There was one new Guest Book entries on the YTC website. Keith Andrews from New London County checked in. He said “Look forward to attending meeting in June I hope - with possibility of membership - new at detecting and it's a blast.”

Facebook – a reminder that the club hosts a “members only” page on Facebook. The page is only viewable by YTC members and is a great way to share pictures, stories and coordinate activities. If you are not on our Facebook page, you are missing a lot of good finds and information from our members. Contact Matt Dakin or Mike Stanczyc to get added. We are up to 82 members. As a reminder, there is also a public Facebook page that is accessible to the general public. Make sure you know which one you are posting on. The Yankee Territory Coinshooters site is private. It has “Secret Group” in the header. The Yankee Territory Coin Shooters Metal Detecting Club is a public group and has that stated in the header.

The Members Only Section of the YTC Website is accessible by all members through one username and password. Contact any one of the board members if you need access.

There was no new FMDAC news. We need a volunteer for coffee duty. This would consist of bringing the two coffee makers to the

meetings and getting the coffee made. We have no volunteer for the June meeting. It is with great sorrow that we note the passing of long time life member and friend Richard

“Mac” MacRobbie. He will be missed.

The club has an incentive to attend the monthly meetings and other club events. Each time you come to a meeting or event, stop at the head table and get a ticket to fill out. Every meeting you attend or other event, you will get an additional ticket. At the end of the year a drawing will be held for one ounce silver rounds.

The planned hunt at Camp Isola Bella that was being set up by Jeff Pelletier was postponed due to inclement weather. Looking to possibly reschedule for September.

Website update: our current domain hosting is going to run out in July. Mike Caron has graciously volunteered to host the website. He is still working on content and migrating the webpage to the new host.

We are still looking for a volunteer to take over the role of treasurer after the current year. Katie will be retiring from the position at the end of the term and we need to have a volunteer to train under her while she is still around.

Dave G has sent out and provided hard copies at the meeting, surveys looking for input/suggestions on ways to possibly improve the Polar Bear hunt. Members are encouraged to fill out the sur-veys so we can help make the event better in the future.

The YTC handbook is complete and is available on Facebook. Many thanks to Bruce and Rick Browne for all the hard work put in to updating our handbook.

New Business

A discussion was had concerning the natural finds hunt that Roger Moyles had set up. There were some finds, mostly farm implement relics. There was an Indian head penny and a silver dime found. The farmer said we could come back. He also refunded the hunt fee, which was very nice of him. Thanks Roger for setting this up.

A review of the natural finds hunt at the J.N. Webster Boy Scout Camp was discussed. There were lots of coins found, silver jewelry, 3 gold rings, a large cent and silver coins were all found on the parade field in addition to some other relics that were found about the property. We raised quite a bit of money that was donated back to the Boy Scouts. We are looking to have another Boy Scout camp hunt in the Fall (Camp Mattituck). Thanks to Jeff and Katie for setting up the hunt.

The dates have been set for the annual Hammonassett and Rocky Neck natural finds beach hunts. They are set of July 16th for Hammonassett (July 23rd rain date) and August 13th for Rocky Neck (rain date August 30th)

Mentoring Program – Any new members who are looking for advice on specific detectors or any-thing else are encouraged to contact Dave G. so that he can get you hooked up with the appro-priate individual in the club.

More upcoming meeting programs: Lance Kozikowsky will be the August meeting topic. He is a Blacksmith, Tinsmith and Coppersmith at Sturbridge. He has also worked at the New Gate pris-on museum. He does talks on revolutionary war blacksmithing and the revolutionary war. He is a very engaging speaker and should make for a great presentation. He does have a speaking fee, so we would be looking for donations at the door. More details to follow.

The topic of the evening was a talk given by member Paul Ranieri. Paul gave a talk on the origins of silver Cobbs, the role played by Christopher Columbus in the early exploration of North America and the manufacture of early silver coins. Paul brought in some of his own collection to show the variety of coins and various sources of literature. It was a very good presentation. Thanks Paul.

Anyone having Boy Scout neckerchief slides that they want to donate, please bring them to the meeting and get them to Jeff Calzarette. These will be donated back to the scouts and rumor has it that they will be very appreciative to get them back. This also helps with the goodwill that would allow us to hunt other Boy Scout properties in the future.

A discussion was had concerning ticks and the many diseases that they carry. Methods of preven-tion were also discussed and included bug repellants that contain DEET and the clothing treat-ment Pyrethrum. Protect yourself when you are out in the woods.

