celebrate the Torah. We will all begin by eating plenty

(see Rabbi’s letter for schedule of events)
On Wednesday, May 15th
Shavuot service begins at 9:30am,
with Yom Tov Services, and Yizkor.
Iyar - Sivan 5773 May 2013
In two weeks, we will join together to celebrate Shavuot, the holiday when we celebrate the giving of the
Torah.
Now, something very special took place amongst the Jewish people that preceded the giving of the Torah.
Exodus tells the story:
On the third new moon after the Israelites had gone forth from the land of Egypt, on that very day, they
entered the wilderness of Sinai. Having journeyed from Rephidim, they entered the wilderness of Sinai and
encamped in the wilderness. Israel encamped there in front of the mountain. (Exodus 19:1-2)
In English, the special event is obscured, but in Hebrew, we can see it. The Torah does not say that the
Israelites camped using the plural form of the verb, but rather, the Torah uses the singular form of the verb.
Our rabbis tell us that the Israelites camped as one. At that moment, we all came together as one people to
receive the Torah. And then the Holy Blessed One said, "Behold, this is the hour that I will give the Torah to
my children." (Vayikra Rabbah 9:9)
The Holy One was waiting for us to join together before giving us the Torah. Amazing! Our joining
together became the catalyst for God's revelation!
So this Shavuot, let us follow in the holy ways of our ancestors and join together once again to celebrate the
giving of the Torah. Everyone, of all ages and walks of life, is welcome to come to Ohavay Zion
Synagogue’s Torah celebration.
On Tuesday, May 14th at 6:00 pm, we will all begin by eating plenty of pizza and fabulous dairy desserts.
(Please RSVP to OZS at [email protected] for the Pizza Dinner.)
Beginning at 6:30 pm, children are welcome to join Ilona Szekely for a fun art project in the Kids' Library.
For adults, there will be a number of learning sessions throughout the night.
To begin, the education committee has planned a teaching on Jewish views related to burial practices,
mourning and the afterlife, which I will present.
After that, we will have a special treat as we learn from some of our high school seniors. Before they head
off to college, they will honor us with their teaching of Torah.
At 8:30 pm, we will light the holiday candles and daven Maariv.
At 9:00 pm, the learning will resume as Rabbi Wortman, Rafi Finkel, and Rabbi Smith bless us with their
wonderful teachings. The learning will continue throughout the night until the dawn, and all are very
welcome to attend.
On Wednesday, May 15th at 9:30am, we will celebrate Shavuot with Yom Tov services. During the Torah
reading, we will hear the Decalogue, and at the end of the Torah service, we will honor our loved ones who
have passed away, with Yizkor (approximately 11:30am).
This Shavuot, may we join together as one community as we camped together as one at Sinai.
Chag Sameach!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Iyar - Sivan 5773 May 2013
An organization like OZS can thrive only through the efforts of volunteers. Among the many who perform essential
functions, none are more important than the officers and Board of Trustees, who work to ensure our financial and
organizational stability. Most serve two-year terms, with Trustees eligible to serve three consecutive terms. Unlike
many synagogues, where some members compete to attain positions of power, often dividing the congregation with
heated election campaigns, our members are more interested in serving a unified and harmonious synagogue. In fact,
we often have to work hard to persuade the best people to serve, but this means that our transitions are smooth. This
year, the nominating committee identified a terrific slate of members to fill the vacant slots, which the Board of
Trustees approved at its April meeting. They will take office on July 1.
We will celebrate the new and departing officers and board members together at the installation in August, but I would
like to recognize them in print this month.
First of all, I would like to offer thanks to those officers and board members who are concluding their terms. Beth
Goldstein has served on the board, as 2nd and then 1st Vice President, as President, and for the past two years as Past
President; her contributions to OZS are incalculable, and her wise counsel will be missed. Leanne Zimmerman is
stepping down from the post of Secretary, which she has filled admirably for the past two years, to accept some
important new responsibilities at her school. We are also losing the services of three trustees, Mike Mayer, Howard
Rackmil, and Ricki Rosenberg; they will be missed.
Continuing in the role of Trustee are seven dedicated members: Bennett Bayer, Lisa Satin, David Bardach, Debbie
Aminoff, David Feinberg, Mark Rubin, and Jeffrey Siegel.
Joining the Board of Trustees for two-year terms are four new members: Janice Crane, Teri Harper, and Constantine
Vulakh. Also coming on board as a mid-term replacement for the next year is Marilyn Swan. We are grateful for their
willingness to serve.
As usual every second year, the list of officers will change on July 1, with some new names, and others changing
positions. Our new president, following four years as 2nd and 1st Vice President, will be Shirley Bryan. Moving up
from 2nd VP to 1st VP will be Simone Salomon, and joining the Executive Committee as 2nd Vice President (resigning
her appointment as Trustee) is Kathy Grossman. Mike Ades will begin his first full term as Treasurer, and joining the
Board as Secretary is Liza Goldenberg. I will remain on the Executive Committee as Past President.
As always, officers and trustees welcome your thoughts. Contact us with concerns, suggestions, or even to tell us
we’re doing a good job!
Jon Glixon, President

quest for nuclear weapons as well as the Iranian infiltration into Latin America. He has called for the fair treatment of Israel
at all U.N. venues, spoken out against global human rights abuses.

This year, Ohavay Zion Synagogue has engaged in a fascinating exploration of the Christian Bible. We have
learned a great deal about Christianity, and we have also discovered a lot about our own religion.
This May we will conclude our year of study with an exploration of the books of Acts and Revelation. In the
book of Acts, we will hear an interesting perspective on how and why Christians and Jews went their
separate ways. In the book of Revelation, we will delve into an apocalyptic text, with its powerful and
frightening imagery.
The classes will be held at Ohavay Zion Synagogue on the evenings of Monday, May 6th and Thursday,
May 23rd from 7:00 to 8:30pm. All are welcome!
