What’s in a name? The village on the river was originally known as Wyndham,

named after a British General and Member of Parliament, Sir

Henry Wyndham. In 1909, the village was renamed Werribee

after the river which had been so important to its growth.

In 1994, as a result of a major restructure of Victoria’s Local

Government Areas, the region was declared Wyndham City.

History of the regionWerribee, Point Cook and surrounding suburbs have played a significant role in

the history of Australia. From ancient Aboriginal culture to pioneering pastoralists

and courageous aviators there are many stories to tell and much to learn.

In the beginning

Our region’s original Aboriginal inhabitants

had a name for the river that flowed through

the plains of Iramoo. This name was

“Werribee”, meaning spine or backbone,

and the Werribee River itself provided a

tribal boundary between the territories of

neighbouring Aboriginal clans.

Explorers and settlers

In December 1824, explorers Hume and

Hovell camped in the Werribee area. On their

return to Sydney they presented a glowing

report of the countryside. In later years the

river provided a reliable water supply and a

much needed overnight stop for the journey

between the developing settlements of

Melbourne and Geelong.

A small village soon grew around the

Werribee River.

In the 1840s Thomas Chirnside moved

to the area, later building the elaborate

Italianate style mansion that is now the

jewel in the crown of the Werribee Park

Tourism Precinct.

Werribee’s significance as a town was

greatly enhanced in 1857 with the

construction of the first railway station

between Melbourne and Geelong.

Little River A hidden gem

Little River was located on the original

Geelong to Melbourne highway with the

Traveller’s Rest Inn providing a welcome

stop for the weary traveller. Built in 1839

the Inn was joined by a Post Office in

1858 and a railway station in 1876.

At Mount Rothwell, near Little River,

a mysterious semi-circular arrangement

of rocks now known as Wurdi Youang

was uncovered in 2011. Age is unknown

but experts believe the rocks align to the

setting sun at the solstices and equinox.

Today Little River is still a small town,

popular with tree changers and

filmmakers. Many well-known films and

television shows such as Mad Max,

Blue Heelers and Ned Kelly were filmed

nearby. Why not challenge yourself to

find the backdrop of your favourite movie

scenes?

Werribee Mansion

Werribee Mansion was completed by wealthy pastoralists, the Chirnside family in 1877. Built in the Italianate architecture style, the major rooms have been restored to the late Victorian era and filled with many period furnishings and day to day possessions. Evening plays are also available. Please ring 9742 3068 for further information.

The majestic formal gardens feature a colourful parterre, ornamental lake and grotto, glasshouses, heritage-listed trees and expansive lawns. Whether you relax with a picnic or explore with enthusiasm, the formal gardens are a secret oasis awaiting discovery.

Werribee Park Sculpture Walk

The Werribee Park Sculpture Walk features a collection of works by Australia’s leading sculptors located on a walking trail leading from the Mansion past the farm down to the Werribee River.

Planted on the river floodplain, in the late 1800s, the original orchard was a major source of fruit for the Chirnside family. The renewal project, to preserve and restore the orchard, starting with the planting of 120 new trees, is a joint effort by the Werribee Park Heritage Orchard and Parks Victoria.

The Farmyard was the original working heart of the estate.

Wander through and appreciate life from the worker’s perspective. These earlier buildings provide an interesting contrast to the elaborate Mansion.

Victoria State Rose Garden

The Victoria State Rose Garden features 5,000 roses arranged in several features: a Tudor Rose, a Federation Leaf, the David Austin Bud, and the Heritage Border. The roses are best seen from November to April.

Transport from Melbourne by shuttle bus can be arranged. Please ring 9748 5094.

Open daily from 10:00am. K Road, Werribee VIC 3030 Melways ref map 201 D1.

Visit Werribee Park and discover the story of an Australian pastoral empire. Explore the architecture and interiors of Werribee Mansion. Stroll through the beautiful formal gardens and open park land.

Beach picnic area

The beach picnic area is the perfect place for a family picnic with free gas BBQs, picnic tables, shade shelters, toilets, a children’s playground and beach access. The park is crossed by kilometres of mowed grass tracks and good walking is available along the beach at low tide.

Birdlife

Each year, thousands of migratory birds arrive from the northern hemisphere winter to enjoy the wetlands habitat of Port Phillip Bay. Numbers reach a peak between September and March.

From the bird hide at Spectacle Lake one is likely to see waders and other waterbirds.

Cheetham Wetlands

Nearby Cheetham Wetlands are also a natural bird haven, formed from the salt marshes and lagoons of Skeleton Creek. This landscape displays distant views of the city and the You Yangs as a backdrop. The adventurous will enjoy the magnificent 360 degree view from the Tower built as a dedication to “Migration and Aspirations”.
