS OF CAREIjeoma Achara, President, Achara Consulting, Inc, PsyDThe landscape is changing for all health-related services. Providers, researchers, recovery advocates and system administrators are advocating for more flexible and integrated systems of care to promote community health, wellness and long-term recovery. This presentation will examine how developing recovery-oriented systems of care, positions providers and system administers to successfully navigate the changing healthcare environment. Dr. Achara will review the characteristics of recovery-oriented systems of care and their implications for all services and supports. Participants will learn about examples of innovative recovery-oriented practices emerging around the country. Finally, different approaches to developing recovery-oriented systems of care and their relative advantages and limitations will be explored.
