Whereas a certaine Ship Lately came into Rebellion Road and for Some Dayes ridd att anchor there without comeing one Shoare to decleare from whence they came or what theire Inten­tions were or to Make Entry of theire Ship according to Law the Governo r: & Councill thought fitt & did Send an order on board the Said Ship Comanding them Either to come one Shoare on Sight of it & Decleare to the Goverm*: what they were make Entry of theire Ship according to Law or to depart the harbour w t h:in fforty Eight howers after accordingly the Said Ship did weigh anchor as Soone as the wind would permitt, & Sailed out as Supposed to be Gonn, on which Certaine Masters of vesells then Rideing at Charles Towne Being Ready to Depart had Lysence to Saile but the Said Ship comeing this Day againe in Sight & Lay Hovering before the Harbour & are now as wee understand at anchor behind Sullivants Island w th:in three Leages of the Shoare & Not Knowing What theire Intentions were: These are therefore in theire Maj t l e s : Names, and the name of y e : Pallatine & the Rest of the Prop r s : of this Province to will & Require you one Sight hereof to Saile With the said vesell back to Charles Towne & not to Stirr ffrom thence till further order Whereof yw : are not to faile at yo r : uttmost perill M d : a Copy of the above order directed to Cap": John Richard­son Ma r : of the Sloope Sea fflower Cap t t : Issack Robinson M r. of the Ketch Speedwell Cap": Jn° : Taylor M r : of the Sloope Bon-adventure Saverally to Each of them Sent by the Provost Mar­shall

Ordered that Peter Skorder & Cent Direkson whoe arrived here in the aforesaid Ship Late Rideing in Rebellion road Doe forth-w t h : appeare before this board & on theire Oathes Declare the Best of theire knowledge concerneing the Said Shipp whoe appeareing Accordingly Deposeth as ffolloweth: The Deposition of Peter Skroder A Dane by Nation aged twenty four yeares or there abouts taken this twentyeth day of a'prill 1692: Decleares that on the twenty Ninth day of Jan r y : Last he the Said Deponent in Company w t h : Cent Direckson did See a Saile of the Island of assencion on which they made a signe w t h : two white Shirts upon which the vesell came nere who had alsoe business there as they understood to turne turtle for Provisions & they Desired the Ship to take them one board and Carry & put them one Shoare and they answereds it was a Christian worke and they would doe it & would eithr Putt them one Some Christian Shoare or one bard Some Christian Ship & after ah*: twenty four houers Stay att assencion they sett saile directly hither and that in the Lattitude of Surranam they mett w t h : a vessell under Dutch Collours mounted w t h : Six Guns or there­abouts w c h : they willingly would have spoken w t h : to have putt the Deponent one board of the Ship and to have Gotten Some Releife of Lyquors & Provisions from them, Butt the Dutchman avoided them and fireing a Shott through theire Sailes. they were afraide of them and soe forbeare the Chase & Saileing into the Lattetude of this Place the Question being putt amongst them­selves whether they Should Goe It was theire Generall Resolution to Come In here to Settle as Planters and Buy Plantations: and this Deponent further Sayeth y*: they Kept very good order w t h : Dayly Prayers peacable behavioure & that they did often Discource & aver that they nevere had done wrong to any Christian Nation & that in theire pasege from ascention they did touch at an Island Called ffarrdinando to water and did touch noe where nor Speake w t h : any Saile till he came nere this Barr Save onely the aforesd: Dutch,Ship and the ffirst Ship they Saw on this coast was the Richard & Mary Daniell Bradley Comander bound in hether from England and further this Deponent Saieth not :

Ttiis Day Seth Sothell Esq r appeared before this board and on his oath Did Decleare that hee was ^sonal ly present and did heare Wilson Dunston Gent about two howers before his Death Decleare y e : full & whole contents of a Nuncupative will dated the 2 d : August produced before this board as the Said Dunstons Will and that the Said Dunston was at the time of his Soe De-cleareing of ^ f e c t mind & Memory Landgrave Joseph Morton Likewise appeared before this board & on his oath did Decleare that he was ^sonal ly present and did heare said Dunston a Little before his Death Decleare all the ^ t iculars in the sd. Nuncupative Will

