Our Broader Horizons Program for year 9 students was incredibly successful last year and we look forward to an
equally engaging program this year. Students have been provided with information about the program and will be
required to apply in writing for an experience in one of Health, Agriculture and Local Government. Applications are
due to Sharee Evans by Friday 12th June. Interviews will be conducted on Monday 15th June.
I had the privilege of attending the Country Education Project conference last week. As I have been saying for over
18 months now it is clear that Learning and Teaching is the focus of not just the school but of the whole school com-
munity. Something that parents may wish to consider is not simply asking their children what they have learnt at
school, parents may wish to tell their children what they have learnt at work. We are all lifelong learners…
Financial Assistance Information for Parents
Camps, Sports & Excursions Fund (CSEF)
Every Victorian child should have access to the world of learning opportunities that exist beyond the classroom. The
Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund will ensure that no student will miss out on the opportunity to join their class-
mates for important, educational and fun activities.
School camps provide children with inspiring experiences in the great outdoors; excursions encourage a deeper
understanding of how the world works and sports teach teamwork, discipline and leadership. All are part of a
healthy curriculum.
CSEF will be provided by the Victorian Government to assist eligible families to cover the costs of school trips,
camps and sporting activities.
If you hold a valid means-tested concession card or are a temporary foster parent, you may be eligible for CSEF. The
allowance will be paid to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, or sporting activities for
the benefit of your child.
The annual CSEF amount per student will be:
$125 for primary school students
$225 for secondary school students.
How to Apply
Contact the school office to obtain a CSEF application form or download from www.education.vic.gov.au/csef
Closing Date
You should lodge a CSEF application form at the school by 26 June 2015.
For more information about the CSEF visit www.education.vic.gov.au/csef

YEAR 10 NEWS
EXAMS – Next week is Exam week! Students will have been spending the past week of some classes
busily revising for their exam; however they are also expected to undertake exam revision in their
own time.
o Students are only expected to be at school for their exams. They may go home in between
exams or remain at school to study.
o Students need to arrive 15 minutes before the start of the exam.
o School Uniform MUST be worn.
o Year 10 Exams are treated like VCE Exams – therefore NO talking and NO mobile phones.
POWER HOUR – It has been great to see some Year 10 students at the Power Hour study session in
the library on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights. They are a great opportunity for students to
complete homework and class work with the support and assistance of teachers and community
members.
CAMP – Only a few weeks to go until our Year 9s and 10s depart on their Urban Camp. A reminder
that medical forms and payment are due to the front office by Tuesday 16th June. The itinerary will be
sent home with students before the camp.
Students who are not attending camp are still expected to be at school. Classes will still be run.
SCHOOL VALUES – Students are reminded of our three school values – RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and
RESILIENCE.
Unfortunately there have been far too many instances over the past week where these values have
not been adhered to.
Respect - I do not feel that it is too much to ask students to be respectful towards their peers,
teachers and school belongings. We may not always get along with the people we are expected to
work alongside; however this is no excuse for being disrespectful.
Responsibility – Students are responsible for their own learning. As educators we are there to teach
our students and provide them will all the support and assistance needed. However, you can lead a
horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Students need to be willing to learn and improve, in order
for teaching to be effective.
Resilience – Sometimes in life we are faced with obstacles, and it is how we face those obstacles that
determine the outcome. We do not expect our students to be brilliant in every subject, but all we ask
is they try their best. Being resilient is about being able to bounce back from setbacks. They got 28%
for a Maths test? That should be even more motivation to try harder and improve! I am sure it is just
like a game of football, netball or hockey – they may be a few goals behind at half time, but I’m sure
they don’t just give up, they bounce back and try even harder.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

DANCERS NEEDED!!!
Rehearsals for the Victorian State Schools Spectacular are underway; however we are in desperate need of a few
more students to participate. Students will receive a DVD with all the dance routines on it, so they are able to prac-
tise when ever and where ever they want! We also have a couple more mass rehearsal days with our choreographers
where students will be able to practise the dance routines as part of the group, as well as during lunch times at
school.
Students do not need to be involved in dancing outside of school, but need to be willing to put in some extra effort
outside of school in order to learn the routines.
If interested, or if you have any questions, please contact Miss Hadzig in 5495 1811 or

READERS’ CLUB
We know that reading is beneficial to your education, and a group of St. Arnaud Secondary College students
and staff are embarking on a challenge that will not only be fun, but may also have added benefits.
So what are the benefits of reading as a teen? Reading books, rather than being limited to assignments, face-
book, tweets etc., can lead to an expanded vocabulary and demonstrate the way in which different writers con-
struct their pieces which can help lead to improved writing skills. This is particularly the case when teenagers
read more serious literary works. The more they read, the more information they gain.
Another benefit is an increased ability to decipher what the essence is and what is actually required of ques-
tions in a test situation.
As well as the enjoyable nature of reading, teens who read may have a more balanced view of the world, and
that may lead to them developing greater resilience through seeing solutions to their own problems.
Parents can play an important role in encouraging their children to maintain an interest in reading, by show-
ing an interest in what they are reading and endeavouring to link it to other activities. If a teenager is enjoy-
ing reading stories about a particular topic, try to take him or her to see an associated exhibition or event. If
they like a book that has been turned into a movie, try to ensure that he or she sees the movie.
School Librarian Sharee Evans obviously loves reading, and with her infectious passion for books has estab-
lished the Reader's Club, where participants (both students and staff) are required to read six Australian nov-
els, and attend gatherings to discuss the books with other club members. These titles have been short-listed
by the CBCA (Children's Book Council of Australia) and are in the running for Book of the Year.
Older readers’ titles are Adventures of Cinnamon Girl by Melissa Keil; Are You Seeing Me? by Darren Groth ;
The Protected by Claire Zorn; Nona and Me by Clare Atkins; The Minnow by Diana Sweeney, and Intruder by
Christine Bongers.
Younger readers’ titles include Figgy in the World by Jasmin Janu ; Withering by Bea by Stella Montgomery;
Two Wolves by Tristian Brancks; The Simple Things by Bill Condon; Bleakboy and Hunter Stand Out in the
Rain by Steven Herrick, and Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey.
Sharee says that there are already eager readers signed up, and what better way to spend lunchtime on a cold
winters day!

LODDON MALLEE REGION CROSS-COUNTRY
On Tuesday 2nd June, 40 students represented St. Arnaud Secondary College at the Loddon Mallee Region Cross
Country Championships at Lord Nelson Park, St.Arnaud. The day was calm with no wind, perfect for cross-
country running. There were over 1300 runners that competed in 16 events throughout the day. All students
from St.Arnaud Secondary College ran very well and should be proud of their efforts and the knowledge that
they represented the college at region level. The following students have progressed to the State Finals in the
first week of Term 3: Tiffany Bussem-Jorgensen (14 years girls) and Samuel Rice (15 years boys). We also had the
13 years boys’ team place second, the 15 years boys’ team place third and the 16 years girls’ team place third.
Thanks go to Parents Club and their helpers for working at the canteen and to the staff who had jobs throughout
the day.
