Probe Special Feature: Member Profile.

Matt Dakin

Name: Matt Dakin Board of Directors, Club President YTC Member since April 8, 2008 Favorite thing to do besides MD’ing: Researching finds, And finding new equipment to try out. What machines do you own: Mine lab e Trac (primary) Garrett At Pro (backup/water) Favorite places to hunt-Water or Dirt: DIRT—Nothing beats finding an old property and getting an idea of its history and usage based on the items lost or dropped. If you could hunt anywhere in the world, where would it be: I’d love to take one of those MD trips

to England and try and turn up some Roman/Ancient/Bronze age relics, heck, I’d even settle for Medieval. If you could MD with anyone, who would that be: The Stealth Diggers or The Hoover Boys! They seem to have a blast while out detecting. Who is your favorite hunt buddy: My Son Joshua! What was the largest, quantity wise, find you made: Large amount of coins would be a roll of clad dimes. Largest dollar value wise would be the 1877 IHP. Strangest item found: Probably someone’s pet rodent buried in a coffee can, covered in colored foil(I

re-buried it!)

What do you like most about MD’ing: I like visiting new places and sites, finding unique items that after researching enlightens me with a whole new aspect or part of history I never Knew about.

Thank You Matt for the interesting Bio. Please submit your bio to the

newsletter Editor Now.

There was one new Guest Book entries on the YTC website. Matthew Shea from Three Rivers MA checked in and said “Found you through MetalDetector.com email newsletter search for clubs. There was no new correspondence or FMDAC news.

Dave Bergeron dropped off an interesting article he had cut out from the April 14

between the author and a coin dealer concerning the value of his coins and had some advice about selling coins. If you are interested in the article stop by the head table and see Mike Stanczyc.

Upcoming Hunts

There are a couple beach hunts upcoming over the summer. Currently the hunt at Rocky Neck State Park is scheduled for July 24

th and will be hosted by Vince DiBattista

and the hunt at Hammonasset beach is scheduled for August 7th. Keep an eye out in future issues of the Probe and at meetings for updates as the hunts get closer

II. Old Business

Any club member may attend the executive board meetings. The meetings are usu-ally held the week before the regular club meeting. If you have an interest in attending, you can contact any member of the board for the date, time and place. Contact information for the board members is listed in the Probe.

The club has an incentive to attend the monthly meetings and other club events. Each time you come to a meeting or event, stop at the head table and get a ticket to fill out. Every meeting you attend or other event, you will get an additional ticket. At the end of the year a drawing will be held for one ounce silver rounds.

T-shirt and hat update: Dave G gave an update on the YTC hats and shirts. The shirt and hats have been completed however there was not enough time to pick them up and sort them out before the last meeting. The items will be distributed to those who ordered them at the June meeting.

This year is the club’s 40th Anniversary. We have an event planned for after the August meeting. We will be having the

conducted in the dark, looking for planted surface finds. The Board was looking for $200 to purchase prizes, based on approximately 40 people attending. The motion was approved. More details will be provided as we get closer.

We will be playing the “Metal Detecting Game” at the September meeting. For those who have not participated before, it is a board that is set up to simulate “digging” for prizes. It has been a lot of fun when we have done it in the past. If you have any prize donations to contribute, please get them to any of the Board members or Ken Faulkner, since he agreed to run it. More details to follow. Thanks Ken.

The contract is in place to continue to hold the meetings at the Pitkin Center for 2017. The meetings will be in the larger banquet room.

The Probe has been a work in progress and keeps improving with every edition. If you have any feedback, please let Bruce Kramer know. He is always looking for ways to make it a better product. Along those lines, Bruce has requested that people submit their biographies, if you want, to go into the Probe as a way of getting to know your other club members. We are starting with the Board members, but I’m sure Bruce would be happy to accept any entries. . fed and refreshed for the meeting, Bob Brock, John Cabral & Phil Skewes. We are looking for a new volunteers to take over the duties of making the coffee for the meetings. It is a great way to contribute to the club that is relatively painless.

