BRIGHTON NATIONALSPEED TRIALS
Held under the General Regulations of the R.A.C. Motor Sport AssociationLtd. (incorporating the provisions 0/ the International Sporting Code 0/
the F.I.A.)
The Brighton Half MileIn 1905 that great Brightonian, the late Sir Harry Preston, persuaded the
Town Council to lay a motor racing track, a tarmac surfaced road andthe first of its kind, along the sea front between the Palace Pier to withina quarter of a mile of Black Rock. It was named the Madeira Road, andwas the venue for the first Brighton Speed Trials in 1905. The MadeiraTerrace, the elevated walk. running along the sea front, made a splendidgrandstand, and in Sir Harry's words "thousands of people watched theraces from there. and all Brighton and half England talked of nothingelse during those four exciting days".
Eighteen years were to pass before another meeting took place, when. onJuly 14. 1923. the Brighton and Hove Motor Cycle and Light Car Cluborganised an open event. The start was placed at the Palace Pier end andcompetitors matched against one another in a series of untimed "knockout"races, a system that caused some dissatisfaction. This was abandoned in1924 when the Club decided upon a measured half mile with a standingstart, over which competitors were run in pairs and individually timed.
Perhaps the police ban on speed trials on public roads in 1925 wouldexplain why there were no further meetings until 1932. when someoneremembered that the Madeira Drive was Corporation property and notsubject to the ban. The enterprising Brighton and Hove Motor Clubobtained permission from the Corporation to use it, switched their annualspeed trials from Brooklands to Brighton. and held them without inter-ruption until 1938.
The finest exponents in the art of getaway had competed over theBrighton Half Mile. but if one had to name one above all others it wouldbe the motor cyclist. the late Eric Fernihough, who held the world'srecords, both solo and sidecar, over the standing and flying start half-a-mile,on his self-prepared supercharged and unsupercharged 996 cc. BroughSuperiors; he set a course record of 20.00 sees. in 1936.
After World War II the Speed Trials were run over a distance of I kilo-metre until 1979, so it was not until 1980, when the distance reverted tohalf-a-mile, that Fernihough's 1936 record was attacked. Not surprisinglyit was then broken both by cars and motor cycles, having stood for 44 years.

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR OF BRIGHTONCOUNCILWR GEOFFREY THEOBALD, F.R.Lc.s.
I am most pleased to have the opportunity of sending thismessage of greeting and goodwill to all who are to be present onMadeira Drive on Saturday, 11th September, to participate in,or to witness, the 1982 Brighton National Speed Trials.
There is no doubt in my mind that while Madeira Drive isthe venue for what seems a never-ending succession of eventsattracting large audiences of sightseers, the Speed Trials providethe most exciting occasion for the general spectator. What maybe a little less obvious but is certainly equally true, is that noother event demands greater technical skill and judgement by thecompetitors.
The Mayoress joins me in this message of greeting, and to-gether we look forward to being present to witness the event.
GEOFFREY THEOBALD
