To Members & Guests;

Independence Day A.K.A. “4th of

With the month of July upon us we cel-

ebrate our nation’s Independence Day.

It is a time for picnics, BBQ’s, a time to

eat lots of hamburgers, hot dogs, chips

and dips, watermelon, potato salad,

corn on the cob, and many great

desserts. Just think, we could have been

born any where but we were born here

in America. A land of opportunities, a

land of grace and of freedom.

So as you enjoy your vacations or just

relaxing around the house or around

town, be grateful for the many blessings

we have. Food in our kitchens, a roof

over our heads, a car to get around in,

just to name a few. Most of all we

should be grateful for the loved ones we

have and for the greatest love of all, the

love of our lord Jesus Christ.

A special thank you for all of you who

came out for Flag Day on June 14th.

We had 55 people at the event and our

local Boy Scout troop retired flags for

us. In addition the Emblem club did a

flag folding ceremony and provided hot

dogs, chips, beans and soda. The after-

noon was a great blessing and again

thank you for making the event special.

Chairman and ER Tom Newell hold-

the work done with all our local high

schools on Scholarships and also our

job well done by all. In 2017 the

Sonora Elks Lodge (with the aid of

awarded $33,000.00 in scholarships.

This year our Lodge awarded

$34,300.00 to 37 scholars from

bequests given to our Lodge, and

they are: Millar Endowment Fund,

Ernest Olivieri Fund managed by

Sonora Area Foundation, and

Guidici Family Fund & Pugh Family

Fund managed by Edward Jones.

These bequests provided $16,000.00

for our local Lodge to award this

year.

JUNE “ELK” MEALS

Due to a lack of volunteer cooks and

lack of attendance at the last few

“Elk Meals”, there will be NO meal

this month on last Friday of the

month. In May we only had 49 on

Tuesday and 34 on Friday. The

meals themselves made a little

money but when expenses of open-

ing the Lodge and using the kitchen

are tallied up, the Lodge ends up los-

ing money. The supply of cooks has

dwindled along with attendance for a

variety of reasons. In conversation

with some Members of the House

Committee, we decided to just spon-

sor one meal a month, probably on

the 1st Tuesday and maybe with a

regular cook with options for others

as they become available and will-

ing. There would still be the option

of the Elks sponsoring “special or

big” nights such as Steak & Shrimp,

Cook your own Steak, Entertainment

nights with a special meal, but these

would have to be undertaken by a

group or individual volunteers.

If you have any suggestions or ideas

you can contact me and we’ll see

what can be done. Meanwhile, I’ll

try to plan something for the 1st

week in July.
