TODAY

Lady Liberty – Our Lady of Refuge

As a country we celebrate our independence as a nation. One of the most prominent symbols of our freedom of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness is the image of a woman who stands tall in a harbor holding a torch to light the way to these freedoms. She stands as a symbol of a freedom won at a great price. We know this woman; she is the Statue of Liberty.

The other event that we celebrate this weekend is unique to us as one of the 21 California missions founded by the Franciscan friars.

This woman, too, is a symbol of our freedom won at a great cost – in fact the greatest of all costs. We know this woman as the Mary, the Mother of God. She, too, holds a light, yet this is the Light of the World – Jesus Christ. She bears the title, “Our Lady of Refuge,” the Patroness of the Missions in California and Mexico. It was the Francis-can missionary, Francisco Diego Garcia, the first bishop of Baja Cali-fornia, who named Our Lady of Refuge as our patroness. May Our La-dy of Refuge give us the freedom to follow her Son as His sons and daughters.

Second Collection This weekend, July 2 & 3, the second collection will be for the Religious Education Program. Please give generously for the spiritual enrichment of our children.
