To observe and celebrate International Women’s Day, the college organized an awareness campaign on “Domestic Violence” in collaboration with District Legal Services Authority, Srinagar on 8th March 2017. The programme was presided over by the Principal, Prof. Dr. Yasmeen Ashai and the Guest speakers Ms. Mehreen Mushtaq, Additional Special Mobile Magistrate TFC Pantha Chowk and Moulvi Abdul Bari, Secretary District Legal Services Authority Srinagar. The programme began with recitation of Quran followed by Welcome Address by Prof. Irfana Rasool. Prof. Dr. Yasmeen Ashai, in her inaugural Address, stressed the importance of International Women’s Day and highlighted that men and women of conscience need to speak out against social evils that concern us all like domestic violence for the betterment of society. The guest speakers Ms. Mehreen Mushtaq and Moulvi Abdul Bari spoke at length about various socio-legal and religious dimensions of the conditions of women in general and Kashmir division in particular. They shared their knowledge, experience and legal expertise and interacted with the students and faculty members. The programme comprised of a students’ debate on the theme “Domestic Violence: Who is Responsible?” wherein the participants presented diverse views on the theme and related it with the International Women’s Day Campaign theme of 2017: Be Bold for Change. The Jury for adjudging the debate comprised of Ms. Mehreen Mushtaq, Prof. Dr. Tasmiah Mohi, Prof. Ajaz Ahmad Mir, and Prof. Dr. Sheikh Aijaz Bashir. Faizan Gul, Student BBA 3rd Semester secured the first position, Mehraj u din Hajam Bsc 3rd Year Student, secured the second rank and Rabiya Shafi student of BSc 3rd Sem was declared third in the debate competition. Consolation prize and Certificate of Participation were also distributed amongst the students. Dr. Shabeena Parveen proposed Vote of Thanks. The event and the stage was coordinated by Prof. Dr. Shabeena Kuttay.
