CALEA AND THE ACCREDITATION
PROCESS
WHAT IS CALEA?
• The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) was created in 1979 through combined efforts of four national law enforcement organizations.
THE PURPOSE OF CALEA
• The purpose is two-fold:
– Develop a set of standards in police management and services.
– Establish and administer a process through which law enforcement agencies can voluntarily demonstrate that they meet those standards.
THE ACCREDITATION PROCESS
• The process can be broken down into two parts:– The Standards
• The building blocks around which everything else evolves.
– The Process• Provides the blueprint and mortar to shape the standards into
forms that are sturdy, useful and lasting for the agency.
5 PHASES OF ACCREDITATION
• Application
• Self-Assessment (459 Standards)
• On-Site Assessment
• Commission Review/Decision
• Maintaining Compliance– (Re-accreditation every 3 years)
ACCREDITATION BENEFITS
• National Recognition
• Defined lines of authority
• Consistency
• Clear Communication and Operations
• Strong defense against lawsuits/complaints
• BOTTOM LINE: PROFESIONALISM
OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TAXATION
• MISSION STATEMENT:
– "To provide quality service to Ohio taxpayers by helping them comply with their tax responsibilities and by fairly applying the tax law.”
