23 July 2015 Issue 21/40 Woodroffe News Dear Families Welcome to Semester 2 at Woodroffe Primary School, especially to our many new families that have joined our school community. We are all very proud of our school and I thank staff who worked over the holiday break to oversee some major renovations at our school, that is, the interior painting, cleaning of all rooms and the remodeling of our front garden. Thanks to Mrs Sharon Challen and Mr Peter Bourke as well as Jenny and the team from Perfect Paving. Some parents have been discussing the uniform requirements of Woodroffe. Most agree that the uniform makes it much easier for children when deciding what to wear at school and is a great leveler i.e. one child does not dress “better” or “worse” than another. Another comment made, with which I agree, is that putting on a school uniform symbolizes to children that they are ready to learn and follow the school rules. Their concern is that not all parents, and therefore children, follow the agreed dress code to the same standard which puts pressure on those families who are trying their best to meet the code. I therefore urge our families to work cooperatively so all students can achieve while feeling secure they are a part of the Woodroffe team. Towards this end I include the endorsed dress code. In line with DET directives regarding compulsory school uniforms Woodroffe Primary School Council endorses the view that the school has a responsibility to ensure that appropriate dress standards are set and maintained. Therefore the wearing of school uniform by all students is a requirement of attendance at Woodroffe and is an integral part of the participation in the life of the school. The Council’s clear intention is to set a dress standard for the school that reflects a positive image of the school. A uniform dress code reinforces in students a pride in their own appearance, instills recognition of themselves as an integral part of the school community, and assists in developing pride in representing their school. Issues of equality, health and safety, and expense are also factors that contribute to the establishment of the Dress Code. The Dress Code applies during school hours, while travelling to and from school, and when students are on school excursions. School uniform Boys: School T/Shirt with Navy Blue Shorts Girls: School T/Shirt with Navy Blue Skort OR Navy Blue Shorts. Dress (Size 4 to 8 only) School windcheater jackets are also available. Children are encouraged to wear these during the cooler weather and have them available if they find the air-conditioning too fresh. Hats should provide adequate protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Baseball caps are not to be worm. Navy blue bucket hats and broad brim hats are sold at the office. Hats are to be worn during recess and lunch, outdoor class activities & excursions. Please label hats (and all their other property) with your child’s name. Appropriate footwear i.e. school shoes, joggers or closed sandals must be worn at school. Bare feet, thongs, masseur sandals, Crocs, high heeled shoes, boots or footwear that is otherwise deemed to pose a risk when students are engaged in active play must not be worn. Stud earrings and sleepers worn in the ears, plus watches are the only acceptable jewellery. Extreme hair colors and/or extreme hairstyles are not considered appropriate for school. Other than clear nail polish, cosmetics may not be worn at school. Telephone: (08) 89837600 Email: [email protected] www.woodroffeprimary.nt.edu.au

Woodroffe News

Dear Families

Welcome to Semester 2 at Woodroffe Primary School, especially to our many new families that have joined our school community.

Most agree that the uniform makes it much easier for

children when deciding what to wear at school and is a great leveler i.e. one child does not dress “better” or “worse” than another. Another comment made, with which I agree, is that putting on a school uniform symbolizes to children that they are ready to learn and follow the school rules. Thank you to the families who have already started to collect Woolworths Earn and Learn Stickers. Please also note the Wooodroffe App as explained on the opposite page that you can now download. This app will not only help you keep in touch with what is happening at school but you can let us know when your child is absent, make an appointment or give feedback (see eforms). Reminder to those students who are learning a musical instrument, your lessons will recommence on Monday at the usual times. Please remember to bring your instruments to school on Mondays. Today is National Day Tree and every year Bridge Toyota supports and promotes this day. This year they chose Woodroffe. Toyota was represented by Carol Fadelli, and with the support of Greening Australia assisted Mrs Canning’s 5/6 class as they planted 25 trees on our school grounds today. Toyota even supplied the students with T shirts and gardening gloves. This was an important event for us as we were able to replace some dangerous tress which we have removed over the last few years. Obviously the environment will benefit from the new trees as well as providing extra shade for our students in the playground. The children really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in this excellent program, some children have even given their tree a name. Thank you to Renee Prosser for her parent support to the school. Students took home their $100 sports vouchers yesterday. If your child did not receive one please visit www.sportvoucher.nt.goc.au, email [email protected] or call 1800817860 to make your enquiry.