The following individuals completed Level 1 of the Challenge list: Jeff Calzarette and Dave Gregorski. Level 1 & 2 were completed by Roger Moyles and Vince DiBattista. Congratula-tions to all of these guys.

Thanks to Matt Heath for running the 50/50 and coin raffles. Raffles: 50/50 – Paul Ranieri Silver Dollar – Bruce Morris Silver half dollar – Keith Massimino Attendance Draw – Martin Lysomirske Meeting adjourned around 9:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted: Michael Stanczyc

Checker Board By Bill Wright

JoJo Lantiegne: 1786 Half Real – Found in a friend’s yard. This was found after kicking a tree out of the way. Ray Dapkus: 1830 Capped Bust Half Dime – This was found at the Club Hunt at the Boy Scout camp. Ray’s detector wasn’t working well. 20 minutes before the end of the hunt, Ray found this coin about 25 feet from where a Boy Scout knife was found. Mike Stanczyc: 1900 Barber Dime – Found at a school in Granby that has been closed for a couple of years. Jim Mauro: Spill of 6 Coppers, Colonials, Large Cent etc. – After not finding much all day, Jim and Jo Jo checked out a cellar hole area. This was found in a penned in area across the road. Matt Dakin: 1869 Shield Nickel – Matt was pleasantly surprised when a nickel signal turned in to a Shield Nickel. Phil Skewes: 1918 French Coin – Found at a State Park in the dry sand. Dave Gregorski: $1 Las Vegas Token from 1980 – Old school and Dave was hoping for old silver. Phil Skewes: 18K Man’s Ring – A nice find made at the Scout Camp in the Parade field. Bruce Morris: Tungsten Carbide Ring – Found in Cancun, this was thought to be White Gold. Roger Moyles: Toy Soldier – Found in Rhode Island in a yard Roger has detected several times. JoJo Lantiegne: Civil War Era Infantry Button – This was found about 50 feet from where the Colonial Copper spill was found. August Meeting Program: Revolutionary War enthusiast Lance Kosikowski will be

our guest speaker.

He will portray colonial blacksmith Stephen Buckland of East Hartford, turned Captain, who joined in the war against England. He will be dressed in period garb and talk about the life and times during this period of American history. He will bring with him an as-sortment of relics and artifacts to present including period rifles and bladed weaponry. Lance has a vast background in early American history, is a blacksmith, a tinsmith and a copper smith. He has worked at Sturbridge Village, as well as Old New-Gate Prison. Those attending this meeting are encouraged to bring in their Revolutionary War arti-facts, as well as other Colonial period relics to add to what will be an exciting meeting.

Please note, to help offset the cost of this meeting program a donation box will be set up at the entrance of the meeting. $2 is the suggested range we are asking for people to donate who attend the meeting. Thanks!

Members, John Cabral, Allyson Cohen, Laura Kucharzyk, Jeff Pelletier, and Rick Walauski at the Blackthorne Treasure Weekend, this past weekend.

Home Restoration Yields Old Coins

Workers restoring the historic Thomas Hale Homestead in Glastonbury (CT) came upon a couple of old coins – a 1766 Irish copper, and a 1787 Fugio cent. They were found while dismantling the original main doorframe. In Colonial and early American times, it was a common gesture of hope for ‘Good Luck’ when coins were hidden in the door frame of a new home, usually in the lintel (top crosspiece). Fugio cents were the first coins officially issued by the United States. The design and/or legends are often credited to Benjamin Franklin. The implied themes are unity (“We Are One” with a chain of 13 links), independence (“Mind Your Business”) and “Fugio” with a sundial, suggesting ‘time flies’. [From a report in the 4/16/17 Hartford Courant, plus personal knowledge.] Dave G.

Detecting-speak and Other Gems

When a treasure hunter says ‘my wife’s detector is better than mine’, he means his wife always finds more coins than he does.

When a THer says ‘that park is completely worked out…there’s nothing left to find’, he means ‘I found 125 coins there last week, and want it all to myself’. If you were another person, would you like to be a friend of yours? The reason a dog has so many friends is that he wags his tail and not his tongue. The best possession one may have is a true friend. ‘Goldfish don’t like Jell-O’…from a 5-year-old. The grass plug goes back with the green side up. [Reprinted in part from the Indian Territory THers club newsletter, July, 2001.]