Respective Counties: It is therefore ordred that William Peter Esq r : Be Shereiffe for Colleton County & that Joseph Blake Esq r : be hereby Impowered to give him his oath accordingly : It is alsoe ordred that Henry auste Chataigner De Cramahe Esq r : be high Shereiffe of Craven County and that Mouns r : Paul Bru-neau be Hereby Impowered to give him his oath accordingly Whereas by the Rules & Instructions now Received from the R t t : Honob l e : the Lords and absolute Prop r s : of this Province wee are directed and Impowered to Call Assembleys of the men of this Province when and as often as to us Shall Seem Necessary for the peace & well Goverm*: of the Said Province and Wee Duely Considering the prsent State of this Cuntery have thought it necessary that an Assembly be Speedily Called to Consult of the Importent affayres of the Country It is therefore ordred that writts doe forthw t h: Issue to the Shereiffes off the Saverall Countyes of this part of the Province that Lyeth South & West of Cape ffeare for the due Election of Members to Serve in the Asembley

Ordred that M r : William Bower Late High Shereiffe of Colleton County be & is hereby Superseeded from the said office and y*: he Doe forthw t h: on Sight hereof Deliver to William Peter Esq1": now High Sheiriffe of the said County all writts & other papers he any way hath by vertue or Collour of the sd : office Whereas M r : John Berisford hath in his custody Divers records papers & writtings belonging to the Saverall officers of Corono r : and Clerke of the Crowne & peace: It is ordred that

the said John Berisford Doe forthw t h: on Sight hereof Deliver to Richard Conant Esq r : now Corono r: & Clerke of the Crowne and peace all & every the sd : Records Papers & Writtings belonging to the Said Savall offices & any taken by him under Colour or pretence of sd : offices and alsoe y1: the said John Berisford doe desist from acting in any or either of the Said offices Whereas by Instructions from the Pallatine & the rest of the Lords and Absolute Prop r s : of this Province We are authorized & Impowered to Nominate and appoint all officers in the Respect­ive Countyes that are not or Shall not be Comissioned under the hands and Seales of Some one or more of the Lords & absolute prop r s : of this Province Itt is this Day ordred that Doctor James Williams be Coronor of Colleton County & that Coll Joseph Blake be & is hereby Impowered to give Him his oath accordingly, and that M r : Hugh Hixt Doe forthw th: on Sight hereof Deliver to the said Docto r : James Williams all papers and Writtings that Hee had or Hath In his Custody under Collour and pretence of Said office, And that the Said Hugh Hixt Doe desist ffrom acting under Pretence of Said office. Whereas nothing can Conduce more to the peace tranquilety & prosperity of the Inhabitants of this Province then that all Indians within the Juris Dicksion of the Same Sould Bee made obedient to> Goverm1: and Senceble of The good Intentions of the Government towards them: It is thereffore ordred that Stephen Bull & Joseph Blake Esq r s : or either of them Doe use Such wayes and methods as to< them Shall Seem meett and Convenient ffor ordering all the Cassiques or Comanders of any nation of Indians under the protection of this Goverm*: to be att Charles Towne as Soone as possible may be to receive the Comands and orders of this Court Adjourned till tomorrow morneing 8 of the Clock

The Said Seth Sotholl Being Demanded by the Court if he owned or acknowledged this to be a Court and have Sufficient authoritye to Enquire & Determine the aforesaid matter in Defference, To which as before he Demurred by words of mouth to the Legallity of this Court as being a Prop1": and as not agreeable to his Maj t i e s : Charter and the agreem*: of the Prop r s : and Refused to answere any farther And the Sd : ' Seth Sothell being Likewise Demanded by the Court to give such or any other answere in Writting he the Said Seth Sothell utterly Refused the Same This Court in pursueance of the powers & Instructions to them given for a due Inquire & examinations into' the Grownds & rea­sons of all Complaints that they may the better be enabled to returne Such Report to theire Lord Ships as may give them full Light into whatsoever has past dureing the Late Disorders of the Province according to theire Lordships said Comands Doe think fitt and have ordred that the Said Paul Grimball doe pursue his Complaint and Bring w*: Evidences shall think ffitt before this Court which shall be heard & Examined ag*: the said Seth Sothell as in case of Nihil Cicit Adjourned till 2 of the Clock in the afternoone
