An overview of the postgraduateprogrammeM Sc (Applied chemistry) curriculam is designed tomeet the challenges of the modern industrializedsociety. Courses are offered both in theory andpracticals. This M Sc programme includes training incomputational chemistry and a practical course ininstrumental methods of analysis. The course oninstrumental methods of analysis trains the studentto work in an industrial laboratory. Many of our formerstudents are employed in leading industries.

The syllabus of the course is so designed that thestudents can successfully compete in national testslike NET conducted by UGC –CSIR. Students of M Scare encouraged to carry out the project work in leadingnational laboratories, IITs etc. This experience givesthem excellent exposure to pursue research.

Apart from the major areas of chemistry namelyInorganic, Organic, Physical and TheoreticalChemistry, Green chemistry, Catalysis, Organicsynthesis chemistry of natural products, Polymerchemistry etc. are offered as optional subjects.

Eligibility criteriaCandidates with B Sc chemistry /Polymer Chemistry/Industrial Chemistry with Physics and Mathematicssubsidiaries are eligible for admission to M Sc AppliedChemistry with at least 50% Marks for the concernedoptical subject (excluding subsidiaries).

DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

This Department was established in the year 1976. The Programmes we offer areM.Sc Mathematics, M.Phil Mathematics and Ph.D in Mathematics. Department hasproduced 9 PhD’s and 27 M.Phil’s so far.M.Sc Programme of this Department is on Pure Mathematics and many of ourstudents get selected at various prestigeous Research Institutes like TIFR, CMI,MATSCIENCE etc. Also a good number of teachers in colleges are former studentsof this Department.Since 1983, every year we have been conducting a prestigious lecture seriesprogramme entitled, “ P.Kesava Menon Memorial Lectures” instituted in thename of the Eminent Mathematician Late Dr. P. Kesava Menon. This Programmeis conducted as an Expository lecture series on a single theme, normallyconsisiting of 5 to 6 sessions spread over 3 days. Several eminent mathematiciansvisited our department under this programme including Prof. C.S. Seshadri (FRS).We regularly conduct programmes with a view to improving MathematicsEducation. One of the important activities in this direction is the MathematicsTalent Search and Nurture Programme (MTS&NP) funded by National Board forHigher Mathematics (NBHM). Under this programme around 40 students, whohave just completed their B.Sc, are given training for three weeks on foundationsof Mathematics every year. Several college teachers also get benefited byattending this programme. This is the 6th year we are running this programmewith the support of NBHM.Department hosted the 20th Annual Conference of the RamanujanMathematical Society in 2005. Prof. C.S. Seshadri (FRS), Prof. M.SReghunathan (FRS), Prof. R. Sridharan , Prof. S.G. Dani, Prof. R. Parimala,Prof. Manjul Bhargava, all Internationally well known Mathematicians gaveLecturers at this conference. As a recognition to our contribution to Mathematics teaching, UGC has selectedour department for the e-content development of the B.Sc Mathematics Course. We have a separate Department Library with a good collection of books andJournals. The Library is getting an annual support of Rs.7.5 Lakhs from theNBHM.The Department has six faculty members with specializations in thrust areas asshown:Prof. .V. DEPARTMENT OF LIFE SCIENCES

The genesis and growthThe University of Calicut, while submitting thedevelopmental proposal to the UGC, put a proposalto establish a new department of Life Sciences toteach Physiology, Biochemistry and Microbiologyin an integrated manner during the fifth planperiod. The UGC review committee stronglyrecommended for the same and consequently thisdepartment came into being, towards the fag endof the fifth plan period in February 1978. InitiallyM.Sc Courses in Microbiology and Physiology wereoffered. MSc in Life Sciences was run for a few yearsand subsequently, on recognizing the significance, specialisation in Physiology, Biochemistry andMicrobiology was introduced. At present, alongwith the three MSc. Courses, Mphil and Ph.Dprogrammes are also offered in these subjects.Students of the department, after their M.ScDegree, have been finding employment andresearch placements in academic/professionalInstitutions like Medical colleges, DRDO, NIMHANS,AIMS, Pharmaceutical Industries, Food technologyInstitutes, Agricultural and Forest departments etc. Also, considerable number of our students hadobtained admission to M.Tech. through entranceexamination, after their MSc. Many students of thisdepartment have attained their Ph.D degrees fromreputed Universities and Research Institutes in andout of the country. At present, about 6 of them areworking in famous Institutes of Germany insubjects like Neurophysiology, Molecular Biologyand Biochemistry, either for their doctoral or post-doc programmes.Besides teaching M.Sc. Courses, the departmentalso embarked on research training at Ph.D levelfrom the very inception, in all the three areas. Tillnow, 23 candidates have taken Ph.D from thisdepartment and 16 more are working for thedoctoral degree. Research guides of MedicalCollege, Amala Cancer Centre- Trichur, IISR- Calicutetc. have their guideship through our departmentfor the last several years. One unique feature of thePh.D training in this department has been theregistrations sought for Ph.D by the members ofthe faculty in Medical colleges, especially fromdepartments of Medicine, Surgery, Pathology etc.Four candidates have been awarded Ph.D inMedical faculty so far and six more are working forthe same.Research projects:- Research projects undertakenby the faculty of this department in the last 5 yearswere funded by ICMR and UGC. In the previousyears, department had research projects supportedby CSIR, STEC etc also.

Seminars/Workshops:- This is the onlydepartment in the campus that holds seminars onmedically relevant topics. “Seminar on Moderntrends in Medical Sciences”(2006), “NationalSeminar on Neuroscience”(2008), Seminar on theNational Science Day( 2006), seminar on “Lack ofNMDA receptor subtype selectivity forhippocampal long-term potentiation”, “Thetarhythm in learning” etc. have been the recent onesin the series. Talk on relevant topics in Biochemistryare conducted in connection with Dr. V.K.Sasidharan Endowement lecture for the last 3 years.

Computer LabComputer facility with high speed internet isavailable to students. Students are trained toutilize LCD projector for seminars/ presentationsAnimal house facilitiesConsidering the needs for animal house forbiomedical research, an animal house to breed andmaintain rats and mice has been established at avery early stage. Occasionally we are able to caterto the needs of other departments within theuniversity and also other institutes.Postgraduate Programmes offered in theDepartmentA. M.Sc BiochemistryB. MSc.
