OKCS Newsletter February 2, 2017
2016 Tax Receipts Further to the information provided by the OKCS Society Board in our February 2015 newsletter (printed below), we are still not in a position
to issue Donation Receipts for OKCS Society fees.
A ruling by the Canada Revenue Agency resulted in three alternative school societies being significantly penalized for issuing donation re-
ceipts. A legal challenge to the ruling by the alternative schools and other interested parties, including OKCS Society, is underway. If this is
successful, donation receipts will be issued at a later date. Donation
receipts can be claimed within five years of the actual donation date.
Child Fitness Tax Credit Receipts will be sent home, by February
15th, for students who played, and paid their fees, on our sports' teams in 2016. Students are only eligible for a receipt if they
were under 16 years of age on January 1 , 2016. If you have any questions or concerns regard-
ing your tax receipts, please feel free to contact Susan at [email protected] or call the
school office at 403-556-4038. Thank you.
The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has recently audited three school societies and has
ruled that they can no longer issue tax receipts for society fees. Furthermore, these Socie-
ties have been ordered to pay significant financial penalties for contravening the Income
Tax Act.
OKCS Society has not been audited nor have we been penalized. However, we have
been advised by the Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta (AISCA),
and their lawyers, not to issue receipts for Tuition Fees.
As a result, the Olds Koinonia Christian School Society will not be able to issue tax receipts
for the Christian Program Fees. We will, of course, continue to issue tax receipts for dona-
tions.
We recognize that this could be hardship for some, who plan on a tax refund each year. However, because of the possibilities of penalties up to $75,000 for each year that receipts
were issued, we feel it is prudent to wait until the legal issues are clarified.

With basketball season at the halfway point already here is a look at some recent highlights:
1) Sr. Boys and Girls are having their best seasons together since 1996 when our Sr. boys won Provincials and our Sr. Girls took home Provincial silver that year. Currently our Sr. Girls sit 1st in the CESAA league and more importantly are ranked #2 in the Province for 1A school rankings. The boys sit 2nd in the CESAA league and are ranked #4 in the Province for 1A school rankings (the highest Provincial ranking to-gether since 1996).
***A little exciting history..Mrs. Reed was the head coach of that previous mentioned 1996 Sr. Girls Provincials silver team and is currently an assistant coach with our #2 ranked Sr. Girls team***
2) Congratulations to the following teams:
• middle school girls finished 2nd at the Deer Meadow tournament • our middle school boys for finishing 2nd at the CESD tournament • our Jr. A Boys for winning both the CESD and Holy Cross tournaments • our Sr. Girls for winning the Daysland tournament • our Sr. boys for winning the Bearspaw tournament.
3) Up next for basketball will be CESAA league play-offs. There are more tournaments on the cal-endar for every team, Zones for our 4 Jr. A and Sr. teams. As well, OKCS looks forward to hosting upcoming 1A Sr. girls basketball Zones on Mar. 10/11, 2017.

It is highly gratifying in our role of Trustee to have many opportunities to visit our schools and see that our division’s values are at the core of every interaction with stu-dents. In Chinook’s Edge, we worked together to build our mission and vision state-ments on core values that inform our work on behalf of the students we serve. They guide our relationships at every level of our school division, and impact the potential of
each student as an individual. Our Mission and Vision statements are present in every classroom in our division, as a reminder to our students of the steadfast values that guide all of our efforts in Chi-nook’s Edge. Our teachers and school staff recognize the uniqueness of every child in our care and encourage each one to achieve success. As Trustees, we are extremely
proud of these efforts and priorities in our Chinook’s Edge learning community.