. New Business We have had some long time volunteers that have been helping with the food and drinks for the monthly meetings. Many thanks to those individuals who help keep us fed and re-freshed for the meeting, Bob Brock, John Cabral & Phil Skewes. We are looking for a new volunteers to take over the duties of making the coffee for the meetings. It is a great way to contribute to the club that is relatively painless.

B.O.N.E. hunt recap – this is an annual multi day hunt that is held in New Hampshire every year and is a combination of seeded and natural hunts as well as vendor displays. We had several members attend and some of the comments were that a great time was had, not much on the natural finds, same people show up every year, good friends, the seeded hunt was great. John Cabral won an Ace 150 and an AT Pro. The event was attended by John Cabral, Jeff Pelletier, Rich Walauski and Allyson Cohen.

Dave Wise commented on the Digging in New England (D.I.N.E.) hunt. Over $6,000 was raised for local charities. Jay Mahoney attended and found a KG1. Some other coppers and a Reale were found.

The P.O. Box was renewed for $82 for the year.

Richard MacRobbie has been feeling a bit under the weather lately. A card was sent to him with Best Wishes for a Speedy Recovery.

Jeff Pelletier had obtained some old P.O. Box covers. He has agreed to raffle one off in the near future with half of the proceeds going to the American School for the Deaf and half to the YTC club. The box is beautiful (see picture) and should result in a good donation to both entities. Thanks for the donation Jeff.

Dave G. is looking for donations of scout related items that were found at the Boy Scout camp hunt. He is looking to put them into a display to donate back to the Boy Scouts. If you have anything you would like to contribute, please see Dave. I am sure we can get enough neckerchief slides, looking for the more unique items.

Riker Boxes – Matt has purchased these in the past and is looking to see if there is any interest in doing a bulk order again. Please see Matt if you are interested. He said he has used them in the past to put together displays that he has given back to homeowner. Works great for getting additional permissions. They are also great at displaying you finds for friends and family to marvel at! (see picture)

Bruce Kramer has offered to purchase YTC embroidered patches (approx. 3 ½” round) and sell them back to club member with a portion of the proceeds to go back to the club. Let Bruce know if you are interested.

Upcoming meeting programs: June – Mike Russo will discuss a strategy on when to buy and sell your precious metals. He will also evaluate any jewelry you bring in and have ques-tions about, July – Detector Demo day, August – 40

th anniversary party with a Moonlight

Madness hunt & September – the Metal Detecting Game, we are looking for donations to fill the board.

The topic of discussion for the evening was presented by David Naumec and was our annual update on the progress on the investigation of the Pequot War. Several club members have been volunteering time over the past few years, helping the researchers out with their metal detecting skills. It was very interesting to see the continued progress.

The following individuals finished various levels of the Challenge Hunts: Matt Poling, John Cabral and Rick Yingling have completed Levels 1&2, Dave Gregorski and Matt Dakin have completed Level 2 and Roger Moyles completed Level 3.

A Short Story By Dave Gregorski

Over the years, I’ve shared a number of detecting stories where a new site had immense promise, on-ly to have my hopes dashed (and maybe the reader disappointed) when the ‘finding’ was poor. Well, on June 4, 2016, the ‘detecting faeries’ decided to even the score a bit. We ventured onto a flat 2 acres, probably part of Keney Park, abutting an older neighborhood. The

grass was quite high, with areas not so much, which is where I concentrated. At about the hour mark, I

experienced a first in my detecting career. I pulled out a Merc, the shiny edges showing from the dirt

clump. Nice. 2 feet away, another high-end signal, and another Merc came up! Another foot away, an-

other good signal…and the ‘greedy little David’ part of me whispered...’maybe another Merc’? And it

was! So within a full stride, 3 Mercs. Can’t wait until next March when the grass is packed down from

the snow, to return.
